  • Yeah, they are similar, but so are the bands. I bet most Venom fans like King Diamond and Mercyful Fate.

  • LOLOL at 0:21

  • They both rule

  • u must be stupid! thats the most ripped off riff in HEAVY METAL HISTORY! almost every heavy metal band that came out of the 70s or 80s has done that riff in a song!

  • Your dumb, they sound somewhat similar but there two completely different riffs!! Alot of shit is always gonna sound alike like someone elses. King Diamond fucking RULES!!!!

  • Well it's not that similar. Clearly two different riffs. Love both bands/songs

  • That's a classic traditional heavy metal riff ! Venom and Mercyful Fate aren't the only bands which used it... Look an Iron Maiden's 2 minutes to midnight... and many other bands from this musical category ! Nevertheless, I choose Mercyful Fate's music anytime!

  • Iron maiden-2 minutes to miiiidnight,Megadeth -Skin of my teeth,Megadeth-high speed dirt

  • Venom!!!!!

  • Yeah, and Samson, Iron Maiden and a million other bands. Lulz.

  • I hear a lot of Brittney Spears riffs in Justin Biebers music these days.lol

  • Comment removed

  • Venom fucking rulz

  • And THEN Iron Maiden took it! lol

    2! Minutes! To Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidnight!

  • WHAT A FREAKIN DUMBASS!!!!! WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID FOR MAKING THIS,. THAT RIFF IS CLASSIC 80'S METAL!!!! DUHHH! LISTN TO IRON MAIDEN'S 2 MINUTES TIL MIDNIGHT ECT ECT, AND I HOPE U KNOW FATE WAS BEFORE VENOM, SO IF UR SAYING KING COPIED VENOM UR WRONG U FAGGOT

  • same chords, different constrution dumbass

  • I dont hear the similarities

  • Overused riff is overused

  • there are thousands of songs out there with similar riff to that, don't see what is so strange morons

  • They're similar to each other, but there's a big difference

  • yeah it does....

  • the only difference is the first one sounds like shit! Go King

  • Comment removed

  • I'll tell ya the truth...the very first time I heard 'Welcome To Hell,' I had no idea who the band was whatsoever. Until the vocals kicked in, I honestly thought it was some throw-away track that Motley Crue rejected from their "Too Fast For Love" sessions!! LMAO!!!

  • who gives a shit if mercyful fate ripped them off mercyful fate fuckin rapes the shit out of venom

  • @TheM3TaLMeTaLLiCa yeah except vocals hahaha

  • wtf I'm in your wikipedia editing ur articles? :D

  • No, Welcome to Hell is closer to Two minutes to Midnight and Power & Glory from Saxon, maybe slower. Curse of the Pharoahs has lots of variations in the riff so even if u think they are similar it is not a big issue.

  • if there was a black metal tree... Black sabbath, judas priest, and other bands alike would be the roots, the trunk would be Mercyful Fate and Venom, and the tree limbs and branches would be bands like gorgoroth and dimmu borgir... in my opinion.

  • King Diamond wrote, recorded, and released Curse of the Pharaohs on vinyl in 1980 for the BBC sessions. Maybe you should update your video so you dont sound so stupid.

  • @666TOOLFAN666 try listening to budgie "wildfire"

  • similar

  • Simular at first but MF riff has more notes and gets more complex.

  • idea is the same, merciful fate just wanted to make more complex riff.

  • They sound quite similar.

  • say what? they are totally diferent. in tempo and rithm structure... sure some notes are alike but thats all.

  • You realise that this is a common riff?

Judas priest, iron maiden, motörhead etc. use this riff too dumbass

  • ehhhh kinda both songs are fucking wicked sick thought

  • They arent really that close in the beginning IMO, but they got closer together near the end

  • alot of bands use a similar riff to this..can u deliver for armored saint, love child for accept and the list goes on..but it all comes down to the fact that watever variation..it'll always sound good !

