This is the exact reason why we need more companies creating computers, video game consoles, cell phones etc.. The microsoft bully aspect is being seen now with xbox vs ps3 vs wii on the Call of Duty series. Microsoft sees the money to be made in the series so they bought out exclusivity rights for it. Even though the game was made for all consoles, they try to make it as much xbox exclusive as possible. If only Google or Apple would make a console.
Who gives a shit? Antitrust laws are bullshit anyways. Oh no, Microsoft decided to bundle Internet Explorer with Windows! THAT'S ILLEGAL, OFF TO JAIL YOU GO! Give me a break.
The trial is about Microsoft bundling their products together. The courts accused Microsoft for monopolizing. They bundled their products like Internet Explore, Word, and whatever the hell else existed back then with their computers. The courts ruling was overturned in 2004 and the judge was found in violation of something. Every company does this now. Why not charge Apple? They, unlike Microsoft, chain you to their software. Or how about Monsanto? The seed monoply. Go Microsoft!
I'm not fond of Gates, but if that were me there, I would have been fucking annoyed to waste my time on stupid questions like that. What the hell were they thinking when hiring a computer illiterate moron to go up against Gates? If you have to ask what the definition of a web browser is, you should be thrown out.
@kamilmytnik Its got nothing to do with what the person knows, Its called establishing baseline definition before they begin arguing about stuff and make "allege" statements.
The courtroom is an interesting place. There are certain motivations that become contrary between two parties there. The result is the motivation to be as unhelpful as possible while still not violating specific mandates. It's the opposite of normal social interaction. Consequently you get highly intelligent (and very very very highly paid) people who appear to be the stupidest people you've ever met.
Why are so many people supporting something ILLEGAL. Just because Bill Gates did it, doesn't make it right! Sure he's an awesome guy, but like all major corporations Microsoft deals with a lotta things which are improper or illegal, the government simply set them right.
No wonder the US economy is on the brink. When you allow tens of thousands of highly paid lawyers slowing down innovation, because that is what they do, you simply cannot win in the long term.
Hu Jintao, Chinas president, is an engineer - Obama is a lawyer. Just saying.
For all the times ive heard he is an asshole in this deposition, he is actually pretty polite. These are quite technical questions but wrapped up in a simplistic way, so how can you agree to them without question when you are legally required to be completely accurate.
Why does he keep quotoing "his" dictionary, you think he wrote the dictionary? Who even cares what it says, its not some document he authorized, He is just trying to either annoy him or is playing up to the cameras.
@Jaymes360 laws are laws, its their job to prosecute criminals, whether they are violent offenders or white collar crimes for millions of dollars. I'm guessing you don't like "free market" economy's, because that what MS was breaking...
This whole issue is completely ridiculous! A developer is not allowed to add features to their products?! They should call in Government Motors tomorrow for a hearing on how stereos are not necessary in cars and should be left out so as to help aftermarket stereo makers. Abolish Sherman antitrust!
@JJAstley Frankly, the time it takes to answer a question has absolutely no reflection of how someone manages a company. Bill Gates is phrasing his answers carefully because the questioner is looking for something to support the case; the questioner is looking for bias answers, Bill is giving him fact-based replies. On a side note, The Bill and Linda Gates Foundation uses his wealth to research and solve many foreign and domestic issues. He doesn't simply make money, he utilizes his wealth.
@MatthewM1A1 Gates was a lawyer first in many ways any way, so I'm surprised they even tried. Then again, makes some interesting viewing so not a complete waste of time.
@viperpulse so who gives a fuck if MSFT bundles Windows with IE? Mac does it with Safari too. If I dont want to use neither I simply download another darn browser and choose as my preferable browser. Plus, Gates isnt putting a gun at your head and telling you to buy a PC, you want a Mac or Linux/UNIX at that time go ahead and buy damn one. You ppl are jealous that Gates became rich as shit, even Jobs said Gates realized what software was before the rest of them did.
@Jbroks86 And here comes sir fuck wit writing this in 2011, a time where a choice of multiple browsers for download is not a problem! We are talking the 90's you absolute twit!! Go back to that time and you'll see you had little to no choice after Navigator from Netscape was wiped out of the market!.
