  • hey, i dont have a firewire port on my computer. If i buy a firewire to usb cable (firewire end into camcorder and usb end into computer). Would this work? If not do you know of any other ways? Thanks

  • 106,000 viewer

  • hey, i have a sony camcorder and since i dont have a laptop to plug in the iLink cable (firewire cable) i have to buy a 4-pin to 6-pin then i can plug it into my computer and it will work? is this write? Thanks

  • I dont have a firewire port on my computer soo can i buy something to convert the videos???? please help.

  • is anybody missin the 6 pin connection on there desktop?

  • Hey! thanks thanks thanks for the video! ONe quesiton: is the same if I have a Mac computer??? Thanks in advance!

  • @lindaking64 I'm a big Mac user and I love Mac! Yes, it's even easier to convert from MiniDV but you still gonna need firewire cable. And you need to make sure that your Mac got the firewire port. You import your movie from MiniDV camera using iMovie.

  • are all 4 pin to 4 pin cables the same? In other words, their not a combination of male to male, male to female, female to female ends, right? I have a Sony DCR-HC90E Handycam and a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop.

  • @ussprinceton2004 - The bottom line is this, you will need "Firewire" cable (4-pin for laptop or 6-pin for desktop) to do the conversion from your MiniDV to your computer that is provided that your computer (whether laptop or desktop) got the firewire port. As far as I know, its always 4-pin or 6-pin both end. No combined 4 and 6 pin. USB will not work either!

  • New laptops do NOT have a Firewire socket, mine does'nt so i have to transfer to DVD first then load the dvd to my laptop & re-encode from that to my laptop!

  • @ghosthunternumberone - You need DVD ripper to convert from DVD video file to computer file.

  • @vidwebwiz I actually dont i use AVS video converter!!

  • I have a stack of tapes mini dv and no camera... is there a cheap read only device to get the information off the tapes onto my computer?

  • @chriswalkeronline - You will a reader for those minidv's and make sure your player is compatible to play those tapes. eBay will be your next option and just find any used minidv cameras.

  • so is the quality better when recorded on tape?

  • @gus361 - you could only get the same output to whatever video quality you got on your tape when you convert it to computer file. But there are some software that you could enhance your video quality.

  • Hey can you help me on something?

I have old Sony DCR-TRV30 and i cannot connect my camera to my computer using USB cable. Plus when i turn to video mode on my camera, blue screen appears and i cannot play back the tape... im so pissed right now

  • @U07110743 - Aahh... the curse of Windows (that's why I use Mac now)...blue screen normally indicates your computer is not fast enough to handle video files. Video files requires large memory and fast processors. You might get lucky occassionally but that "blue screen" will always be there plus there could other system problem in your computer.

  • @vidwebwiz I have a question... My GR-SMX265u uses a s-video connector... How do i use that

  • @vidwebwiz Thanks man i managed to find out what was wrong with it and I could transfer tape to my laptop now. Thanks a lot for this video :) subscribed

  • If you use a USB, that will make the video quality of your video very crappy, USB is best used for cameras with memory cards or chips. Videos in Mini DV format must be transferred through a Firewire cable to keep the good quality of video you shot.

  • So your video was INCREDIBLY HELPFUL!!! But I have a question, I ran to Best Buy to buy myself a firewire 4 pin to 6 pin so that I could download all of my tapes and they said I don't need it...all I need is my USB cable that came with my camera to transfer to my computer. Well I have been trying it all night and no luck. :( Do you have to have a firewire cable?? And do you suggest using a memory card in the future instead of tapes??

  • @mineralrevolution -Im glad that my tutorial video is kinda helpful to you. By the way, what particular brand/model is your camcorder? Yes and those Best Buy folks might be right sometimes. It all depends on your camcorder's model. Are you sure if it has firewire? Because if it has firewire..thats what u need to transfer the video file to your PC. USB's will only transfer your picture files. But today's new camcorder all you need is USB that's what they probably mean.

  • @vidwebwiz My Camera does have a DV port like in your video. Its the JVC Digital Still FUnction 800X Digital Zoom. Its almost 4 years old, but in electronics that means its ancient. So should I get a 4 pin to 6 pin to transfer the video from the tapes and then just start using a memory card after that so I can transfer everything easier? I am thinking that I want to be done with the little mini tapes.

