I got stationed at Pearl Harbor and they told me to patrol the celebes sea. So i spent 3 months (Game Time) traveling there, only to get fucked up by a convoy before i even get there, sink one ship, and haul ass back to pearl harbor licking my wounds with 1 ship out of 3 months at sea.

I think the troop ships you moved to intercept early on spotted you so far off in part because you turned your broadside to them. Eyeballs, radar (for what few Japanese ships actually have it), and active sonar will detect you from further away, when you present a larger profile.

@jefmajor One thing you might not realize (especially with passenger liners) is that at the time, even moreso for older ones, is they were VERY flammable. We're talking multiple coats of oil paint, plenty of woodwork, the whole nine yards. There's a long history of passenger liners burning right to the waterline.

technically shooting through the fore or aft of a ship is the most deadly way to hit a ship

your shells will go straight through doing more damage than if you just got a side hit, and generally ships have the weakest hull on the fore and aft.

I thought that the distance marker was the total distance traveled, so <4000 from Pearl to Target but ~4200 from Pearl to Midway to Target would be the ~1300 Pearl to Midway and then ~2900 from Midway to Target. So hitting midway would then save ~1000 Miles on the fuel.
