  • Listening to this in memory of my grandmother who was born in the area over 100 years ago now!

  • I never heard this until the other day either. They played it on a strictly 'talkback' radio station here in Perth. I'm writing a similar song at the moment. It's about me and my dad waking up every morning at three o'clock on a Victorian dairy farm and smelling cow shit instead of coffee....

  • LOve it. That's all. From the old Aussie. Thanks for posting mate.

  • god , i am ashamed to say ive never heard this till now, its absolutly wrecked me , bloody teary eyed now

  • from an indigenous worldview, its alway makes me feel good when whitefellas sing/talk about loving the land they grew up on, many just don't 'get it'..

  • I was born in Cootamundra - makes me cry when I hear this song.

  • What beautiful words.

  • 4 people grew old and bitter because they missed it

  • Makes you wish you could go back in time to easier and loving times. beautiful song tear in eye.

  • the last of the true australians. nobody knows the meaning of the word any more.

  • Another fabulous song by John Williamson - a pity most of the wattles on the clip are not Cootamundras.

  • Hope all have a wonderful christmas in July

  • my old man used to play John non stop in his car when we were kids, 20 plus years later I still never tire of hearing Johnny Williamson and it brings back only the best memories

  • I never knew this song had lyrics, I'd only ever heard the Pixie Jenkins instrumental version! This version's even better!

  • My Dad used to call my Mum "Woman" - not in an insulting or derogatory way but as a term of endearment . I'm 60+ now - you have no idea what memories this song stirs for me. Thank you, priesty83 but, most of all, thank you John.

  • I love this song. Not sure how anyone could possibly "dislike" really

I reminds me so much of my childhood and upbringing in NE Victoria.

I loved my time there that I spent with my grandfather. Over the years he taught me so much about the land and country life.

    Well done John Williamson.

  • In the not too distant future when Australia is completely flooded by millions of Indian middle Eastern and Chinese invaders this song will be a curiosity.

  • @TheGrunge619 Please dont spoil it by those type of comments!

  • @AuntPearlsGlorybox

Maybe its the thought of your crusty old pissflaps that make me do silly things.

  • I was a kid...moved to a small town....Mum pulled over on the side of the road to pick some wattle..............Been there ever since :-)

  • Very moving song. Heard it just now played on 4CA (Cairns) as dawn broke over northern Queenland, revealing the scope of the damage caused by Cyclone Yasi. True Aussie spirit revealed here. Best wishes to northern Queensland as the cleanup begins.

  • So 4 people have registered their dislike for this song. Just cannot figure some people

  • The original recording was on MALLEE BOY (1986). It's also on AUSTRALIA CALLING All the Best Vol 2 (Gumleaf/EMI - 1992), but according to JW's site that one has been deleted.

  • it should be SIR John williamson by now after all he has done

  • @Beanzzz1982 Too-Right!!

  • @Beanzzz1982 Don't think John would want a knighthood,he's too much of a republican for that

  • And John Williamson is now inducted into the ARIA hall of fame along with Johnny Young .

  • it was great i loved it even no i just herd it i really like your songs

  • yep have to let go and live on

  • So true - "Heaven's all around us if your 'e looking, but how can you see it if you cry". This is it for me - beautiful!

  • Could you measure the depth of spirit that Johns soul has? Absolutely divine song that should be our national song.

  • @TheGrunge619 well yeah it's one of my favourite songs ( like right up there). and believe me i listen to a broad range of music. but i don't think its national anthem material. it's not about our awesome land. But personally i think that " I call australia home" should be our anthem.

  • This song always makes me cry but it is so beautiful and touching. Thank you John.

  • love the accent!

  • I love this song. Loved the Wattle in the Pilbara.

Don't suppose anyone would put his "Happy Birthday, My Old Friend" on here?

  • Oh so talented.....nothing like wattle blossoms and a talented acoustic singer like John. Thank You.... I can feel that winter sun in July.

  • I love the scent of Cootamundra Wattle. It makes me happy whenever I pass by a shrub.

  • A great man I knew was the quintessential Aussie. Raised on the land, served in WWII, "settled down" at 60 but still drove his F100 ute, & his wife, just about anywhere you can take a car. He spoke about Cootamundra, loved how simple life was out there. They played this at his funeral. I heard him saying every word in it. He'd played it b4, but it took on a new meaning that day. 14 yrs on I got to cootamundra, sat next to a wattle and played this. Cried like a baby.

    God I miss ya pop.

  • @gpennyraven my condollences to you, he sounded like a great aussie bloke

  • John sings the way he talks, with an Aussie accent. This is what brings out the colour in Cootamundra Wattle.

  • a wonderful australian poet, does not get the recognition he deserves

both sung by this guy! BEST AUSSIE EVER!

    TRUE BLUE!!!

  • you"ve obviously never gone through the death of a loved one

  • Lovely. This song has a very special and personal significance for me, I always have to wipe my eyes when I listen to it.

  • I'm a singer and this is one of the songs in my repertoire, but I'm a girl so I changed the word 'woman' to 'mamma' to make it seem more appropriate (hope the John Williamson purists don't mind!) And now it feel like it has personal significance for me and my family too. Beautiful songs, beautiful lyrics.

  • I'm a New Wave,80s,Techno freak, but I totally love John Williamson! Thank you I love Cootamundra Wattle! Do you have the Shed? Oh, and 'Papa Whiskey November' & 'Tropical Fever' love 'em all.

  • What a beautiful song.....:)

  • This song is beautiful - it both brings me to tears and I smile too - it reminds me that we won't see the wonderful world around us if we are sad and resentful. I heard it on 2CH in the car yesterday and blubbed whilst I was driving for 5 minutes after it - happy tears though.

  • Beautiful song...thanks for posting!

  • Beautiful video.

  • Thank you John for your beautiful music. Your music has kept me going. Thank you. love Kath