  • Comment removed

  • this riff has been used by many bands like iron maiden, raven, accept, riot, and of course mercy ful fate and venom, venoms is similar but not completely

  • So many fucking songs have used similar riffs to that (ex iron maiden-2 minutes to midnight). It doesn't really matter, it sounds good, no one gives a fuck.

  • ehh, yeah, a little. but there are probably a hundred more like it. its an E riff, so what. Cat Scratch Fever kinda sounds like this so would you say they ripped off Nugent?

  • They're only similar because of the rhythym and the fact that the riffs chug along the open E string. Sure, they're similar, but more because they play the same style of music rather than Mercyful Fate copying anybody.

  • This riff has been used in some variation by many metal bands, Iron Maiden, Accept, Armored saint etc..

  • Similar? Perhaps. Identical? Absolutely not.

  • who cares? both are great songs! and both bands are great! so who cares? just lissen to the fucking awsome misic ! :D

  • Mercy was actually Start in the Very very late 70s, which was when they would start rehearsing.

  • watch this: Mercyful Fate - Curse of the Pharaohs (Rare Live Recording from 1981). curse of the pharaohs was created between 1980 and 1981. sorry for my poor english . am a fucking argetine haha. aguante KD y MF mierda lo mejor que puede existir en el planeta. curse of the pharaohs es uno de las primeras canciones de MF y es del 80 u 81 pero no del 83 aunque haya salido en melissa

  • same as flash rocking man by accpet, and cheap tequila by some other band, also souns like 2 minutes to midnight, this is the most used metal riff fo sho!

  • yer kidding right?!!! wowo dude that aren't that many riffs out there ya know???

  • What the fuck.

  • join the music

  • I play guitar.... the riffs have similiar chords, not exact and are played different ....everything sounds like something nowadays.......Rasputin.

  • YOU SUCK

  • it also sounds like 2 minutes to midnight

  • "Curse of the Pharaohs", "Welcome to Hell", "Heading Out to the Highway" and "Two Minutes to Midnight" along with countless other metal riffs are similar because they use an 'A' pedal tone and major/minor thirds. They're easily recognisable because a)the 'A' pedal tone is more distinct than the ever-present 'E' pedal tone,b)for the most part, these particular songs use the riff prominently in the intro of the song,c)the guitars are much less heavily distorted than usual.

  • ...both reminded me on '2 minutes to midnight' by iron maiden....but honestly you can find matches for probably any metal riff if you want and give a scientific evidence by writing the riffs down on a score...

  • Seriously...Do you have ears ?

  • you are IGNORANT

  • iron maiden's 2 mins to midnight n judas priest's headin out to the highway also sounds similar XD tho the latter is sort of improvised. dontcha think so?

  • Well, check out Running Wild by Judas Priest and then Wicker Man by Iron Maiden. They are REALLY similar, not like ones in this vid.

  • also the riff of 2 minutes of midnight :)

  • yes similar but not the same at all. Like saying me and Michale Jackson look the same because we both have arms and legs. OK MJ's arms and legs should be wormfood by now.

  • no, totally different. You must not be a mf fan or else you would know better. fail

  • They are quite nearly identical a really good example here. I thought I was going to hear a bad one. It's comes as no surprise to me the riff and chord progressions by themselves are not copy write protected rather it's a combination of melody lyrics and the whole song that are. Chord progressions like this are widely used because they are fair game and that's as it should be. The trick is to make them sound more original with your own style and tempo differences or perhaps adding accidentals.

  • I hear what you are saying....I was worried it was gona be a whole bunch of songs though.l would have been let down.lol

  • They're similar but not the same. Not only is the tempo different, but the MF riff has extra notes in it than the Venom riff. In any case, both great bands.

  • The Venom album came before. In fact Mercyful Fate might just have wanted to honour Venom...After all they are both famous "satanic"" metal bands !

  • Definitely not. Pretty much all the early black/extreme metal bands hated each other. King Diamond completely disliked Venom and the feeling was mutual.

There's plenty of quotes from interviews and stuff that you can find. KD once stated that Venom's whole career was a publicity stunt and that Venom was completely untalented.

