Yes, please enlighten the youtube community and list all of the terrible 6 string bass players. You make a list of bad 6 string players, and i will come up with one that's twice as long, consisting of 4-string bassists. But that's not the point. The point is that it's not the bassist's job to "shine in the background" and stay out of the limelight. Based off of that, Geddy Lee and Jaco are/were absolutely terrible bass players.
if you would have actually taken the time to read and comprehend what i wrote, you would not be falsely accusing me of this blasphemy. one would derive that Jaco is terrible, based on the irrational logic that GarryNull has provided us with. I'm just saying that there are a lot more 4 string players than there are 6. therefore, it's more than likely that you will have a larger amount of shitty 4 string players.
It's okay. Just for the record, I play both 4 and 6 string basses. I think it's pretty safe to say that the majority of bassists start off playing 4 strings. Each one has it's own thing. My J bass(4) is used for slap and pop/funky stuff but my Ibanez(6) is faster and easier to play; better for metal and my style of playing.
EXCELLENT!!! it certainly transmit the message of joy - So happy to have had the opportunity to check with you at the Bass clinic in Burlington Ontario.... oh by the way... Emma said she will never forget the experience either... check our channel if you have the chance

he's playing bach on a freaking electric bass. I don't think it could get much worse than that, no matter how much rubato he puts into it. God this is so incredibly ridiculous
I was just kidding, they are actually chopsticks but the resting piece makes it look like a cross! It should be a cross but the chopsticks are an ode to Norm's solo debut Pondering the Sushi.

I have made many similar comments on 6 string bass players on this kinda stuff.
I tell them: play guitar or piano aside from playing the bass. Thats what I do.
This stuff doesn't really impress me.
A bass player playing some amazing bass "in the background" of a tune is more impressive.
The only really impressive type of this playing is by Jeff Berlin on "Dixie", played solo on a 4 string,. . which I actually learned. I really don't like 6 string basses at all.
I would have to say that its clearly you who "don't know shit about music" if you can HONESTLY say that this doesn't sound good.. I have been a musician studying under some amazing teachers for the past 22 years, so I like to think that I know a thing or 2 about music.. and this is amazing.. Norm is a WONDERFUL player, and people who post comments like yours area clearly jealous of his God given talent
Your implications that 6 string basses are sub standard to 4 string basses is ridiculous. There are plenty of amazing 4,5, and 6 string bass players. It's not about how many strings you have, it's about how you play them and some bass players feel that a 6 string bass will expand their range and possibilities of expression. I don't know what anybody should find wrong with that... I suppose you don't like 7 string guitars as well?
Norm...you are one of the best bass players I have ever played with...and that was a very challenging piece...but you definitely did it justice. I haven't seen you in years, hope things are well with you.
chopsticks... engraved... he explains it in the 3rd episode of his blog... where he interviews the maker of that bass... Michael Tobias.... ever heard of Tobias basses??.... he makes them...
well, the two lines are pictures of chopsticks. I think he was asking what's the "thing". It's an extra piece that shortens the distance between the body and the strings. It's just something he prefers.
the wood thing is a "slap ramp" it reduces the distance between the body and the strings to slap better... the lines are chopsticks with sushi this inlays are because of his first solo album "Pondering The Sushi"
I did this with "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and playing solo like this on bass is one of the hardest things to do, like backing a moving truck into a compact parking spot. You make the bass sing and the arrangement is so musical what a treat!
i took some notes at a christian musicians conference in washington in your class, and i still go through them every now and then. you showed me a lotta cool stuff. youre an awesome bass player

If you listen closely, he is complimenting the melody he himself is playing.

I never understood why people go around posting negative comments on people's videos, especially if there's nothing wrong with them.
That and it's a 5-string, not a 6-string.
