Ace ( my dog ) has really bad arthritis at his stifle joints ( knee joints ) and he is not using his hind legs in swimming as much he is using the front half of his body. He is a rescue dog - all the puppies were put to sleep as they were a result of bad breeding - only he survived and I took him - as he was the largest and the "pick of the litter". I'm sure he feels pain but that doesnt seem to affect his drive to swim ( in fact probably he likes the feeling of not having to bear weight )
Okay, this Bull Terrier can swim and he seems to be enjoying himself because he keeps doing it for a long time. But if you look closely you see that his ass end is sinking downward and he has to work pretty hard at staying afloat. I see a Doberman in the video, too, and Dobies do the same thing. I know, because I've had Dobies. I took my daughter's Golden Retriever to the lake last weekend and when he swims his back is flat above the water line and he moves effortlessly through the water.

Yes, I can see he's a bullie. He looks like a motorboat in the water. It's a somewhat unusual swimming method, but I guess they have energy to burn.

Go Bully!
I imagine that swimming helps to avoid pain in the joints. I prefer underwater exercises to recover my knee rather walking
