The reason that Dreamtheatre chose Mangini above Derek Roddy and Marco Minneman is because they all already knew Mangini personally. They even said this in the drummers tryouts. It was really kind of unfair because, as much as I like Aquilas Priester and Derek Roddy, Marco really played better than all of them in the actual tryouts. Dream Theatre fans should be extremely upset about this, but never the less we have Mike Portnoy's side project Addrenaline Mob!

The guy will often just smack every drum on the set for 3 minutes straight and play unnervingly offtime segments in his solos. the reason DT picked mangini over marco has NOTHING TO DO WITH PLAYING DRUMS. it had to do with the fact that one guy really wanted to be in the band and the other guy didnt care nearly as much and didnt want to fully commit. both guys were far beyond the call of duty in terms of playing alone.

Mike Mangini may have ridiculous speed, but... simply put, my reactions to Mike Mangini's solos are more "ok, that's just fucking stupid, no one needs to do that..." whereas my reactions to Marco's solos are more like impressed laughter and I think that counts for something.

Not to sound like a defensive fanboy or anything, DT made a good choice. I'm just waiting to hear Marco take part in the writing process of something high-profile and DT could really use a fresh perspective. Hope it works!

I think DT went with Mangini for his personality. There's nothing wrong with Minnemann's personality, but I think among the members of DT (perhaps excluding Myung) Mangini would fit better. It's a shame though, I think Marco's an incredible musician and would've loved him in the band. I'm sure DT made the right decision though.

@Joziaac Well, from a purely musical standpoint, Marco was the best fit. All of the other drummers were a BIT too metal oriented. Marco has an edge the rest don't, which is an extreme creativity. This video is a great example. But Dream Theater isn't looking for creativity as much as "Portnoy Part 2". This guy would have given them a TOTALLY different sound, and since they already have material ready, they don't want to scrap it to benefit from Marco's insanely clever mind.
