  • I was going to say that this is the only American interviewer that doesn't make me cringe.. but he's Canadian.

  • @MultiObligation There aren't many great American interviewers...at least not now days. Not that I'm aware of anyway

  • @MultiObligation There are not that many great American interviewers anymore...at least that I'm not aware of

  • You can tell he hasn't thought his atheism through enough.

  • @ArtificialInfinity that makes no sense; you dont need to 'think it through' to be an atheist. we're not born with holy books in our hands

  • @ArtificialInfinity your comment makes zero sense.

  • Great interview! George is not a cheesy interviewer imo, he is humorous and appears genuinely interested in what Ricky is saying :]

  • George is like a young Canadian Andrew Denton.

  • I'm from the UK and not to dog on America or anything as, a lot of incredible stuff comes out of the US too (as much as people slag them off), but Canada seem to generally strive for more intelligent aims, like the UK.

I say that with a fair amount of ignorance actually haha, having only seen this and QTV and a few other things but a few people like Ryan Reynolds and a magician I'm aware of (I used to do magic) just make me 'feel' that underbelly of self-awareness and honesty in Canada.

  • I swear, if you were to shave the hosts hair off, he would be a younger looking Howie Mandel...

  • @ThatBaldAtheist everyone looks like a younger howie with their twaty head shaved:p

  • They should hold on to this guy he's good, very good

  • I know it's been said plenty but this interviewer is the least annoying interviewer you can find online, this is one of the better "celebrity" interviews I've seen for a while.

  • lol, for some reason i thought he said 'god may be an atheist'. That'd be weird.

  • George... his mom goes to my church. O___o;;

  • A strangely sincere interview from Gervais. I like it . And yes, the interviewer is very good at his job.

  • talking about george

  • omg his name is greek

thank god i thought for a second he was a smart american

  • @no1wudno

a smart canadian, actually ;) (not nearly as rare)

  • @no1wudno IM a smart American. i detest religion and almost done with my bachelors in Cell Bio thank you very much. there are a lot of idiots here, but not as many as you might think.

  • im still trying to pronounce the name stombolopolusouslpolpos

  • @dljc1979 ..he's around Canadians...jst sayin' :p

  • the only famous englishman who can be properly english when around americans..

  • @dljc1979 I was just thinking that myself. Instead of pandering to americanisms he uses words, phrases and references North Americans probably wouldn't get. Which can only be a good thing. Good on him.

  • @toppaz79 | that and he seems to be fully aware of the weird akwardness that sometimes exists betweens americans and british and gets over it easily by not giving a shit..

  • @dljc1979 Yeah and why should he? It's a really strange situation where non americans and even american producers are modifying 'Britishisms' for american audiences. If we can understand 'Parking lot' why can't they grasp 'car park'?! I think it's patronising. oh sorry PATRONIZING.

  • @toppaz79 | er.. yeah.. british really don't care if americans or anyone else modifys britishisms.. going with what works is probably easier than learning about something they don't really need to learn about frankly.. british people don't complain about prejudice towards british people unless they are full-blown communist shills.

  • I love how Gervais doesnt pander to the lowest common denominator like say for example will ferrel or robin willaims does. Gervais doesnt harp on the ethnic jokes to get the easy laughs. He goes after the day to day stuff which is actually harder to get right, apparently by todays standards.

  • "Yeah... yeah... there are too many bitches in the world."

    I love Ricky Gervais.

  • These commercials are getting super annoying....

  • 3:59 - case in point - the kardashians.

talk about useless, crass and getting famous for no good reason whatsoever.

  • I went out to the.....VIP area.....oh yeah...

  • "I don't mix with ordinary people anymore" fucking gold.

  • Great interview, Stroumboulopoulos is the best.

Look at Ricky's face @ 7:45, he's impressed that George has done the research.

  • "There was a study with 10 year olds.. they asked them what they wanted to be and they said "Famous!"

"do you ever pull these kids aside and tell them 'Its NOT all its..."

"Well I always knew it wasnt and I've never respected someone because i recognize their face! Its getting to the point where people have more respect for someone who won a reality TV show than for someone who cured AIDS."