  • @mineralrevolution - That should be a 4-pin coming from your camera. Now it depends on your PC though. Some PC have both 4 and 6 pin ports. You could tell the difference between the 2 ports. 4 pin way smaller than the 6-pin. Its not just in Best Buy that you could buy this "firewire" cable. Wal-mar or Radioshack might even carry them. Just be very careful on the way you coil this cable, they get damaged easily. Once you have your videos converted, switch to memory card.

  • @mineralrevolution - continuation... actually, the minidv on the tutorial is the only cam on tapes I used. There's so many simpler and even cheaper that are using memory cards. Of course, your goal should be to convert all those pictures on tapes transferred to a picture file (ie..mp4,avi,mov,wmv). By the way, I prefer mp4 and mov for converted files. Hope that helps!

  • @vidwebwiz Ok I Have the Usb Adapter But this doesn't work

  • @Lakai808 - USB port in your camera if it also has firewire port won't work to for your video file editing. That's especially true if you're camera is the MiniDV type. USB's only for picture file manipulations. And thanks chunkyboy90 for reinstating about that USB and Firewire difference.

  • @vidwebwiz my camera doesn't have the plug in to computer! HELP!

  • @Pharmit24 - Unfortunately, you need that firewire port (both camera and computer) to convert your video. USB will not work.

  • hi. how would i know if my desktop and sony vaio netbook has firewire port? thank you it really helps btw my camcorder is sony dcr hc26

  • ok,i have more questions, can you help me with please?..i don't get it about diference between firewire and usb...also i already look into my computers desktop and latop and they don't have the firewire port,my camcorder has a pin4 , i understand that i have to buy a cable firewire and also a firewire port.rigth?so any firewire port with one end pin 4 or 6 will be ok and this will be conected to my usb?..sorry to botter you..

  • @DUYEMI - USB is a completely different port from Firewire port. 4pin port (Firewire) is normally found on laptops for its compact feature. Now if you don't have a firewire port for your "desktop" now you're out of luck (sorry). I don't even recommend going thru the pain and stress of installing additional firewire port especially if youre not really computer/hardware expert. I dont even mess with that stuff.

  • nice,you help me alot!!..thanks..

  • @DUYEMI --- Youre welcome. Glad to help.

  • much appreciated. thanks for putting this up...

  • Thanks so much for putting this up. So simple and yet I had no idea how to go about it .... well appreciated.

  • @vidwebwiz > i have a Gateway laptop. I dont seem to find an s400 port in it. Any help?

  • @oratski You really need that firewire port to get that video transferred from your camcorder to your PC.

  • Can you recommend a cheap sony camcorder that I can use ( and where to find it) just to transfer my mini dvs to my lap top? I dont have a cam corder. I have an old Sony Vio laptop w/Windows XP & Movie Maker. Want to transfer some of my old shows. Thanks!

  • @pfcruiser The camcorder you need doesn't have to be Sony. It's probably just the brand of your minidv tapes is Sony? The best place I could recommend for you to get real cheap/affordable for minidv camcorder is eBay. Go to eBay, type "minidv camcorder" and there are some about $75 give or take shipping. Double to make sure that it's still fully functional. Some of them are just listed for parts. Make sure u got firewire port in your PC too.

  • I dont have firewire cable port in my laptop but i have firewire cable. I use Canon XL2. Any suggestion please ?

  • @MohonaTvCanada It looks like that you got a better camera than your computer :). XL2 got both RCA and firewire port right? But since your computer doesn't have the firewire port, I would recommend using VHS To DVD 3.0 Deluxe (about $60) software/hardware to connect your camera to your laptop's USB port. The connection should be in the manual of that software. I hope that helps. goodluck!

  • @vidwebwiz > Thanks for your reply. Can i use USB cable instead of FireWire ? I just found USB cable in eBay but not sure if i can use it on my XL2. Please let me know as it really appreciate. :)

  • @MohonaTvCanada Yes, but you will also need that software/hardware conversion tool (VHS to DVD 3.0) I told you earlier.

