A quick extra comment is, this album sort of lacked all of the sorrow and pain that all of their other albums did. I feel as though their next album will definitely bring that element back, now that Ben and Zooey are divorced. I sort of missed the sorrow in their music, so I'm really stoked to hear what will be on their next album.
Plans is a great album... However, I do agree with you on your comment about their sound changing after Transatlanticism.. Narrow Stairs was a great album as a whole, but Transatlanticism was still a great success for its title track and A Lack of Color (In my opinion), and even We Looked Like Giants (One of my personal favorites.) Codes and Keys definitely took a step in a different direction, but it also seems promising while listening all throughout and excites me for what's next!
On a side note, now that Ben Gibbard is no longer married to Zooey, aka the hottest woman in music, I wonder how depressing the lyrics on the next DCFC album are going to be now that he actually has something to be depressed about lol
I've always been a big fan of DCFC, but I also disliked Plans on my first listen. It was a fairly large jump away from Transatlanticism, which is still my favorite album of theirs. However, after a few listens, Plans grew on me, and when Narrow Stairs came out, I really enjoyed that album as well. That being said, I think that this is their strongest effort in a while. I really liked it.
@AsphodelsAce Personally, I believe that Transatlanticism was a few steps down from the Photo Album. But, I love everything by DCFC. Nothing that they have released so far has dissapointed me.
@iamjoshbrooks Plans was fucking great! fuck this guy. He doesn't know shit about writing. That's what makes Death Cab Death Cab. Its so much fun to follow along with Ben as he goes through stages in his life and career.
I'm one of the Death Cab fans that honestly loves Plans and Narrow Stairs and doesn't see the hate on them at all. I think they're both fantastic albums, honestly.
And on that note, Codes and Keys is kind of a disappointment for me. It's not bad, it's just not nearly on the level their past records have been, especially Narrow Stairs which was much more ambitious and dynamic. This one just feels like a collection of pop songs. They're good, some great, but it's not that cohesive for me.
Ive always thought DCFC made simple music, and thats what i like about them ( But you get tired of the song fast). I like this album as much as the other. Btw is it only me who think the " You are a tourist" guitar thing sounds like a Modest mouse riff?
I'm a gigantic Death Cab fan, and I could listen to any release by them over and over. However, I can not stand the new record, at all. I keep trying to listen to it, and I simply dislike it. Dunno why.
Man you're full of cynisism ... i understand the surprise in front of a joyful and catchy album for DCFC, but why not after all ? They've evolved and it's time for them to change their tone. 5/6 LPs of "We have the facts" would've killed me, and I can today enjoy listening to 405, Stay young go dancing and We looked like giants in a row. it gives the band a real depth. I give it a 7,5, but I'm enjoying the album far more than you seem to be, given your nods, weird faces and all ...
@StarvingSound Yeah I agree that's one of their best, even though the only songs on it that really wowed me were from the reissue ("TV Trays", "Tomorrow", "Army Corp", etc.).
@maalbe987 I didn't realize until after I wrote that that most of those songs were demo versions of another CD plus some bonus songs. I knew they had a few CDs before Trans - the first time I heard them - but not that many. So - I'll have to listen to those now.
Yay! I'm happy you enjoyed this album. I was never a big fan of Death Cab, but recently I've tried them out and they're not too bad. I especially loved "You Are a Tourist," which is weird because I'm more into their somber songs. It was just really cool and refreshing to hear some optimism after drowning in negativity lately.
My favorite song by Death Cab overall would probably be "Styrofoam Plates." The lyrics really connected with me personally, having a deadbeat dad and all.
I actually really enjoyed Plans and Transatlantacism. And enjoyed them before and after signing to Atlantic Records. I don't understand the hate toward these albums.
Sorry but DCFC is one of the most overrated bands. Ben Gibbard's vocals are really annoying and more like something you would hear from a Pop Punk band or say Owl City. I think because of that his vocals just taint the instrumentals for me. Plus they always came off like a wannabe version of The Shins and now it appears they're trying to be Arcade Fire.Seriously over hyped and overrated.
@superfly299 First, you are dearly mistaken. Death cab started in 98, before the shins, before arcade fire and DEFINITELY before owl city. The reason owl city sounds like death cab- is because adam young (?) trying to sound like ben gibbard. How death cab sounds like the shins or arcade fire OR owl city is very confusing to me? DCFC are one of the first independent bands to emerge onto the scene and make it, with longer than a decade career they are still holding strong, very -solid- band
@TheFermiParadox Well I heard The Shins before I heard DCFC. So even if they did start before The Shins I'm automatically going to compare them to what I've already heard. Anyways that's really besides the point. I just don't like Death Cab for Cutie because I can't stand Ben Gibbard's vocals.
@TheFermiParadox Um, you know indie music is older than ten years, right? They are no where near the first to make it. In fact there are plenty that could have made it before them but chose not to.
Anthony, you hit the title track right on the head with your Arcade fire comment. I also got that feeling from the strings in the chorus. Does Doors Unlocked & open give you a "meet me at the equinox" feel in the intro? One thing you missed that I thought I'd hear, was Gibbards lyricism. It is a craft displayed throughout all of their discography. Most prominent in Narrow Stairs, which didn't get talked about. Analogy central!!!! Baller review Anthony!

