@LinasItsMe the length doesn't really determine the thickness. I'd say start with at least 4 inches though. The thickness is determined on how big each section dreaded is. Maybe like a 1x1 inch square of hair in each section for 1 cm thick.
@NedTheDread Hey, i was planning on making dreads, like 1cm thick, how much length does a 1cm thick dread take of the hair? An answer would be VERY helpful, Thanks! ; )
@rastamandan dude their only 3 months old.... in his other videos they look pretty damn good... i thought you rasta guys were all about some one love type shit, ease up man damn....
THis is an awesome video, thanks for the tip. I am dreading my husbands hair with no product so this will really help the ends, because I don't like the wispies hanging out either.
@theysay45 Its pretty hard to do i think, i suggest backcombing to start them, thats what i did, and they looked good right away and it was not to hard to do
Yeah man i'm glad you stuck wit them this just goes to show as long as you have stick with dreads they end up looking pretty awesome. (not to say your dreads in this video look horrible) but it is pretty awesome that they go from this to just about the best dreads i have ever seen.
If you do it this way, will the tips stay blunted because I do them a different way with a 1mm crochet hook and they fall out whenever I wash them. My dreads are at three-four months.
Dude, you and MattsWhatsUp have the nicest dreads I've ever seen. I want some so freakin bad, but my school is so uptight about hair. So I've been trying to figure out a way to grow it out and dread it. Anyways, nice dreads:D
@NedTheDread Yeah, my school doesn't allow hair below the eyebrows, bottom of the earlobe, or touching the collar of a COLLARED shirt. I've been battling them for years. Apparently, long hair makes you "raggedy and unable to learn". That's what they told me. A friend and I are just trying to keep working the system until they break.
@NedTheDread At my school you couldn't have brightly colored hair (purple orange, green, etc.) so I know what he means. Most schools are so lame about dress codes and all that shit.
@NedTheDread for me its my work, its ok to have long hair, but it cant be in your eyes. so i have to some how grow my hair out long enough to be out of my eyes without having it be in my eyes whie its growing.
yeah these tips helped. (black male hair) but i dont really have dreads, more so locks. but this helped me fix the ones that were kinda messed up at the bottoms
i saw this one guy who had not wispy ends but pointed, like perfect pointy triangles at the end of his dreads. it was sick, he reminded me of the PREDATOR from that movie.
@NedTheDread i loved those movies, especialy the second one. their making a third one called PREDATORS it comes out like in july sometime, it's gonna be siiiiiiick
oh and my friend did another way to get his tips blunted you take your dread and place your index and middle finger on each side sorta like scissors on the dread right where you feel the dread stop and the whispy soft hair starts and hold the dread tight between your index and middle finger then take your other hand and rub the whispy tip in a counter clockwise motion on the palm of your hand, by doing so the hair gets tangled and the friction knots the whispy tip into a round blunted tip :)
so in my opinion dont use wax if your impatient try sea salt instead its a much tighter natural look to them but my blunt tips still has a bit of a tail but its getting pulled into the dread slowly i personally dont like my whispy tips because my hair is naturally curly so my dreads whispy tips curl into spirals and sorta look like Arby's curly fries lol
the sea salt is a good idea, and i am against wax as well, it's only a temporary solution by any means, my dreads are super tight, other wise i would do it
i too am a natty dread and i backcombed them once when i first did them back in november and my hair was lookin messy with a bunch of fuzzies and the dreads were loose so my friend told me to buy sea salt from the grocery store and mix it with water and let my head soak in a bucket of the water for about 20-30 mins..after letting them air dry they felt tighter so i continued to do this about once every two weaks and it tightened them considerably some of them are even blunting up by themselves
Thankk you sooo much dude!! Aaaahh finally a good blunted tip turtioral thing hwoever you spell that. Sickk lockss off love not gonna lie. But yeah i got whispies, and i've wanted blunted tips, awesome job once again.
Hey dude your dreads look sick. I think I have the same kind of hair as you and i just got my dreads in like a week ago how long until my dreads start to smooth out and get tight? Or at least how long did it take your dreads?
I've got my dreads for about 2 months now and they're starting to lock real good now:D Thanks for this awesome tutorial, i was trying to find one for days xD Should have just tried youtube in the first place:P
CHEERS BRO, just got my dread 2 days ago and ive got the whispy tips since my hair was a bit naturally layered, so ill try this out a few months down the track to get a few of em blunted up like yours.
im growin dreads rite now n im curious if u make ur tips blunted can u get them back to whispy ends later on? cuz i just started dreads a few days ago n the blunted tips makes them look nicer rite now but when there more mature i want the whispy tips on them
maybe? but it'll be hard... it essentially dreads the wispy part into the dread, so, you could probably just yank on em until they came out, but it probably won't be the same.
Is it normal for your dreads to looks all crazy when ya put em in? the centre looks like a dread but the outside looks like normal hair and frizz trying to grow around it
That is exactly what they normally look like when you put them in! They'll be frizzy like that for about a month. They'll also stick up more than usual for about a month. After that it's all gravy!
This is the only time I would advise to use wax, but very very small amounts of it.
After a month, don't use wax, it'll just slow down the locking process.
Cool man thanks, a few people have recomended using wax to start, but thats it! so i may do that. i only have 1 dread lol(seein what its like) and im going to order a dread kit so ill have em in a week or 2 hopefully. I got a crochet hook yesterday, it tidyed it up alot also...