  • @KissThisScreen The venom album came before mercyful fate? You are fuckin retarded dude!!!

  • @goladen I just checked and it looks like Welcome to Hell came in 1981 and Melissa in 1983, so I still maintain, Venom used the riff before Mercyful fate

  • @KissThisScreen Ok sorry for the word's then

  • Yes very similar. Venom - Gm. Mercyful Fate - Am. It is part of the heavy metal style to down pick the root note and...Wait...I am not going to give a music theory lesson here lol.

  • Mercyful riff is better! HEHEHE

  • played in the same key same scale two very different songs

  • they are kinda simular but compar curse of the pharo to 2 minutes to midnight by maiden

  • This riff has been used by many bands throughout metal history.

Satan must have composed it, and gives it to any band he finds worthy.

  • i didn't find them similar

  • mercyful fate beats venom any day'

  • shit, im an idiot, i thought " Identical Riffs" was the name of a song

  • xD that was funny

  • :P ur my hero lmao...thtd b cool tho

  • well, at least neither venom nor king diamond pulled a dave mustaine (saying that because they have near identical riffs, they should have the rights to those songs)

  • there's many bands that have the same riff in A and it's very common in heavy metal bands...

Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept and many other bands have the same riff.

  • ter50 i think is right

    they are incredibly similiar

but there really generic sounding riffs

  • I like both Venom and Mercyful Fate. Sounds the same but both songs are bad ass. I don't care if 10 bands did this riff as long as they do it right!

  • LOL, the MF also sounds like 2 minutes to midnight slowed down a bit... no, 2 minutes to midnight sounds liek the MF one sped up since its not as old

  • There are millions of song with riffs like these.

  • SoFarSoGoodSoWhat

  • hell ya

  • i really dont care these bands are both fucking great and in a way they sound the same thats what told myself when i first heard ironmaiden they have some riffs that sound like venom riffs

  • I've been listening to Mercyful Fate and Venom for 4 years and I didn't notice that

  • Venom was part of the NWOBHM with their debut album and Mercyful Fate was influenced by this musical current! So yeah... they are similar! But I choose Mercyful Fate anyday...

  • and you forgot 2 minutes to midnight!

  • Yeah, it sure sounds like the King "borrowed" an idea from Venom here. I agree with whoever posted this.

  • Sounds like Maiden here too! That happens often in music. Its the same everywhere: in the fashion industry, in cardesign and so on. People find inspiration from other sources and make their own interpretation and copies.

Ex. Koe Satriani and Coldplay have almost the exact same melodies on their songs. Satriani even sued Coldplay. Hmm

  • they're similar, but Welcome To Hell's riff is a lot more straight and is tuned down 1 & 1/2 step, when Curse's riff is more "thechnical"

  • very similar, but there are some slight differences. but hey, music's been around forever, some of it is bound to sound similar.

  • So fucking what both bands are legendary and i guess if you listen cliosely you will hear other players influences coming out i have been told i sound a lot like gary moore .

  • iron maiden has songs starting like that and many other old school metal bands. gosh. Venom and Mercyful Fate are the shit!!!

  • More bludgeon in Venom's, more soul and evil in Fate's.

  • So they both start in A, a half a dozen other bands have rifs that start that way, both good songs though

  • Yeah, similar.

  • the song "wildfire" by budgie has this riff too but i think its from the 60's

  • That just means that Mercyful Fate was influenced by Venom

  • this would be possible 2 Minutes to Midnight

  • there is so many riffs like this I bet

i know for a fact there is a Iron Maiden riff like this.

  • Similar, but FAR from identical.

  • Indeed, this two riffs seem to be similar. Good video!

  • the venom riff is simple and with power chords, the mercyful fate one is a bit more complex and it's a single note riff. but the basic idea is the same...

lots of musicians do that, take a riff and change it a bit to suit them.

good catch, i had never noticed before.

  • Sounds like 2 Minutes to Midnight, which is the best song of the 3 IMO.

