  • Very cool!

Been driving VW diesels for 25+ years.

What kind of MPG do you get with the Suzuki now?

Does the turbo give it plenty of power for hills?

  • Yup they were transverse mount

  • arent those motors transverse mounted though?

  • what was the donor vehicle for the swap

  • @yotehunter308 The engine came from a Jetta.

  • The Stock 1.3 is good for off Roading or whatever, but as far as highway/freeway speeds go...It was a BAD idea. Underpowered. Struggles to go up steep inclines.

  • @69in89 Have you owned one? They aren't all that great...

  • i love the diesels

  • Samurai have a good long lasting(!)1litre engine, but this VW/Audi dieselengine is more economic to drive.. ,.

  • @fiat850super The stock Suzuki 1.3 and "good long lasting" aren't terms typically found together. With the diesel it still gets about 22mpg with the large tires and a heavy foot.

  • thats awesome....i'd love to do that swap... any idea on weight dif. from stock sammy motor??

  • @jasonstalker That's the major advantage to the VW engine. You're not picking up much more weight over the factory Suzuki engine.

  • neat idea. buddy of mine has one with a blown motor.

  • How did the Gearbox match? We have lots of Engines avaliable @ Germany and if an 1.6 fits in, an 1,9TDI fits! (Passat/Jetta 110HP)

  • @Schucki86 It's not a bolt on, but it's close. One engine bolt hole lines up, two others just need to be redrilled. The other is made up by the adapter plate.

  • you're right I'm here too, that' why I keep my old cars my diesel cars are 2 MB 300 sd,1VW pickup td ,gmc 6.5, volvo 760 td, the volvo engine I want to put into a ratrod pickup with a 5 speed (maybe)

  • samuray and vitaras in europe come with a peugeot 1.9 td

  • There's a lot of euro vehicles I'd like to have. But being in the states, you end up having to make them instead.

  • Cool idea.

Now that VW owns a share in Suzuki, who knows: maybe we'll see something similar to this go into production someday.

  • Nahh, the whiners killed the samurai here in the states from it's handling. Plus I doubt you'd see a spring over, dual tranfer cased, diesel SUV. LOL I wouldn't mind having a veedub TDI though...

  • Yeah, but it's also been a long time since the SJ was discontinued. Maybe they'd be willing to give it another shot, especially since VW, a company famous for reviving it's classics, would be involved.

The critics hated the VW/Porsche 914, but that model's on it's way back. And there's the New Beetle, of course, though I'll be the first to admit that it has nothing in common mechanically with the original, and that the original was insanely popular.

  • what web site can I go to to get the parts and what all parts will I absolutley need? and nice job on the motor, is that a 1.6 or 1.9TD?

  • ive got a 87 samurai and im about to do this to is, what year VW did you get this out of and will my stock samurai transmission bolt up to the VW engine and how good will it hold up to the diesel? also anything specific I need to watch for or things to do when I put the diesel in? Thanks!

  • The block is an 83, the head is an 85. The samuari transmission won't "bolt up". You'll need an adapter plate and custom flywheel. acme adapters have them. If it's only a street vehicle, I'd skip power steering on it. It makes for a more difficult fit. I'd only go with a 1.6TD or 1.9TD.

  • Are you using VW tranny or did you adapted to the original Samurai tranny?

  • You'd have to use a samurai, sidekick, or adapted Toyota transmission since the VW transmissions are for front wheel drives. I started with a samurai transmission. But now I'm running a Geo Tracker transmission and a hacked transfer case coupled to the stock samurai transfercase. Look at my other videos for it. Basically it give me a double low range.

  • I would love to do this. However my dad was a diesel rabbit/dasher fanatic and he was constantly changing injectors and head gaskets. Thoughts anyone?

  • I've not changed injectors yet. Head gasket hasn't given any trouble either, even with 20psi of boost now. I installed a new gasket, sprayed with copper coating sealer, torqued the bolts down to the ft-lb spec (sorry don't know off the top of my head), then did half of the degree turn. Ran the engine up to temp and around a little bit, then finished the final turn. Haven't had any problems in 10K+ miles. Oh and EGT's have been up to 1300F before.

  • Sounds Great!

  • Cool samurai.

  • Now, that's very Japanese!

  • Domo Arigatoo

  • Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto!

  • hey is that an electric fuel pump we hear when it first comes on? is this required in the acme instructions? i would love to see a copy of thier install manual before buying the kit. i have my engine 1.6td,but i'm sure there are things i can do ahead of time while i save money to buy the acme kit! any advice or help would be great! o.m.offroad

  • Yes, that's an electric fuel pump. It's not required, but with the failures I've seen in Dodges from the IP's being overworked. I opted to install it. Plus it makes installing fuel filters a breeze. I didn't use a full acme kit, but just there mounts. I used fyrnon8's adapter plate/flywheel. Not much prep work involved in the engine. I didn't like the thoughts of welding on cast iron on one tab. So I opted to use a smaller allens head grade 8 bolt in that location.

  • Hi Patracy,

You've been busy! How long did it take to do the engine transplant? 4WD? How difficult was it to get it all to lineup? You rule!

  • I've been tinkering with it when I can for the past year or so. Never full time or for long periods of time. It's 4wd. Wasn't hard to get it lined up at all.

  • acme kit huh? Cool! & your running your own Bio?

I bet it will get great fuel mileage? Is this a common swap?

  • hi i just bought a 1.6td for mine! how does it do on the street can you run 70mph now? any tips? and where did you get your motor?any help would be great thanks!

  • Haven't driven it yet, still working on it. Tips, buy the acme kit, it's worth it! The shortblock is from a 84 rabbit and the top end from an 85 jetta TD.