@Jbroks86 And NO you green and wet behind the ears moron, google a man by the name of Gary Kildall and you'll learn about something called CPM. And while you are at it, learn that there once was a time where you had Atari, Acorn, Amstrad, Commodore, MSX, Sinclair...etc which meant a very healthy market full of innovation and creativity due to the competitiveness!
What do you know about the Industry and where anything came from or started as other than growing up with Windows and Apple?
No matter what you think of Gates. You can hate his fucking guts, be an Open Source fanboy, Google, Apple, Mozilla, EU fanboy. This man whatever is smarter than the government and his competitors. This guy regardless of who else comes out is the most important person in computer history. As for Gates, basically never self-implicated himself despite the guy up there wanting him to.
Totally agree with all of that. Great comment. Gates is not only very smart, he's damn shrewd too. I used to think that was the definition of a successful businessman. Besides, he didn't corner the market in the end which means the market actually (shock horror) works, doesn't it? Well, kind of!
@Jbroks86 The memoir, which he distributed only to a few friends, expressed his frustration that people did not seem to value elegance in software,[14] and it said of Gates, "He is divisive. He is manipulative. He is a user. He has taken much from me and the industry." In an appendix he called DOS "plain and simple theft" because its first 26 system calls worked the same as CP/M's.[15] He accused IBM of contriving the price difference between PC-DOS and CP/M-86 in order to marginalize CP/M.
the guy was a genius, say what you want but if it weren't for his entrepeneurship computers wouldn't be anything that they are today. yea he was agressive, but this is a beautiful system we call capitalism, all companies are aggressive, if you're not you don't survive. that's a fact, the only difference in this is that he is also a genius in addition to his aggressive competition. yea he lost the case, but look microsoft is still dominating the market.
guys youre wasting your time microsoft is stil there and leader in soft ware.
and its not true that they "stole" every thing come on be real "stole"?
the hole thing is just because microsoft makes software on their own operating system end because of that those who allready made those software LOST to microsoft. that's it. if you hate bill gates so mutch dont even think about using windows or xbox. i'm not a fan of microsoft but because they are so big everybody just hates it.
Microsoft never created anything. Just bought everything and forced their software on consumers through vendors and their OS. Which is what this case's allegations against Microsoft were all about. Antitrust. It's ironic to see the real Microsoft.
@viperpulse I don't see how it's nothing but their right to put their own products in their own OS and how do you know that they never created anything? Do you work there?
@1nsp1r4t10n4l Sure they are right to put their own products in their OS as long as it's not a browser because that is cheating the browser wars. They need to offer that separately. As Bill Gates is being called out on for doing that and killing the Netscape company. Of course he denies that IE is even a browser by calling it some techie jargon, but he fools nobody. And how do I know they never created anything? It's public knowledge. Do your homework.
@YasuEntertainement No. They didn't lose the argument. Are you high? Microsoft LOST its case, now they have to report their crap annually. And Netscape lost because Microsoft was not supposed to embed IE into Windows, but offer it separate since they are separate software suites. That'd be like embedding Office into Windows. The simple fact is, people buy a computer and use whatever is on it, unsavvy people, whic dominate the planet. So if you had them DL a browser IE would not have won
Hey douchebag Microsoft never forced their product down any ones throat. They marketed their products better and the market rewarded them for their success. Maybe your just full of envy.
Pondering this a bit deeper and wondering how this would have played out now. My guess is that either way it turned out it would be a much much shorter affair (maybe a week) and if MS won, we'' d all be wondering exactly when and how they paid off officials or if they lost astonished, shocked and impressed that government officials managed to see through this as well as everyone else.
@sehoujay So I guess Google and Jobs are too. After all the EU and France are going after them the same way the US is for MSFT for anti-trust. You people will not be happy to we are using computers using ENIACs again.
@Jbroks86 The previous post was a clear statement from Gary Kildall. But then you will just say that Gary was jealous too won't you. Nothing is fact to you except that everything you believe about Bill is correct.
