He couldn't have put it in better words about the use of elbows. It takes away from the 1 on 1 competitiveness of the fight. This is why i never got into MMA. "Rear naked chokes" is a nice word that they use on TV so that they dont have to say "he's on a sleeper hold." Sleeper holds are dangerous and if a kid sees it, he will used it. I did, when i was in the 5th grade. A bigger kid used to beat me up and i put him on one. He passed out. I thought i killed him. It was too much for me. He lived.
What made Benny a hit back in the day was that when he fought. "his art showed up with him " meaning that when he kicked they LOOKED like karate kicks, when he punched, he looked like a boxer and when he threw, he looked like a judoka. He didn't look like a wild raging maniac like so many others did in that era. He also did the spinning kicks that conventional wisdom claimed to be impossible to do.
i like benny the jet too much...but if we want to say the truth we must say that the name kick boxing came from the first official fight of Mr joe Lewis some many years before!!!
it was the first in Usa and Europe fight in the ring ...when some other guys just playing karate fights!!!
if all this guys ...benny the jet , Joe lewis, bill wallace , Mr smith, and many others was born after 1993...maybe would have played in mma fights...cause they were born for extreme sports of martial arts!!!!
benny did the commentary for early ufc events he got offered a fight agianst royce gracie but they couldnt agree to money then the offer was not there once the gracies found out benny was very experienced in judo.
@iamgodan I think your right, we were talking about a month ago and he said had a place in the "Valley" saying he was living close to the Movie Stars and doing fight choreography for films. Being from Australia I wasn't sure what "the Valley" meant? Thanks for the info :)
Kickboxing was a Japanese style from the 60's which Osama Noiguchi founded, the first kickboxing event was held in 1966, it was very similar to Muay Thai, except it had throws.
Joe Lewis was the man that founded and popularised kickboxing (originally called Full Contact Karate) in the West, and it was Bill 'Superfoot' Wallace that took the sport forward.
Benny was a pioneer in kickboxing and one of the best in the sport. I personally trained with Benny, sparred with Benny and fought on the same card with Benny. It was a true honor to be any part with this legends storied way.
He hung in there and won agaist the tai boxers, but straight out calls it brutal and admits he would not want his kids to see (be part of) it. This guy is a class act.
Would love to see PKA come back. This blood lust MMA hysteria reminds me of the animals that watched the killings in the roman coliseum.
He never defeat any Thai boxer. But I have to agree with him on Thai boxing being not suited for family entertainment. In Thailand, the sport is primarily for gambling. When the Thais want to see action in the ring, they tend to tune to Western boxing.
I am wondering where those him being Basque theory came from. For years, he's been known for half-Mexican, and half-Blackfoot Indian. Then, all of sudden, the whole Basque thing came out from nowhere. It sounds like he has some problem with him being half Mexican.
@Domzdream Okinawan Karate, of any stripe, is a far cry from Americanized Point Karate. Despite Benny's Dissatisfaction with the level of contact in Americanized Karate, he did not fight in any way similar to Japanese or Okinawan Karateka.
No of course he didnt. But What I'm saying is, my sensei MOVED like he did. Very crisp, quick, sure footed movements. If you saw him in action, you'd agree with me.
@Domzdream Oh, similarity in skill and quality, I apologize for misunderstanding, I agree Benny was a good fighter, and If your Sensei is his equal, you are lucky.
I thought you meant that Benny used traditional Karate. And as a Karateka myself, Who practices Shotokan, I found that totally insane, despite his skill, It would be like comparing Olympic WTF TKD or ATA Dojangs to Traditional ITF Dojangs.
@bushidoartss I emphatically said he didn't use traditional Shotokan, he was experienced in American point Karate, which is non-contact, tap-and-win. He then retrained to compete full contact with boxing gloves.
Shotokan is does not use boxing gloves, isn't designed for the 'ring' and is most certainly is one of the harder types of Karate.
Your point about Shotokan's effectiveness is moot, and utter shite, but that's neither here nor there.
Learn to read, and stop fucking stalking me, weirdo.
@bushidoartss You're wrong, and fuck off and leave me alone, I don't care about your hatred for Karate, I won't debate with a childish loser who deletes comments when he's being owned because he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.
I respect Benny, In addition, I love the way he fought Jackie Chan. They say that he had given Jackie the 'best fight ' ever on youtube. My favorite kick boxer is Bill Superfoot Wallace because of his record, 60 mph kick, & aggresive attacks. I know that this is 'Benny' page, but who do you think would win regardless to who you like best, & be honest, & why. Take care.
Thank Bruce Lee, and Joe Lewis for the sport of kickboxing.. Bruce Lee came up with the concept, and Joe Lewis enforced it to the masses. Ben the Jet became an Icon in it. Crazy isn't it! ; D
I'm a former student of Sensei Urquidez, his way of life and humble spirit inspired me to get into boxing. I've trained under Stan Ward "COACH" and everytime i trained, he was there giving good insight to his fighters. I still live by Ukidokan, which is the way of life. So whoevers hating on this man and giving him a bad wrap, dont down a person cause he's accomplished more than what you have in your lifetime.
brandonotiz69, why? Benny was an amazing fighter. He had started KB in the USA. Why would he waste countless thousands to throw fights.. brandonortiz69 Absolute Trash! Let's see you fight.. -anyone- and post it on youtube. You talk pretty tough on the internet. You say you worked for him and he's a decent fighter. How would you know he's only a -decent- fighter without fighting him yourself? Years after he retired is when you worked for him. After alcohol/age.. Okay he's not as fast.
Benny The Jet is a fake and fraud. It is well known and documented that he had paid fighters (many) to take falls so as to build up his record. Everyone is so facinated with his character and his so-called record that they have actually failed to do more background study. I had worked for the man many years ago and for his psychotic wife Sara and had discovered so much about who benny the jet really is and believe me that he's nothing other then a some what decent fighter.
@brandonortiz69 thats bullshit for sure, theres no way he could afford to pay opponents. He was an incredible fighter, ive seen all his matches, there were no falls taken.Had a ferocious self belief and fighting spirit.I dont agree with his disdain for mma though its irrational.
@brandonortiz69 if what you say is true it would become the watergate of modern martial arts history. I don´t think anyone have ever seen Benny Urquidez fight and not feel inspired by him
@brandonortiz69 , LoL yeah sure you expect us to believe some guy on youtube? why is there always someone out to discredit martial artists or actors like you! norris, Lee, chan, seagal, van damme, Li, now jet I've seem people like you all the time saying what isn't real or not LoL cut that crap! dude didn't pay anybody he had fair fights in the ring the proof is right here in this vid!
@brandonortiz69 yeah, and I have worked for Madonna and discovered she can't sing .. lol.. If you think that Benny The Jet was faking all his fights, then he must be hell of a good actor! =) , btw his spirit is amazing, and nobody can deny that!
What kind of accent does Benny have anyway?
He looks fucking wild too.. Which makes him even more of a badass when it comes to casting him in film