@josh4223 nah wax fucks your shit up. all it does is make your hair look like its been dreaded for a long time when it hasnt. it keeps dirt and moisture in your hair which will cause mildew and shit to form in your hair. PPL NEVER USE WAX ITS BAD FOR YOUR HAIR!!!! BE PATIENT AND JUST TAKE CARE OF YOUR DREADS AND THEY WILL LOOK BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
That may be true, but what happens when you wash your hair the next time after putting the wax in? Undoubtedly there will still be some wax in your hair, and now it's wet...
wax doesn't get wet. have you ever put water on wax? it just beads up and rolls off. so, if there is wax on your dreads when you wash it, it is super easy to dry and you don't have to use as much wax next time you wax your dreads.
Yes wax repels water, I agree with you on that one, however the wax isn't completely covering all the hair in the dreads, there will be gaps, and the hair is moving around, mashing the water between strands of hair and so on. If the wax surrounds a drop of water it could be there for much longer than it should...
Either way, I don't want to argue, I've seen first hand what wax does to dreads and it isn't pretty... take your chances, my advice is don't use it. not only because of mold.
It won't keep them healthy... it'll keep them dirty...
Wax is sticky, and dirt will stick to them. Also, wax repels water, which will make it hard to wash out, not to mention if the wax traps water in you hair, and there is stuff stuck to the wax, mold can start to grow, and no one likes mold.
@NedTheDread ok..well obviously we have different views on wax lol. how about we agree to disagree? I like wax and use it, you don't. How about we stop arguing before this ends up one of those gay internet fights that kids who have no lives get into. On my part, I extend peace : ) haha
hey bro, lovin the dreads, can you message me back about how you whent about making yours nd what products u may use in them and everything about yours bro? pleas message me back thank man,
yo yo jus wana say the whole blunted tips lol thing worked out great for me im actually mixed wild ass mix by the way indian german and dominican but uh the helped thx!
hey man nice lock, u know the locks with the like undreaded hair on the end? well if i ever got them i would probabli cut the ends, and how did u make ur dreads? they rule plz reply
i did about an inch then pulled the loose hairs apart to push up the knots as tight as they would go, and then repeated until i had a nice tight dread.
Your dreads look almost exactly like mine (without the bluntips) I'm thinkin of gettin them done by my hair dresser (the blunt tips) only cuz I have to go back there next month to get everything backcombed and shizle, so yeah might ask her to gimme some blunties!!! thanks for the tips as well I found them really easy to follow!
it's sooooo much easier and faster to just burn off the tips and hold yer dread so that you can control the flame. All you have to deal with is the smell .. which goes away next shower.
thanks for the idea. but i did em diffrently i pulled the tip inside the dread not weaving it cuz they came out when i didem like yours just a tip for any one doing this it looks great way better than usual
after a while of strugglin to keep my loose hairs under controll ive found that after you crochet the hair into the dread a few times and then with the extra hair that sticks out of the side hold em in your hand like you would a pencil and then rub it in cirlces against your palm until the hairs are in a tight ball then you push that ball in to the dread and palm roll it a bit it doesnt work 100% of the time but it helps em stay in longer for a better chance to knot into the dread perminently
I'm not sure, a bunch of mine came out, and I just re did them until they stayed. I also have three hooks now, from i think 3mm to .5mm? I find the smallest hook you can use for the amount of hair you need to pull through works the best, and only go up a tiny amount each time you pull the hair through. in the last 3 months only 1 of them has come out...
I've seen people just take the end of their dread in one hand, stick it into the palm of the other hand and roll it around in a circle. It seems to work.
I'm not sure where I got it, but it's actually just a bunch of hair elastics, "stacked," if you will, one on top of another. Red, orange, yellow, orange, red.
i cut(ed) off the loose hairs at the end of my dreads. if u backcomb the hair tight, it wont get loose after u cut it. But ye, i too have some blunted tips on the front. about 10 from 50 dreads.
I haven't found a better way to do em... to go from loose end to blunted tip in 5 - 15 minutes is pretty sweet, and the best part is, once they're locked there, you don't have to worry about em again!
thanks for the tips man. ive been meaning to find out how to use a crochet hook for my head roots cause they are all over. I also dig the blunted tips as well. mine are still young about 3 weeks old so ill probably do that once they get tighter like in 3 or 4 months. thanks alot. =]
Ya it works wonders on the loose hairs by the roots as well and it won't be as hard either!! Like you said, I'd wait just a bit longer because it is time consuming and you might have to come back to fix em up again later. In any case, thank you and good luck!
Just something I forgot to mention in the video, I've also done this maybe a week after getting dreads as well, but most of them fell out. Partially because I didn't get the technique down-pat and partially because I was using too big of a hook. I did it again to the ones that fell out with a smaller one maybe the 2nd week, and most of those fell out too, leading me to believe the dreads have to be semi-mature... The ones I've done about a month ago (3rd month) have all stayed intact and locked.
Thanks dude, I did A LOT of searching for how to get them like that after trying the shitty dread head method. I finally found someone using the crochet hook to put loose hairs in and was like...hey that'll be extremely useful to get the round blunt tips I've always wanted!
Sweet dreads man can't wait tell I get my hair to my chain so am just watching a alot of vids so I know what to do:) love the vid

