The 1948 conventions weren't the first on TV. The 1940 GOP convention was.
But the '48 conventions were the firrst to be telecast on a "widesperad" basis (if you consider "widespread" to be Boston, New Haven, Albany/Schnectady, New York, Philadfelphia, Baltimore, Washignton, and Richmond)
The American people were sick to death of Lyndon Johnson, one of the most evil and terrible presidents we ever had to endure; the wonder is that Humphrey, a good man, came so close to winning! I also believe the people instinctively distrusted Nixon but couldn't bring themselves to vote for Wallace; hence, Nixon won, much to the continued wrecking of our nation.
if you want to speak bad about LBJ for Vietnam, more power to you. but if on the domestic front he was one of the best presidents we ever had. if it weren't for him the depression we're in right now would be way worse
Hubert Humpfrey was ahead of the Southern Conservatives on Civil Rights even in the late 40s. One of the things I respect about him.

Me too, Humphrey would have been one of the best. Humphrey-Muskie was the best ticket to be defeated.