  • i used to hav a mini dv camcorder but i dont hav anymore how can i transfer old camcorder's tapes to pc ? do i hav to buy same camcorder or i can transfer them with any mini dv camcorder ?

  • @AhlesunnatUK - Are they VHS tape format? If so, you could just use a VCR to connect to a analog - digital converter device then to your PC. It's a little bit more tedious for analog video tapes.

  • i have a samsung SCL610 and i don't have a dv port but i do have a thing where it says s-video and you also have to insert something?

  • S-video is for video output. You have the Hi-8 format tapes which is also analog. You need to have a device converter that you could get from Best Buy or sometimes RadioShack. You need to connect this between your PC and camcorder. It's a little bit more complicated for the hookup.

  • thank you for taking the time to do this video

  • @domriv183 Youre welcome!

  • This was informative but ridiculously slow paced, def clean it up.

  • I really appreciate your information. Your step-by-step directions have been so easy to follow that it took only a minute to transfer my videos. Also, thanks for the graphics.

  • @Angusego - Good to know that you find it quick and helpful tutorial.

  • Far too slow in explaining the procedure. We have only limited download per month and this is a waste of that precious allowance. tidy up the presentation and re do it. too many word whispers, e.g. "arr, arrr, arr" No problems with your accent, this is the WORLD wide web, not the American wide web.

  • you can save the videos right?

  • @Pogrebniackable - Yes you could.

  • So basically if u have just the dv tape u want transferred to ur computer and not the camera, than ur screwed? I'm assuming!

  • so if you don't have a firewire port your screwed basically?

  • @NicksGoinToHollywood Not necessarily. See my video responce and I can tell you how to get a firewire port on your laptop or desktop.

  • you are asian aren't you?

  • Do any HP laptops have Firwire ports? If so what type ?

  • It seems like my DV connector on my camcoreder is broken. I see a pin in the dv connector that is not in the connector anymore, is their another solution to get it on my laptop? like another device i can put in my tape and connect with a firewire cable?

  • i need to know how to transfer video from the normal video tapes that they used up to about 10 years ago, could you help me with that please. i have a load of weird home movies for example a video of the time i was at my grandads farm and a cow's head got stuck between two trees, those kindof videos get loads of views so if you dont mind helping me? thanks :-)

  • @Friday2Sunday1996 -do u have vhs tapes or other format?Anyway, you could convert those using computer conversion programs and softwares (some computer knowledge required). What I could recommend is getting a Aiptek 1080p camcorder and that's I use too. No program required or computer needed. Cables/adaptors from your VHS(assuming u got vhs) player to Aiptek camera, press playa in VCR then press record in Aiptek...bam!! You got converted videos.

  • im using a 4 pin to 6 pin. but im using an adapter to get it into usb. will it work

  • Nope. USB is completely different from firewire port. It may feel like it seems to fit but not connectively.

  • @vidwebwiz But i heard that if you get a usb driver for the camera. the adapter from fire wire to usb will work. its a 4 pin cable to 6 pin. the adapter is a female 6 pin to usb.

  • I did a little research myself. And this what I found. "Firewire (IEEE 1394) and USB (Universal Serial Bus) are two separate high-speed bus technologies that allow multiple devices to be connected to a computer. The 2 technologies are not integrated, and it is not possible to connect a USB device to a Firewire port either directly. A Firewire to USB adapter cable for transferring digital video (DV) is available from at least one manufacturer, but it can be expensive and difficult to find". ok?

  • @vidwebwiz im 13..i have no idea what that means. does it mean it works? because i bought one. And i want to know if it was a waste of money. I dont have a firewire port on any computer at my house and i have four different computers.

  • ok young wiz...I haven't used any adapters so Im not sure if that would work to what u got since I havent come across such adapter. I know what I said is not much help. Can u try to see if its gonna work, if not, can you return the item? Fair enough?

  • @vidwebwiz alright. since it says i need the usb driver software for the camera then i'll see when i get it

  • i need help my dv camera doesnt have a firewire port so i cant do this and i also tried inputing the video into the tv and burning it straight to a dvd but this also doesnt work because my computer does not read the dvd for some reason i need help. if anyone knows i will be hugly gratful

  • What brand & model of dv camera you got? You see, the firewire port is what synchronize your camera's control to your computer. But tell me the brand and model of your DV camera.