The first thing I'd like to say about this album.....It's never felt so good to feel like 2004 again. Anthony, you hit the title track right on the head with your Arcade fire comment. I also got that feeling from the strings in the chorus. One thing you missed that I thought I'd hear was Gibbards lyricism. It is a craft displayed throughout all of their discography. I felt they improved when they changed direction and released "PLANS." I hate "Transatlanticism" still. Hated it back when it came out and still do today.
@o0FfoX0o I think music could be contemplative and sensitive without being obnoxiously wussy or bookish. I like stuff like Belle and Sebastian,Neil Young, Midlake and Kurt Vile. I just find Ben Gibbards vocal and lyric style too be too whiny and saccharine for me.
Ben Gibbard has collaborated in the past with a singer-songwriter named David Bazan...he came out with a new album a few weeks ago called Strange Negotiations. You should review it!
Bon Iver PLEASE its just brilliant. all though suck it and see would be good too. Also, I despised everything about Interpol besides Turn On the Bright Lights (like a lot of people) for the longest time, but their other records have really grown on me over the years.
Sadly.. or maybe surprisingly.. I didn't like it. I finished the song.. but I didn't enjoy it really, it felt like homework. The vocals were just bland... I would compare this album to a vegetarian cup o' noodles that isn't spicy that has those little freeze dried corn things in it. Why you might ask? Because it's delicious to find out that it's cup o' noodles, but it isn't tasty enough for me.. I mean I'll eat because it's noodles but I won't enjoy it. :/ Get it?
Death Cab is painfully vanilla. They are only relevant to teen girl and wussy beta male types who wish they could get with those girls but most likely won't.
I loved the album. This one was a lot more upbeat than Plans and Narrow Stairs, which is very strange for a Death Cab album, but it was nice. My favorites are definitely You Are a Tourist, St. Peters Cathedral, and Some Boys. I thought they were very good.

i resisted this album, but listened to it when i was in the record store the other day. i MUCH preferred the new Mountain Goats album but this album was better than expected.
I hate Death Cab For Cutie, just because they sound like twats. On an unrelated note, review suck it and see please. You don't have to or anything, but if you don't I'll stick my diabetic cat in the oven.
The thing I like about Fantano is that even if he doesn't like an album he makes me want to listen to it.

I think it would be cool if you reviewed "D" by white denim. I like it a lot, but what do you think?

I thoroughly enjoyed this album. I thought it was catchy and effective. At points if felt like a slightly more high paced *transatlanticism*.

I hate Death Cab For Cutie, just because they sound like twats. On an unrelated note, review suck it and see please. You don't have to or anything, but if you don't I'll stick my diabetic cat in the oven.