    Beautiful!!!

  • yipster

  • @specialfx34 :

Hear, hear! Here in the States they are always talking over their guests, interrupting them, and trying to score points. Many times the two people are not even in the same room. US media are pathetic.

  • @specialfx34 Now that I've seen the Russel Brand interview I know what you mean.

  • Does Stroumboulopoulos come to London a lot? Whats going on in this video?

  • Stroumboulopoulos??? WTF?? lol

  • YAY another great person who realizes religion is a bunch of bullshit fed to the people for mass control!

  • @utdfortreble - Of course. I've been a big Gervais fan since the start and have heard every XFM show and podcast about 100 times each.

  • Yeah.... there are too many bitches in the world

  • Gervais is so right about fame.

People become famous for doing nothing nowadys, like Paris Hilton

    (her big achievement: daughter)

And then they use their name and bring out a popsong ( wich they didn't write themselfs) lounge a clothing line ( wich they didn't design) ect...etc...etc...

And people run out and buy all this shit. SAD!

  • @specialfx34 Us Canadians know how to treat people! Haha! George is amazing!

  • I miss this old set for the Hour. Better then the newer one

  • good old ricky...

  • I love Ricky's work but he made a huge decision about believing in G-d based on an 8 year old kids feeling that his mother didn't want his brother quizzing him? Very scientific, very rational. No wonder his ideas about religion are nonsense- they are an 8 year old's ideas. Pity he never thought to ask serious religious people about religion. As he states, he much prefers the lazy man's way out.

  • @JaneEva why did you miss the 'o' out of God?

  • @sukyamoma2 I guess he's Jewish, they don't write or say God's name I think.

  • @JaneEva: Do you honestly believe he hasn't thought about it since then? (I'm sure he has.)

  • @richi3mass3 Heh ha. Absolutely. I suppose JaneEva hasn't seen his "Aminals" standup though. S/he's made a decision about Ricky with as little information as possible. lol

  • @richi3mass3 Oo, "Animals", rather. Meh heh. =/

  • @JaneEva "Pity he never thought to ask serious religious people about religion."

Are you actually serious about that line ?

  • GEIA SOU RE PATRIDA!

  • George is an excellent interviewer, one of the best.

  • Karl Pilkington has a head like a f'n orange!!

  • I've said it before and will again. This interviewer is a natual born talent.

  • ricky gervais is a seriously funny guy

  • Stroumboulopoulos?? really? thats obsurd

  • @Coolguyrob2006: Sometimes people in other countries speak different languages and their names are different and everything.

  • @Coolguyrob2006

    its a greek name

  • @Coolguyrob2006

WTF? Get your dick out of your mouth, you dumb hick.

  • @dwainedibbly tee hee

  • I like on the hour interviews because its more like friends catching up rather then some random person asking the same repetitive questions. It's also good to see really humble star actors like Ricky Gervais.

  • @JJFatty422 its because George doesn't really ask question after question. He listens, goes along with what the person he is interviewing is saying. He's very good at knowing what to say to push the person to keep talking. He makes them the important one.

  • I'm impressed. This is probably one of my favorite Ricky interviews. George is a great interviewer. He either does his research really well, or he's a fan - & that's great. I'd prefer him to most late night guys, for sure! & I love his last name.... & that set/backdrop. Where does this air again? Canada? Looks nice.

  • Oh wait, that's London isn't it?! haha! Nevermind that last question :o)

  • lol no it's Toronto.

  • Not just that but he listens to what the person he's interviewing has to say and responds, instead of just firing off a bunch of questions. And the show is long enough to take time out to actually ask stuff. Definitely well done.

  • @megamarsvin

Oops. I messed up and gave you the thumbs down, my bad. I agree actually.

  • @shawnadancing - mmhmm, I really miss this set. They should go back to this format.

  • @vendetta89 ? i thought this was just the set for when they were in england

  • @unholychunk - Yes it is. I apologize. I was thinking of the old set while writing about this one. The two thoughts just got crossed. Either way, I always find CBC has such an amazing visual quality. Definitely my proudest station out here in Canada.

