  • the problem with the canadian brigades was that only labour people, trade unionists and workers were sent...the intellectuals were weeded out...the americans, one the other hand, sent some writers, artists and intellectuals and got several important writers and books out of this war...canada remained intellectually poorer because of missed opportunity

  • Probably not quite like North Korea. Perhaps more like Poland or East Germany after WWII. It wasn't good no matter who won - it could have been different if the western democracies had offered support but they didn't and the Republican leadership found themselves indebted to Stalin and thus increasingly powerless.

    Indeed. For many of the Internationals it was simply a battle for Democracy. As well as Communists the Mac-Pap Battalion counted among its ranks members of the CCF (NDP) and Liberal parties and even Conservatives. Almost everyone seen Spain for what it really was - the true beginning of the Second World War.
