Maybe I'm just stuck in the old school, but I loved Frank Welker as Megatron. He just seemed to sinister and ruthless, but he could also pull off that deceptive and ultimately groveling voice when Megatron needed to really scramble for his life. Another part of it though is the filters. The voice filters are used so extensively that they're an inseparable part of the character, and changing that can produce a very different result.
I gotta admit that prefer Hugo Weaving as Megatron. I think Frank Welker worked in the cartoon but as an action movie I believe you need a deeper and more powerful voice. Also I do not think Hugo Weaving gives a more devil-like sound but just a tougher voice. But then again that's just my opinion.

@mitzen98, as much as I hate to agree with you because Frank Welker is and forever will be Megatron, his voice wouldn't have fit for the new look. I only say that because with me, i would picture the old megatron the enitre time I looked at the new one. Of course optimus's voice worked because for the most part he still looked the same. I wonder if they tried to come up with the classic look for the movie but couldn't. I wish they could have used Starscreams old voice too.

No they are not good enough reasons. Sentinel Prime was always loyal to autobots from beginging till his death. Hell he sacrificed his life on Cybertron so he could save Optimus and passed him his matrix + he would never made deal with Decepticons, never. Jetfire was treated like shit, robots don't get old, what was he doing in that museum is beyond me and he was never a Decepticon. Jetfire was the first Autobot Lieutenant. As for problem 3 that was just lame and lazy writing.

For Gen 1 fans such as myself Michael Bays Go-Bots would have been better seeing as we see the very fact none of the Decepticons are who they are supposed to be and Bay is a Nazi-Capitalist so agree with Fox on that one! Im 17, I didn't grow up w G1 but I do watch n like it when I can. Welker voicing the movie Megatron to me doesn't sound menacing, works for cartoons. To me Hugo Weaving is best for any Megatron especially This....I do like weaker voice though. IDK why some people get offended when anything G1 based universe isn't 100% G1.

Though honestly lack of Frank Weller is less distressing than the movies suffering from to much human screen time. I wanted to see Transformers, not awkward teenage dork saves the day.

Why are people saying we should be thankful for the movies? I'm not going to be thankful for paying for trash. All Bay did was make me pop in the animated movie DVD so I could wash his production from my brain. But apparently the movie was better than sex for the dude in the background.

I personally really like Weaving as an actor, but I don't get why he was cast for Megatron's voice. His voice was so distorted, I couldn't tell it was him anyway (aside from the "there's something on your mind..." line from ROTF. Sounded just like Agent Smith).

I'm sorry, although I love Hugo Weaving and think he's voice was fine for the movie, Bay still destroyed it. In fact, he destroyed many things with the Transformers movies, but what can you do? They really did have the potential to be excellent. Too much human involvement, Prime is a mug (seriously, he says: "my bad" in the first film), it's hard to make out the Transformers because they're so mechanical-looking and Bay couldn't suppress his "shakey camera" urges, among many other problems.
@erazman A "break from character" (read: inconsistency) is PRECISELY the sign of a bad director's work! You obviously know very little about films then. Yes, it's for comic relief, but it doesn't work with his character. That's why you have Bumblebee, Jazz, etc. It doesn't sit right for Optimus Prime as he's never been a comedian (especially not one with such stupid humour). There's enough humour in the film with LaBeouf already. I don't think it's me who needs to grow up, mate.
Micheal Bay's movies were enjoyable and a lot of fun. But i'm not blind to the fact that they destroyed teh Decepticons very badly. I never liked Welker's voice, but this fits in PERFECTLY with Megatron in the movie.
He sounds like a cheesy villain from the 80s with this voice. I guess that's kinda the point...but aside from the die-hard G1 fans, few would prefer this voice.

For the people that think that Frank Welker's (the REAL Megatron) voice would not work for this character I say you need to watch the new Transformers: Prime cartoon. Frank Welker is voicing Megatron there and it sounds awesome! It still sounds like Megatron a "little" bit because it's Frank Welker obviously, but he gave the voice a whole new dimension that it never had before. It's lower, darker, and more evil sounding. Welker is a genius and his talent was wasted on the Bayformers crap.
The G1 voice is good for the G1 character design. Hugo Weaving's voice for the live action fits this version of Megatron. Lets face it, G1 Megatron (NOT Galvitron, as he has a personality difference) was a pansy compared to this modern rendition. So he needed a more bad-ass voice to fit him.
All of the characters underwent some personality tweaks and for the most part (but not in all regards) I think those changes were good. They made the characters stronger in mind and body.