@LinasItsMe the length doesn't really determine the thickness. I'd say start with at least 4 inches though. The thickness is determined on how big each section dreaded is. Maybe like a 1x1 inch square of hair in each section for 1 cm thick.

I was also considering the "burning in" method.
Anyone heard anything good/bad about that?
Besides the smell, I can live with that! =]
BalanceIsForLosers 2 years ago
ha i was gonna say the smell but then you said it
voodoochile9547 2 years ago
Forget about that please! Dont hurt your hair! Dreads must be treated with care and love, but never with pain!

What size sections do you have?
Kingofdiam0nds 2 years ago
ranging from around 1.75 inches(mostly on the back bottom row) to around 1 inch. I'd say just over an inch on average.

psycomikey8889399 2 years ago
how did you get your dreads? the natural way or backcombing or.. something else ..?
jadetheseahorse 2 years ago
back combing
i did about an inch then pulled the loose hairs apart to push up the knots as tight as they would go, and then repeated until i had a nice tight dread.
NedTheDread 2 years ago
Your dreads look almost exactly like mine (without the bluntips) I'm thinkin of gettin them done by my hair dresser (the blunt tips) only cuz I have to go back there next month to get everything backcombed and shizle, so yeah might ask her to gimme some blunties!!! thanks for the tips as well I found them really easy to follow!
ned2one 2 years ago
my dreads are very natruell and dreaded there self at bottem
jamaicanboy54 2 years ago
it's sooooo much easier and faster to just burn off the tips and hold yer dread so that you can control the flame. All you have to deal with is the smell .. which goes away next shower.

