I love the ending! Are there some new notes in the fast alternating chords on the final page? Also from the 2nd beat 4th bar of the risoluto (martellato) I could swear I'm hearing a line A,G,E,C which I have never heard before. Be curious to know if there are some changes here or if my ears are playing tricks on me.
I so love her strength and power combined with dexterity, crispness, fluidity and gentle touch when called for. I'm twittering and FB'ing her videos almost every day. The long slim fingers of course help but there's lots of long fingers out there with no talent or soul like that of this pianist.
this are gonna be really helpful when i come to learning this concerto! thank you very much! I may learn the piano orchestral part and play along to this for fun and claim that i've played with Valentina Lisitsa :)!
yeah i sometimes wake up in the middle of the night to get me a glass of milk, stumble across a piano and then just thump out a concerto..i just hope the neighbours are fans!
OMG...Her hands are a BLUR. I love her playing! She looks so comfortable and at ease with the piano... I need to play like that too! Then I will pass my exams with FLYING COLOURS!!! That was a wonderful performance XD
WHAT WAS THAT AT THE END???WHAT THE (BEEP) WAS THAT? ALL YOU SEE IS A BLUR OF HER HANDS HITTING THE KEYS. that's how fast she was playing, and also with perfection
She looks very comfortable in her nice PJs. I play this romantic piece best in my favorite black speedo and black bow tie. It really puts me in the mood and I experience minimal slding on the piano bench. To each his/her own.
I love your Rach. You have the hands of a magician. I think your hands are instilled with all the emotions and passiion you have for the music, that's why your facial expressions and body movements can be reduced to a minimum. Await for your recording of all Rachmaninoff's piano music.
@englishbay789 Hands of a magician? Wtf. Do you think magicians play the piano? I'll tell you a secret. Magicians do magic tricks, not play the piano. People that play the piano are called "pianists." She has the hands of a pianist. You're attempts to write well are just disastrous.
I had the privilege of watching this amazing pianist play this piece with the San Francisco Symphony orchestra on July 8, 2011. In the process of learning more about Valentina Lisitsa, I stumbled across this video, as well as the ones for movements 1 and 2. Thank you, Valentina, for offering this very wonderful way to view and enjoy this amazing piano score in a unique, focused, context.
V - why don't you add in some of the orchestral line with your right hand? (instead of just playing the piano solo). I just recorded a brief snippet and I think it makes for a more complete solo performance with that melodic line in there.
Incredible to say the least: without the orchestra there is nothing to disguise. As usual in Rachmaninoff this score is fiendishly difficult to execute, but she succeeds. Bravo! One almost wishes that at least towards the final ending a Liszt type of transcription is added to fill in the gaps in the melodic line now sadly missing.
amazing! truly superb! I just love Rachmaninov! But plese could you play Prokofiev's 3rd concerto mov3? It's one of my favourite music pieces ever and I'd like to hear it from you! Please!!!
And a part from how wonderfully Valentina Lisitsa plays this, it's incredible! I know this concerto practically by heart because I've heard it so many times, and while she plays, it's like if I can hear the orchestra in my head!
I actually don't think she really cares (I'm familiar with how pianists play when they don't care. I do it all the time; don't tell my teacher.) ...but this is still quite fun to play, even if you DGAF.
Valentina, Can you tell me when the Rach concertos will be released? I saw you at spivey with Hahn awhile back and could even stand the Poison Ives ( well just barely). I'm looking forward to seeing you perform here with the atl chamber players soon. Sam Dixon should engage you for a solo recital there. It would be wonderful. You just have a way of going straight to the hearts and minds of people. I would love to also hear you perform the late Schubert sonatas. Brava!
Your mastery of the noble instrument is stunning, and you are stunning. What a wonderful combination to come together. I have this saved on Favorites and I play it over and over. Thank you so much.
I saw Valentina play in a small church last night (21 Nov 09) in Alexandria, DC. Rach sonata no1 was on the programme, but at last moment she said she was to play Rach 3 without orchestra instead! It was amazing....Valentina - please put this on YouTube!!!!!
i can just imagine what happened before she started recording this. its two in the morning, she wakes up, yawns, walks over to the piano and thinks to herself, im going to play rachmaninov's piano concertos and just sat down and played. i wish you're music was on itunes so i could listen to you 24/7!
Although she's wearing what might look like pajamas, she's actually in a studio (as it says in the description). So maybe she woke up at 2, went to her own piano, practiced a lot, then drove to Abbey road and recorded this.
Would love to watch you sit down at one of the practice pianos at Interlochen Music Camp (Michigan) and start drawing a crowd from adjoining rooms as their curiosity took over I can see them all pushing to get a look-see in the little window at who is making this fabulous sound.
I have listened to this movement hundreds of times with the orchestra, but today, hearing and watching just the piano part was inexpressibly moving. There are so many hidden treasures that you never hear over the orchestra.
Огромное вам спасибо, Валентина. Это мне очень понравился!
Valentina, I would like to suggest that you include in this program, the Rachmaninoff Rhapsodie on a theme by Pagannini, with orquestra and without it
How long does it take someone like you to memorize a musical score like this? It seems like it'd take years to master but you're playing makes it look almost simple! (which of course it isn't!)
I've read that she has a photographic memory, so I'm sure that memory for her requires little or no effort, whereas those of us who don't have that gift must work much harder at it.
Val has a huge, huge repertoire, much of it acquired while still at school - I'll bet she can hardly remember how long it took to learn ! On UK Classic FM she intimated that she could play this piece in her sleep :)
I know she soaks up new material like a sponge - piano is a way of life to Valentina, like breathing is to the rest of us. She could play all day (& I'd be sitting there :)
Comment from an independent observer, who is a well trained pianist & good amateur musician (not myself !):
"..that was truly amazing - her fingers seem to be 10 instruments in their own right. And she's so matter of fact, she makes it look easy! How can anyone make Rach's #2 look easy?! What a talent."
What a unique experience...with the orchestra playing in my mind and Valentina ever so masterfully in the piano...it just blows me away to Neverland!!!
Everyone who has watched this has said it sounds complete without the orchestra. A tribute to the composer, and to the performer who understands its purport so well. Very remarkable - I keep coming back to watch this set of videos and sending the links to people. One person says she plays as if she's a Hindu Goddess with 6 arms :)
I´m just kidding. You look gorgeous. If U really are Valentina let me tell you I didn´t know you before YouTube and at the first listenning I suscribed to your channel immediately. I´d really like to see you playing live, but I live in Argentina and it´s very hard not to have a chance. Best wishes.
I have been waiting for years to hear only the soloist in this and other piano concertos. I discovered hundreds of notes I never heard before. And what a performance! More please!
First: Shes brilliant and the peace is wonderful aso.
but: is my ear out of tune or isn't the piano tuned (not bad but just not perfect tuned,..?)

Rachmaninoff's composition sounds like a mixture of Wagner and Liszt, so crazy and yet philosophic!

Thank you for making me feel so good! Your performance is one of the best that I ever heard! What are you wearing? A pijama?

I´m just kidding. You look gorgeous. If U really are Valentina let me tell you I didn´t know you before YouTube and at the first listenning I suscribed to your channel immediately. I´d really like to see you playing live, but I live in Argentina and it´s very hard not to have a chance. Best wishes.

I love this concerto, and it's really interesting to hear the piano part without the orchestra.
Thanks for sharing this video.

I have been waiting for years to hear only the soloist in this and other piano concertos. I discovered hundreds of notes I never heard before. And what a performance! More please!
