duck in cover only gavekids a false sense of security after all if you are close enough to an a-bomb then you can be completly obliterated your only hope is a concrete bunker that is airtight seal but there were a lot of them back then
Bear in mind, that at the time this was made, nukes were smaller than 100 Kt, nuclear arsenals were measured in dozens, and the weapons were delivered by bombers. A very different sort of threat than thousands of megaton yield weapons delivered by MIRVed ICBMs.
made in the 50s which by then, there were already thermonuclear weapons in the megaton range, just that the only way to deliver them at the time was by bombers
How would you "know when the danger is over?" When you feel the skin melting off your face and you know you're a goner? Also, I don't care for the way the guy says "DUCK AND COVER" at 7:57. Why does he say it this way? Gives me the fukkin creeps.
You know, the saddest thing was the government tested these bombs in the desert and they knew no one would survive the blast, much less the radioactive fallout. I think the real point was to help us fear the Russians and the Cubans.
The biggest load of crap ever thrusted before the American public at that time. Even if you "Duck and Cover" you would still be vaporized by the blast. It would probably work if you were like 50 miles away.
There is a very "matter of fact" tone to this video. It's almost as if they want you to expect weekly nuclear flahes... Kids just ducking and covering all over the place. I guess your less likely to be any sort of dissenter when you're constantly worried about be attacked and bombed. That sounds familiar.
Wow...This film is so messed up XD The monkey blowing itself up and ducking under a desk to save themselves from an atomic attack. Did people actually believe this?
No!!!! I remember seeing the mushroom clouds and heat blasts in the films and thinking, right, and this desk is going to protect me from that! Look what it did to the damn house, get real!

The Swiss built bunkers for their entire population.
Indeed, the "evil" Soviets spent more on civil defence than America.
The reason America didn't have any meaningful civil defence was because a scared population is much more easier to manipulate into supporting wars.
Its disgusting.

For those of you for whom this is ancient history, I actually did these things when I was a kid. There were real practices.

A newspaper wouldn't save you from getting burned. Heck, it be the first thing to go up in flames.
Was this the best the Civil Defense team can do?

Duck and cover would be fine, unless you were close enough for instant inceneration.
Frightening and traumatic for children.
