  • I never knew there was an ASL community on youtube. Very cool, though I do not know ASL :s

  • What would happen if the water got splash onto the hearing aids? That would suck!

  • Haha. I love your open discussion and thoughts of the show- Switched at Birth. Whenever I want to order something to eat, it does build frustration for deaf and hard of hearing community while the waiter or cashier do not take a time for communication. Sometimes, they would assume into something else that you wouldn't want to order. The best thing is to write it down and ask them to read. It's important that everyone should listen and provide the correct order.

  • @8588cee I agree with you on the ordering. In the summer I waitress at a bar and grill. I know sign language due to me slowly going deaf, but I am not as fluent as I would like to be. When I was working a deaf man came in. He sat at the bar and it upset me to see my co-workers were not paying him any attention unlike the other customers. All bartenders communicate with the people at the bar, but since they did not know sign they ignored him. I corrected it, but its wrong how they dont even try.

  • @DARKFITZ00 Thanks for sharing. By 120%, I agreed that hearing community (and others) shouldn't leave the deaf people out. It feels like they're treating us as uncivilized and do not think of us as highly. We ARE people just anybody else. I wish that everybody can learn basic ASL or English Sign Language.

  • @8588cee I know. I have a few deaf friends. I truely believe that the Deaf community is nicer than the hearing. I think everyone should at LEAST learn the alphabet.

  • @DARKFITZ00 I agree. I am trying to bring out the deaf (and hard of hearing) awareness with my youtube vlogs. Hopefully, hearing people will develop better understanding of our community. If I can bring one awareness to a hearing person, I am happy enough to change his or her perspective on deaf community.

  • @8588cee I don't use my youtube account, but I do translate and sign songs on Facebook. I also teach all the hearing people I know things NOT to do to deaf and hard of hearing people; like says we are disabled! I try to teach the differences between the communities.

  • @DARKFITZ00 Okay. That's cool. Thanks for bring up the he deaf awareness!

  • @dndmartin I wouldn't say it was a good CDI model, but it does show that there are some Deaf who do interpret as she did. It's just a movie!

  • Love your break down of the episode. I'll subscribe and hope to see it weekly! One thing that I didn't like was the family meeting. The father turned his back to Daphne while he was talking more than once. And there was lots of talking to the side of Daphne without her turning to look. This was a missed opportunity for the show to use the situation to show how to communicate in a group situation while a Deaf person is present. Overall, I love the message the show is sending to its audience!

  • David, David, David, Don't forget the digital hearing aids are more expensive than past hearing aids. The average cost of digital hearing aids cost about $2,500 to $5,000 for both pairs. :)

  • @rlmdeaf1 yes after my video I checked wow most are $1,200 and up

  • #11...it was a perfect intro to the use of a CDI! I hope we see more of that!

  • @HawaiiCDI Do you call Daphne's role as interpreter a good CDI model?

  • And the scene when Bay surprised Emmett and they were sitting on the rock, Daphne did not sign her statement while Emmett was looking right at her! That was the first time I saw Daphne NOT signing in front of Emmett! That really bothered me! And Daphne needs to show that she is not always "catching" everything. In the earlier shows she stated she couldn't hear at all, except some noises with aids. "Hearing" audience may think lip reading is 100% accurate instead of only 30%...See you next week!

  • I love your observations! I think Daphne should be more assertive with wanting people to sign to her, and Emmett, being Deaf of Deaf, (Strong Deaf culture) should be telling the band guys to tell him what's going on. It did not bother me that Daphne interpreted as it was a teen situation and I have seen teens not use the terp cuz they do not want an adult in their teen talks. They would have signing hearing peers interpret. But "Hearing" audience may not know that that isnt the norm.

  • U americans are very lucky to have that show as canadians dont have that show... hopefully one day soon will show that in Canada!

  • Great analysis! For the #5, I find it very cool that Daphne found Emmett's tent due to the Gallaudet banner :-D For the rest of your observation, I do think same.. Also, I appreciate the other's comments. For the first part of show, it irrates me to see Emmett being a lost dog - following his band buddies around and not being part of the conversations till that written note; the Free Beer. I wish to see Emmett being pissed off in that part (perhaps it is editted out). See you next week

  • @ASLKimber I did not see the Gallaudet Banner...overlooked it. Will need to look again. Yes agree with the 2 guys leaving Emmett out or should Emmett be more involved by asking what's happening?

  • David Martin - Good critiques! #2 - Daphne and Emmet are way too accepting of what is going on. Earlier in the show- John - calls a family meeting and no one is interpreting for Daphne. Yet miraculously she accepts this? She's stressed out and has strong opinions about Antonio - so this really is out of sync.

  • @DeafJennyWitty right on! Thank you for leaving comment.

  • You made a great critique and cultural synopsis. Enjoyed those same observations. One thing that bothers me most in this series is that Bay will sign to Emmet, but she won't always sign to Daphne. Even though Daphne appears to use her residual hearing more, Bay should still be in the habit of using her new signs with both of them, not just one. I also love the Daphne's real mom really gets that signing to her deaf daughter is the right thing to do.

  • @LZupp LaRonda!!! Obviously Bay does not like Daphne and I dont like Bay! I rather Emmett with Daphne ha ha

  • For your #2 with your point of view I can understand your view but I have little different view in a way it can be good to show how often Deaf people have been left out, to show hearing people that Deaf people experience left out to hope Hearing people notice and try to not to leave Deaf people out what do you think?

  • @ASLHusky1 But we do not want people to think it is ok to leave Deaf people out. it is not!!