    This does look exceptional though.

  • he should take the piss out of the yanks

    they are so gullible

    nice one GERVAIS

  • what a surname...

  • i love how atheists mention god more than theists.

  • @wildeanbeast so what?

  • Love Ricky & the interviewer. He also has the longest second name in the history of surnames.

  • Really good interviewer.

  • Yeah, George is great...he's always interested in what his guest has to say, and makes it so I care too. He even makes interviews with our politicians interesting.

  • I've always really liked this interviewer. He is one of the few who I remember as being polite, sincerily interested in his guests and intelligent.

  • I like this guy and even more now that i know he's an atheist like me.

  • Yeah, he's a nice genuine guy too. There's no ego or pomposity, he's just honest.

Every Canadian I've come across seems to be very intelligent and... British in sense of humour.

I mean... Not that I'm suggesting there could be a genetic thing there but maybe something we can't pin-point, so many collective things to do with the culture, background, which creates it. I don't know.

But Ryan Reynolds for example. Very British, and class.

  • sorry i mean mcjeff1234

  • AIDS IS a disease. IT doesn't kill you, but it enables things that wouldn't ordinarily kill you to do so because it destroys your immune system. A destroyed system of the body is certainly more than a symptom--and it's progressive, etc. and thus obviously a disease.

  • uku, do your damn homework.

  • A.I.D.S. is not a disease. It is a syndrome or collection of symptoms. No one dies of A.I.D.S. They die of complications associated with the syndrome like Kaposi's sarcoma (a cancer)

  • you're dead inside

  • true unless it aids of the lungs,a doctor told me that down the pub so i know its true.

  • I think aids is just considered a chronic disease. You don't die from it, but you will be sick the rest of your life.

This is just in industrualized countries, since in the third world, they can't afford medication...

  • AIDS doesn't kill you directly. It utterly destroys your immune system so that the slightest cold can kill you.

  • mmm same with bullets; they don't kill you directly but when they enter your body they cause problems that can kill you... ;-)

  • It's the catchphrase from extras - calm down you spastic.

  • First of all, the host is CANADIAN, not American.

  • Actually he's Canadian. So I suppose you're the toolbag poser or any other ridiculously unnecessary criticism of your choosing.

  • From the sounds of it, you haven't been laid in a while have you?

  • From the sounds of it, you haven't been laid in a while have you? Which makes sense if you've watched over 6000 youtube videos in under a month. Wow. I have nothing else to say to you.

  • Third most popular website on the planet. You're basically saying anyone who uses the internet, at all, needs to get a life.

    Durrrrrr good comeback. Durrrrrr!

  • It's not the fact that you posted a comment, it's your sexually-frustrated tension that annoyed me. People like you just hate the world and think you are special. You're not, I assure you.

  • Ricky RULES

  • Gervais is the most naturally funny person I've ever seen.

He's always funny. It's like he's constantly spouting comedy genius at any given moment.

Never a dull moment when listening / watching him. He's either extremely funny or extremely interesting.

  • @magicbibledotcom i come from same part of country almost and everyone is like him in the pubs and at work, its a real piss taking culture...

  • @magicbibledotcom have you ever heard of karl pilkington?

  • A couple of years ago I saw some episodes of the original British "The Office" and the opening song was something I recognized and hadn't heard in decades. Can someone please tell me what it i?

  • it's the piano version of "Handbags & Gladrags" by Stereophonics

  • Thank you so much!

  • rod stewart originally

  • thanks

  • 1:50 britiss presh?

  • "oh what, are we farmers? What do you mean we need the light?"

hahahhaa Ricky Gervais is hilarious, even in just telling an anecdote he's got perfect timing

  • Fat guys FROM READINGGGGGGGGGGG

    yehhh

  • In terms of accent? I'm from Birmingham and we sound nothing like Aussies...

  • Sorry, couldn't understand you -- you sound too much like an Australian or something... :)

  • Lmfao!!!! Theres a huge F**king difference

  • Stroumboulopoulos > fuck!

