Hi, i just saw this information and got shocked, i had a dream many weeks ago about several fireballs coming from space making impact on a large area with mountains.

Is there any extended information about this if it happened or not? i think we have serious problems comming soon with those fragments if the collision happened on all that chances.

It's nowhere near 45km in size. How can you say you haven't heard the size and then claim you've heard anywhere from 500km-3m?

The official size of the nucleus is 3-5km and the coma is possibly as large as 200,000km. Punch that into your simulator and then report the outcome.

And since most of the "data" being withheld from the public by the national institutions that have access to the largest scopes, etc., we have nothing to do but speculate. The debris field behind the comet is the biggest concern since we are to pass through the tail just days after it crosses path with our orbit. I speculate there will be more effect than "zero". :-)

My initial belief, like you, was that it is something to be concerned about, which after getting as much information as possible I've decided that it's of no further concern to me as it's of no concern to NOAA/NASA/ISAR/AAGS etc. With atleast some research noting it's insignificant mass and distance and nothing relevant suggesting otherwise, there is no reason for me to believe it imposes any threat whatsoever to our planetary system. I'll enjoy watching is pass though.

Have you taken the 'Z' Axis co-ords into the equation? remember Elenin is 40deg offset, so it only crosses our plane twice. These are the only point you could have a collision, or an alignment for that matter.

But I will give you some scientific facts. Elenin moves at a speed of 60 km/s at its closest to the sun, which drops to 43 km/s at 1 AU. Just calculate how big the escape velocity is of the other object to see it can gravitationally be attracted captured enough to collide. V_Orbital = Sqrt[(G M)/r], V_Escape = V_Orbital time Sqrt(2). M is your mass, r is the distance to act on.