I never actually liked the old Transformers much. This stuff, I can appreciate.
I know there will be an uproar on this, but it's my opinion that robots that are CGI'd so well they might as well be real is better than animation.

i enjoyed the movies and i kinda liked hugo weaving as ol megs...at first i was a bit peeved but...it grew on me...im very happy about frank welker doing megs in prime however...i think welker has a more cartoon oriented voice than a live action movie and i appreciate both just as much <333

Anyways, Hugo Weaving has an amazing voice, but Bay should have used him for someone else. Sigh. I don't know about Welker not fitting, his voice sounds godly as always in War for Cybertron and TF: Prime. Time HAS been kind to Welker and Cullen both.

I personally really like Weaving as an actor, but I don't get why he was cast for Megatron's voice. His voice was so distorted, I couldn't tell it was him anyway (aside from the "there's something on your mind..." line from ROTF. Sounded just like Agent Smith).

You do also realize that G1 was made of blocks and cubes with a few other polygons thrown in, and they didn't ACTUALLY transform, right?

I'm sorry, although I love Hugo Weaving and think he's voice was fine for the movie, Bay still destroyed it. In fact, he destroyed many things with the Transformers movies, but what can you do? They really did have the potential to be excellent. Too much human involvement, Prime is a mug (seriously, he says: "my bad" in the first film), it's hard to make out the Transformers because they're so mechanical-looking and Bay couldn't suppress his "shakey camera" urges, among many other problems.

@erazman A "break from character" (read: inconsistency) is PRECISELY the sign of a bad director's work! You obviously know very little about films then. Yes, it's for comic relief, but it doesn't work with his character. That's why you have Bumblebee, Jazz, etc. It doesn't sit right for Optimus Prime as he's never been a comedian (especially not one with such stupid humour). There's enough humour in the film with LaBeouf already. I don't think it's me who needs to grow up, mate.

They think that the movies are the only TF stories around. They need to be taught of the original series, and not of a group of piles of scrap metal walking around that look nothing like Transformers. Just because something converts to a vehicle, doesn't mean it's a true Transformer. You can hardly find good G1 looking TFs anymore.

Well, they look like piles of junk. If they drew the G1 characters the way they looked in the movie. The show might've lasted about 3 episodes.
You say he wanted to make the movie 'real'. So, you have free thinking robots who are millions of years old, from another planet, who can change into vehicles, aircraft, and weapons. The 'realism' has already been ripped to shreds now. Remember how big the allspark was initially? Later on it shrunk so that a human could carry it. Lol.

@demaggedon....Yes, I'm aware of the string theory. At this point it's all theory. There may be laws of physics that we don't know about. That said, we can only go by what we know. This was Bay's chance to go beyond 'what we know' given that we have beings who are far more advanced than us. They should be able to do things that we can't explain or comprehend. Back to the Allspark. At first. it took up a whole room. It was even bigger than Bumblebee. Later on, a human is running with it. Insane.

Just listen to Frank's Megatron voice for the movie tie in games, It has gotten old and rusty. Frank is even aware of this, that’s why he came up with a WHOLE NEW Megatron voice for Transformers: Prime.

Honestly.... prefer the new Megatron voice.
The old one was ridiculously cheesey (it had its place, it was a children's 1980's cartoon, I watched it growing up). But, this makes it more adult, more frightening a character, which was the point.
Megatron is SUPPOSED to be an evil guy. He can't do that as a raspy-smoker voice on a kids' show. The new voice reflects how his character was meant to be perceived

For the people that think that Frank Welker's (the REAL Megatron) voice would not work for this character I say you need to watch the new Transformers: Prime cartoon. Frank Welker is voicing Megatron there and it sounds awesome! It still sounds like Megatron a "little" bit because it's Frank Welker obviously, but he gave the voice a whole new dimension that it never had before. It's lower, darker, and more evil sounding. Welker is a genius and his talent was wasted on the Bayformers crap.

The G1 voice is good for the G1 character design. Hugo Weaving's voice for the live action fits this version of Megatron. Lets face it, G1 Megatron (NOT Galvitron, as he has a personality difference) was a pansy compared to this modern rendition. So he needed a more bad-ass voice to fit him.
All of the characters underwent some personality tweaks and for the most part (but not in all regards) I think those changes were good. They made the characters stronger in mind and body.