  • Love Ricky Gervais.

  • It reapeats during the day on the 24/7 hour news network version of CBC, but it usually shows at 11PM at night for new episodes.

  • he used up his 30 kg's on his Tits lol

  • They bleep "mother fucking"? What the fuck is that about?

  • it's censorship

  • Is that what American cable is? Or is it network? In the UK we have a "watershed" cut off point where vulgar language is permitted up to the discression of the director of that channel.

I don't know for sure but I hear swearing of all kinds is banned on US TV. If so, that's sad.

  • I prefer the way Canada & UK deal with vulgar language.

The US networks can get sued by lazy parents who use TV to babysit their kids, so they all have to censor everything.

At least that's what I think is going on.

  • this is in canada

  • it's like canada's bbc during the day

  • Why do you assume this is an American show? The Hour is made in Canada by the CBC, which is a government subsidised television network, similar to BBC.

  • Canadians sound the same as Americans to me.

  • canadians from the east coast, specifically newfoundland sound nothing like canadians from quebec, or ontario. candaians from the west coast sound nothing like people from new york, or texas. people from new york sound nothing like people from boston, or minneapolis. this isn't even taking into account all the ethnic accents in southern california, or the golden horseshoe. the diversity is great in these two countries, and the space is wide enough for varied dialects and accents.

  • true, but we can tell those accents apart cuz we're in north america. english/scottish/irish accents are all diff, and have different regional inflections within each country. most people from north america can't tell the countries accents apart, let alone the specific regions.

  • true, but because we can't guess which country the accent is from, we say they are all from the same place? you couldn't tell the difference between a quebecoise and a southern drawl? the differences in england are slight compared to the differences even in our own countries. for your position to be even remotely persuasive you have to define what a can/american sounds like. and i proved that is impossible.

  • thats bollocks! The difference between someone with a really strong london accent compared to someone with a really strong northern accent is vast. may americans cant understand northeners when they come to england, ive never seen that problem the other way round.

  • no i said compared, to our ear in canada. just because you've never seen it other way around doesn't mean shit. go to louisiana, then we can talk.

  • the differences between a rural irish and a london accent are huge, i moved between the two five years ago and still have difficulty with the irish accents... i'm sure the differences in your two examples are huge but no different to the differences throughout the british isles

  • im irish... lol

  • I so agree with that statement, grew up in TO, but live on the west coast, there is a huge difference all across Canada

  • this show plays during the day on a government owned channel in canada

  • Common mistake.

  • dont think he was using his hand to signify a number, you would normally turn your hand the other way around to do that,,thats what most humans do anyway

  • All fans really should check out the movies of Christopher Guest briefly mentioned here.

  • Guest's movies are great...Guffman, Best in Show, For Your Consideration and my favourite A Mighty Wind - on the DVDs the commentary is actually worth listening to.

  • Don't forget Spinal Tap.

  • Good point...I'd give it an 11.

  • Wow he's a smart guy

hilarious too, I've got to catch Ghost Town now.

  • dont bother its not great, you sud check out his stand up its fuckin great

  • aw, well I'll have to check it out just because I love those types of movies.

And yes oh my god I love his stand up, I've watched almost everything on youtube now.

  • dude ,,go see it ,,,i loved that movie,,, its more of a drama ,,,but still very entertaining ,,and very funny

  • oh my god I just saw it, it was FANTASTIC.

I mean its probably one of my favorite movies this year, I've seen TDK, IM, but idk what it is about Ghost Town. Its like my new comfort movie.

Some of the jokes fall flat at times but its just so lovely and sweet, Ricky should have gotten nominated for some type of an award, he's just brilliant in it. I cant wait until it comes out on dvd and the soundtrack is just amazing.

    ::sigh:: ok done gushing now

  • exactly ,,, its a good movie ,,,and those are hard to come by these days... i mean i follow movies ,,,and most of them is crap...

im actually a fan of Ricky gervaise ,,,,,,check out his podcast ,,,its quite brutal and funny
