I also remember 1989 very well. It was a scorcher of a summer. I live in Portsmouth and spent all me childhood there. We had Portsmouth Corporation buses (became R&B Admiral in 1990) and later People's Provincial operated on many of the same routes with mainly mk1 Nationals for several years after. Alot of their Nationals were ex Southdown in fact (BCD818L-824L). Sadly, First took over both firms in late 1995 and with that, the older mk1 Nationals soon disappeared followed by them all.

I was in Worthing as a student in the summer of 1988 and this tape brings to me really good memories, thanks!I lived near to the Nisan Building which I´m not sure if it´s the the one that can be seen almost at the end of the vid anybody can tell me the street and the area name of that building? Thanks!
My great great grandfather owned an Omnibus service that was based in Worthing. The business was passed down to my grandfather and his brother but my grandfather sold his share to his brother george. In 1912 he introduced the first motorised buses to Worthing, but in 1919 sold the business to Southdown who at that time were buying up the smaller bus companies. My grandfathers bus service was:
this is the year i got mr driving license,me and others used to go up and down chapel road ,sounds silly looking back, but it was always funthe people you would meet.we called it ''doing the fanbelt''
Yes it was back then & it's much better now for shoppers. Imagine what it would be like there now, nearly 20 years later, with all the extra traffic on the roads.

Even though I'm not from the area and born in '83, I love these steps back in time, checking out the old cars etc

Why 'doing the fanbelt'?
heene 4 years ago
because we seemed to be going from one roundabout to another all the time,''like a fanbelt !''
