This festival will be set on every full moon day in November. And it's opened, everyone can join it.

Position is near Mae Jo University, 20 km. north from Chiangmai downtown.

Don't worry, civil aviation authority would clear the sky especially for this. All flight to/from CNX will be postponed.

And surprisingly, there's almost no fire accident from these lanterns reported. 'Coz if you do it right, the fire will put out in the sky, no more harm when they land.

@666ASPEN666 I couldn't agree more. Luckily fireworks is freaking banned in Ireland. No matter if people say it looks 'pretty' - it's pollutio, in every aspect. If you want fireworks wait for the next fucking thunderstorm or if you're lucky a meteor :b

Beautiful video. Love the sky lanterns. I was in Chiang Mai for New Years in January.

I think the lanterns, though messy, aren't as big a fire hazard as the fireworks that the few stupid people attach on the end. I saw a few people get burns on their head from falling sparkler bits.

These operate on the same principle as a hot-air balloon, obviously. They're actually easy to make, if you have a little craftsmanship and the proper materials.

Lightweight wire, a bunch of paper, something that will burn to keep the balloon ascending for a while without getting blown out...

My only complaint is that my country has legislated these kinds of hazardous, risky, beautiful, festive activities away. Buying large fireworks in California is harder than buying drugs and guns.

It feels like I'm paralyzed after a failed attempt at jellyfishing... this is mind numbingly beautiful. The way the camera only panned 90 degrees of the view and still made it seem like the whole place is surrounded by sky lanterns was too perfect a shot to be coincidental! The focus on the late lantern even offered a climax --thus structure-- to this otherwise empty indulgence. I wish to spell my beloved's name in the night sky with these stars someday.
