MTM playing Laura was sexy on the Dick Van Kyke Show but not on the MTM show unless she was dressing up to go out on a date or with a man. She looked so tall on the MTM show as well. Dick(Rob) was taller and more masculine that Mary(Laura), and there was incredibly chemistry between them. I would say you're right; I always saw both Rob and Laura as eye candy. Carl Reiner created the show for himself, and decided Dick Van Dyke would be better, while Reiner occassionally appeared as Alan Brady.

I also thought both Rob and Laura very much in the JFK and Jackie mold.

Mary Tyler Moore had an earlier show called Sam Diamond (a private eye), and her character was simply called Legs, and that's all you saw of her.
