@kookie2100i Yes, but since black women are constantly told their ugly by American society more than any other woman, it's great to honor and recognize when black women are being recognized as beautiful in big titles/big forms of media such as the miss America pageant.
Vanessa Williams 1984 first Black Miss America. 1st Runner Up Suzette Charles took over 2 months before Vanessa's reign was over for reasons well known.
I don't really think that there is widespread concern at all that she is black. I had not heard anyone say anything negative about this until watching this.

@esquireyes 1990-1991 Miss Americas were unique because black women won back to back. In 1990, both Miss America (Debbye Turner) and Miss USA (Carol Gist) were black women. I remember seeing Carol Gist being interviewed on Geraldo and she talked about all the racist hate mail she received and death threats. Vanessa Williams said it was horrible as the first black in 1983 especially down South because of death threats against her. They had to heighten security.
