I think you might have mixed up the concepts of 'citizen' and 'national'. We, the BN(O) passport holders, are not British citizen, but we are definitely British nationals according to British nationality law.

I am ethnically Chinese have nothing to do with my British nationality. This is the only example in the whole wide world that a governmnet imposed a nationality to people unilateraly without having their consent or application as the Chinese government treated HK people.

According to British nationality law, the British nationality are divided into 6 categories, which included:

1. British citizen

2. British Overseas Territories citizen

3. British Overseas citizen

4. British National (Overseas)

5. British protected person

6. British subject

All of the above are recognized as British national of the UK. We may not are British citizen but the 3.5 million British National (Overseas) are truly British which already stated in law.

if you see yourself as british you should be borned in the UK, not HK, no matter before or after 1997.

Being born in HK before 1997 means that you are HK resident, but not british because you don't enjoy the same right as the british in the UK.

We are chinese nationals now because we are chinese born in HK, please refer to the basic law.

Also, i don't have to renounce my british nationality because i am not british. your british HK passport before 1997 did not allow you to vote who's the prime minister or even the governor of hk. Your residency in HK is authorised by your ID card, not the BNO.

China judge Chinese nationality by place of birth. China consider all chinese born in HK as Chinese because HK is part of China.

The UK do not consider Chinese born in HK as British because it's only a colony.

I think we could at least let Hong Kongers born 1997 live in the United Kingdom, but I don't think we could have done much more than we did.