after a while of strugglin to keep my loose hairs under controll ive found that after you crochet the hair into the dread a few times and then with the extra hair that sticks out of the side hold em in your hand like you would a pencil and then rub it in cirlces against your palm until the hairs are in a tight ball then you push that ball in to the dread and palm roll it a bit it doesnt work 100% of the time but it helps em stay in longer for a better chance to knot into the dread perminently
SonicBlastMan 3 years ago
yo dawg u know how to get rid of the loops in dreads with a crochet???

BibelibimzD 3 years ago
mine all seem to come loose after a while.. do yours stay in permanently and lock up inside the dread?
tttooommm111222333 3 years ago
refer to the comment right after yours.
no, and yes, some do some come out a bit.
there's always going to be some that don't want to go, you just have to work on em a bit more. just use the smallest hook that still works.
NedTheDread 2 years ago
brahh i did this to mah tips and mah dreads look sick wit the blunted tips. but they keep comin out on some of the dreads.. wat do i do..
knottyrasta13 3 years ago
I'm not sure, a bunch of mine came out, and I just re did them until they stayed. I also have three hooks now, from i think 3mm to .5mm? I find the smallest hook you can use for the amount of hair you need to pull through works the best, and only go up a tiny amount each time you pull the hair through. in the last 3 months only 1 of them has come out...

thanks alot mate for this tip
Narlz85 3 years ago
I've seen people just take the end of their dread in one hand, stick it into the palm of the other hand and roll it around in a circle. It seems to work.
parkpatt 3 years ago
Thanks brah cool tip. I like that band on your lock, were did you get it!!
mx117dude 3 years ago
I'm not sure where I got it, but it's actually just a bunch of hair elastics, "stacked," if you will, one on top of another. Red, orange, yellow, orange, red.
NedTheDread 3 years ago
this is cool...ima try this!

i cut(ed) off the loose hairs at the end of my dreads. if u backcomb the hair tight, it wont get loose after u cut it. But ye, i too have some blunted tips on the front. about 10 from 50 dreads.

thatsrightisaidit51 3 years ago
i like this video it seems like the best way to get those blunted tips
XdreadheadXjourneyX 3 years ago
Thanks man!
I haven't found a better way to do em... to go from loose end to blunted tip in 5 - 15 minutes is pretty sweet, and the best part is, once they're locked there, you don't have to worry about em again!
NedTheDread 3 years ago
thanks for the tips man. ive been meaning to find out how to use a crochet hook for my head roots cause they are all over. I also dig the blunted tips as well. mine are still young about 3 weeks old so ill probably do that once they get tighter like in 3 or 4 months. thanks alot. =]
edySQUASH 3 years ago
Ya it works wonders on the loose hairs by the roots as well and it won't be as hard either!! Like you said, I'd wait just a bit longer because it is time consuming and you might have to come back to fix em up again later. In any case, thank you and good luck!
NedTheDread 3 years ago
Very good vid. I'll definately try this when I'm at that stage. Thanks.
solytwd 3 years ago
Just something I forgot to mention in the video, I've also done this maybe a week after getting dreads as well, but most of them fell out. Partially because I didn't get the technique down-pat and partially because I was using too big of a hook. I did it again to the ones that fell out with a smaller one maybe the 2nd week, and most of those fell out too, leading me to believe the dreads have to be semi-mature... The ones I've done about a month ago (3rd month) have all stayed intact and locked.
NedTheDread 3 years ago
best video for the tips of your dreads and has no views yet!
devmenard 3 years ago
Thanks dude, I did A LOT of searching for how to get them like that after trying the shitty dread head method. I finally found someone using the crochet hook to put loose hairs in and was like...hey that'll be extremely useful to get the round blunt tips I've always wanted!