  • my video camera is a JVC GR-DVM1 hope you can help thanks

  • God!! But I dont have the ***&*((*(( Camcorder !!! what software i use to transfer from mini DV to Computer!!

  • You gotta have firewire port to this synchronizing between camera and your PC. If you have a PC, Windows normally comes w/ Movie Maker with it.

  • thanks man. =]

  • can we do this work with " 4 pin - usb "cable ? i dont have " 4 pin-4 pin " cable

  • USB is completely different from firewire cable. If you go to Wal-mart or preferably Radioshack and ask for firewire cable to see what they look like.

What brand and model of camera u got?

  • @vidwebwiz

i have panasonic NV-GS75 Camera. how can i transfer my videos. i used 4pin-4pin cable but my pc didnt see cam??

  • Your camera might be one of those that Windows Movie won't just recognize for whatever reason. Did that model comes w/ MotionDV software w/c might be your way to connect to PC.Another step might be to use the compatibility test if you got Windows 7.

  • i have a acer laptop n it doesnt have a firewire port....what do i dO??

  • how can i recognize if do i have 4 pin or 6 pin input on my pc, when its desktop, is it always 6 pin?

  • desktop is 6pin, laptop is 4pin

  • It appears I do not have the 1394 firewire input on my pc. After calling the support team they tell me my compaq presario does not have it. It is several years old maybe about 8 yrs old desktop. what now.

  • what if the computer won't register the camcorder? I have to correct cable, I have the camcorder turned on and I have window media player.

  • can you do this without a firewire

  • @SmokeMeDry ok

  • No to my knowledge because that is the only option if you are using mini dv camcorders or bluetooth

  • I have this camera, it would be a lot easier if they would just put a usb on every camera, it seems like an obvious solution to everyones questions and complaints. But thats just me.

  • @youtripitrip

USB cannot transfer enough data for real-time video capture. Not too mention how much longer it would take with USB. That is why they all use firewire ports.

  • @youtripitrip Well, first of all, i dont know why, but there are copyright problems with that. And firewire is DESIGNED for video, which would make it 100x better quality and much smoother than usb.

  • what should you use if you are transfering from the camera to an editing program? what cable?

  • same i think

  • firewire or usb

  • thank you! I did this a long time a go, but is good you reply thanks!

  • So I have a NEW sony vgnsr220j computer with Vista!! and a NEW sony HC-52 mini dv tape camcorder the computer streams video excellently, but when I tried to download video the computer blue screens and shuts down any solutions yet to the sony issue?? so now what do I do I want to be able to down load into the new sony, would windows 7 stop the bluescreening and download???? or has sony come with a solution, ????????? Any help answers solutions or anything?

  • Do I need the driver for the video camera to do this?

  • that was very helpful...thank you!

  • youre welcome

  • lol even though i thought that could've been explained in half the time it actually took... nice tutorial and nice powerpoint

  • Hi I do not have DV output from my camcorder, I have A/V output. What kind of wire do I need ? Thanks.

  • can we us a usb?

  • for minidv camcorder w/ firewire port, yes, you can use usb but only for picture transfers.

  • cant we use usb?

  • i have Panasonic nvgs17 minidv camcorder - will i need 4pin to 4pin OR 4pin to 6pin firewall cable?

  • well ur going to need a 4 pin for sure but are u using a laptop and if so what model and if ur using a desktiop its 6 pin for sure

  • Excellent video, thanks for posting it, it was very helpful.

  • you're welcome!

  • Bro thanks. Is it possible to upload pictures on your minidv tapes to desktop too?

  • I never thought of doing that but I think it would be more efficient just getting your pictures loaded in your computer. And then do all the video and pictures editing in your Windows Movie maker.

What are you trying to do if you want to upload the pic to your minidv?

  • Yeah your right. Thanks.

  • hey i don't have a firewire port on my camera!!!! what should i do now?!?!?!?!

  • but a capture card and upload it through your av port on your camera ;).

