its not apples fault...its the crappy at and t network of america, australia seems to have the best in the world as there are no reported antenna problems, my iphone 4 works fine anyway i hold it

I heard today that Jobs released a statement telling people to simply not hold the phone in a way that covers the bottom left hand corner. Even thouh it's the most common, natural grip for any object like that. Thanks, Steve! Either that, or you buy a protector band for even more cash. It's pretty likely, if you ask me, that Apple left this in deliberately on some units to tempt people to part with more cash. You can't even use flash on it without tampering. God, Apple are fucking assholes.

FAIL OF THE YEAR! Cell phones are radios. Ever see a radio with the antenna wrapped around the radio? Take a portable shortwave radio and touch the telescopic antenna- you will hear the pitch change as if you were slightly turning the tuning knob. You would never see such a stupid design on a Motorola phone as Motorola has been a radio engineering company for decades! LMAO! Looking forward to my new Droid X!

I have this exact same problem and have gone through 3 iPhones now. And they keep giving me phones with this same issue. It totally sucks! I cant even put a case on it in a place where its not absolutely full service or it does what is shown above. Unbelievable...

Well truth, I got a new one straight from apple and the reception is noticably better. Even with the same firmware version. So sorry kiddy, but there must have been something wrong with the phone. I don't care what the instructions say. That phone had defect written all over it. So yes if anyone else has the problem and can go to an att store, hold it next to the same phone with the same version fw and see a difference in signal, I would recommend sending it in. That's what I did. Good luck
if you read the instruction booklet, it says not to over the lower part of the phone [ any phone with a internal antenna will tell you the same exact thing, but they'll tell you not to cover a specific area] because thats where the internal antenna is located -- which you're obviously doing. Theres nothing wrong with your service or phone.
Well I just went up to AT&T the other day to compare my signal with their demo phones. Apparently mine is defective, all of there demo models had full signal on edge and 3G. Put mine right next to them holding them the same way and they were still getting 5 bars to my 2 bars. So of yours is getting poor reception check your local store and compare them. Hope this fixes it.

my iphone 3g is giving 1-3 bars when inside a house or a building. On the highway i get 5 bars, guess i need to be driving 55 mph for it to work right.
Ever try the same thing with the original iPhone? Nothing happens and if it did, it wasn't as severe of a drop as the 3g iPhone. Weak antenna that apple decided to use to me.
Seems the antenna is being covered by your hand which absorbs the tower signal. I have that with my iPhn 3G too. It does not like it if you have your hand on the top side (near the bars). Not good.
its probably not the iPhone 3G's hardware. every phone measures signal strength differently. maybe the new iPhone gets such good reception that apple made 1 or 2 bars equal 5 bars on the previous version. i always have perfect reception even with one bar on mine. i mean it appears that yes the iphone 3g rarely has full signal strength but, in my experience, 1 bar is very strong.
to be honest I think most of these 3g Edge GPRS phones have that issue. I have a Black Jack II that does pretty much the same thing. My co-worker with an older phone can get signal but I can't. Usually I have to restart and it hits the right tower. I'm pretty sure this isnt just an iphone problem
Yes that is why my phone has a big E on it for Edge also known as 2g. All 3g phones or at least the ones on Cingular are meant to work in both 2g and 3g areas. Plus I have 3g turned off for that reason.