  • are you serious? omg... sorry for you

  • how can you think there similar theres nothing similar about them the only thing similar is there in the same key. you really have to be hard of hearing to not be able to see the differences

  • i agree with raisinbredd (who happens to be my older sister). the riffs are similar, but nowhere near identical.

  • not even close.

  • You're really dense if you think they don't sound alike at all.

  • well they are similar. ill give you that.

but the venom riff is much simpler. just listen closely.

and how long has metal been around? since black sabbath? 1969-70? thats 38 years. now with the thousands of metal bands that have come and gone since then, and the millions of riffs that have been written since then, dont you think it could be possible that some of those riffs might sound a little bit alike?

and i never heard this and thought "wow that opening riff sounds like welcome to hell."

  • @KurtInChains A lot of songs sound "similar." "Identical" is a really idiotic adjective in this case, they're similar, at best. A better comparison would be Iron Maiden's "2 Minutes to Midnight" off of Powerslave.

  • 2 minutes 2 midnight similar too

  • how original a guy posting shit that thinks he knows everything wow real trendsetter

  • lolololol fan boy wtf QQ more and plz take cock out of your mouth kkthxbai

  • Yeah but mercyful fates riff is better.

  • alot of bands use simialar riffs..... not a big deal really.

  • In fact, Venom's Welcome To Hell is aslo similar to Iron Maiden's 2 Minutes to Midnight.

  • It's also similar to the main riff from "Looks That Kill" by Motley Crue, only without the bent high notes.

  • what a waste of bandwidth.

  • So you do not agree that they sound similar, or is it something else? Please tell me, I am dying to know.

  • and???????

  • And whats your point with this video, you muppet you. Anything after Venom and Mercyful Fate and all these new black metal bands are nothing but Venom and Mercyful Fate. In black metal, Venom are the gods of hard and Mercyful Fate the melodic. Both areas are owned by the originators and the best and will always be.

  • I agree with what you said only I would say Mercyful Fate are every bit as hard as Venom just with a melodic angle to it. Obviously that is what Venom lacked.

  • Man, there are only 7 musical notes in the universe, and billion of bands... of course someday the sequence of the notes will be repeating, it's normal.

  • That's kind of a standard heavy metal riff...you could probably find dozens of songs from that era with riffs that could be called "identical" to those. It's not that big a deal.

  • MF had more to it, venom jus had the same thing over and over

  • GET A LIFE

  • Are you just mad that a MF riff sounds so much like a Venom riff?

  • Yeah similar but not the same..Mercyful Fate definitely gets the better for musicianship

  • Far from identical.

  • They are two very different bands and two very different sounds but still very similair. Listen to Painkiller by Judas Priest and The Storm on Abigail 2 same riff pretty much.

  • maybe 2 minutes to midnight from iron maiden too.

  • Classic evil riff, that's for sure!

  • i see where you are going, but only the first set of measures are identical. mercyful fate changes the notes after the first set of rifs, venom stays the same and repeat through out . they are close, but very different.

  • Curse of The Pharaohs can be found on various Mercyful Fate bootlegs from 1981, such as: Sabbath Of All Witches, and Walking Back to Hell.

  • Hey man, I'm not saying Mercyful Fate ripped off Venom for this riff. Hell, for all I know Venom could have lifted this from MF. All I'm saying is that they sound almost exactly alike.

P.S. Sabbath of All Witches and Walking Back to Hell are the same bootleg.

  • Ok, just thought that was what you were implying.

Yeah, didn't mean to put, "and". Sabbath of All Witches, Walking Back To Hell, Denmark 81, The Witch - all the same.

  • Yeah, indeed that is true. Which is why I think it's stupid when people try to give Venom most of the credit for the creation of Black Metal music. Mercyful Fate was doing it at the exact same time. And yeah, Venom could have easily ripped that riff off of Mercyful Fate since Mercyful Fate had already been doing Curse Of The Pharaohs since '81 depending on what time of that year Welcome To Hell came out and vice versa. Because Curse was on Mercyful's very 1st demo. Unsure who's riff was 1st.

  • Venon's fame came mainly from the song 'Black Metal', if the song had different lyrics they would not be credited