  • great...i've been looking for this tutorial...thank you very much...i love it, so useful and viewer friendly....

  • That's great; many thanks. I bought JVC's GRD820 camcorder yesterday, then went to their website where they deny all knowledge of miniDV camcorders!

  • awesome how to! In depth detail! 10 out of 10 stars. Please make more tutorials! Your voice is really soothing. Wait? what?

  • does the tapes have to be full to be able to transfer the videos? em really an idiot when it comes to this i just got my new sony handycam DCR-HC54E and i cant seem to figure out how to transfer it to my laptop i tried everything even my usb is new.. give me some tips here please..

  • No. You could transfer the video into your computer whether the minidv tape is full or just a couple of seconds clips. Take Note - You have to use your i.link(firewire) NOT the USB port (as what mentioned in the video tutorial). USB is only for the picture file. So you will need a FIREWIRE cable. Just check your videocam and laptop for the right size whether it's 4 or 6-pin on each end. To be sure, take your laptop and camcorder to Bestbuy and show them what you got.

  • do any Windows laptops have such a port? Or only Macs?

  • It really depends on the PC if firewire port is included. That's before buying a PC to ask the rep what features you will need for your video editing needs.

  • Uh.. yeah, you can also install the PCI card manually.

  • U a Pilipino huh

  • Am a proud Pinoy!

  • be abal to bue it on yur kumpyutur. por pin tu por pin. hehe. j/k

  • My major problem is that MovieMaker doesn't recognize my camcorder. I go to available devices, and it only lists the ATi T200 AvStream as a device, not my camera, so I can't encode. It's my uncle's canon ZR85, and neither of us have the camcorder software, is that why it won't work?

  • Great straightforward vid. Thanks!

  • My camera has a firewire connector, but my PC doesn't. I've checked the back, and there isn't one.

  • your going to have to get one installed. It could be anywhere from $20 to $100 probably. go to best buy and ask about it. they can send a guy out to set you up

  • This guy sounds like he should be in the mafia.

  • is firewire cable the same as usb cable?

  • no it isn't

  • Looking at my camcorder, I dont have a firewire cable connector, but I do have the type of connection that I use on my other electronics which has a usb on the other end. Will this work with windows movie maker?

    ThanksDave

  • Whats the brand/model of your minidv camcorder? no instruction from the manual for the type of cabling u could use to transfer your videos? So what kinds of ports you have on your camcorder?

If you have a MiniDV camcorder, you should have some sort of port with it to do your transfer. As long as Movie Maker could detect your camera, you should be able to do this transfer.

  • Ok...right after i sent you that last email, I did find my firewire port and did download my movie unto my computer but in real time. Cant I fast forward and have it record in ff mode? How do I make it record faster?

    Thanks

  • Ok Dave, so that's good then if you have successfully transferred your video to your computer...in real time. Which brings me to question about transferring your files faster, guess what? That's the big disadvantage of MiniDV, you can't transfer file except in real time mode only. The only difference between VHS and MiniDV is MiniDV's are digital. That's why I never hesitated to switch to HDD camcorders where you could transfer video files in file format.

  • Thankyou for posting this i really needed it.

  • i don't have a dv port it says av...is it the same?

  • The AV port in your pc or computer? AV is an output port to connect to your TV. DV is not the same with AV port.

  • how do i fix the quality of my dvds i transferred it to my computer but then when i made a cd it won't play on my DVD player and quality is really bad

  • CD or VCD is lesser quality and yes, it probably won't play with most DVD's. You really have to set it up for DVD format for improved quality.

  • my pc does not have a 6 pin firewire port, but my apple laptop does. Does the apple come with video software like windows? Can I buy a fireire port to install into my pc?

    Thanks

  • dave,

How about a 4 pin-port on your PC? Because you could also get a 4-pin firewire for both ends. That will work too. For apple, it's actually better in fact I love my mac. When it comes to video manipulation..Mac is awesome. The software you could use to import videos to your Mac is via iMovie. And the latest version is iMovie09 where you just get the iLive09. The video transfer in Mac is even a lot smoother. That's why I rarely use PC when Im doing my video editing.
