@Kulkulcan88: They have to tilt the nose forward in order to get forward thrust. As they get airspeed, they get some lift from the air moving over and under the rotor disk. It works a lot better than it looks.
I used to hear them monsters heading West back to MCAS Miramar from 10 miles away..I ran outside everytime and had to wait 3 minutes...Anyone know where they were coming from?
@eljan81 The helicopter they used for Blackout was a MH-53 from Kirtland AFB and I imagine they used the instructor pilots from there as well. And believe it or not they have rolled and looped 53's before. Back when it was an A model but still pretty badass..
That is some serious effing lift for the pilot to be able to pitch the nose that steep and not even pull up. My one shitter flight off of LHA 4 to Cherry Point was cool but boring - kind of like riding in a C130. Guess that how you want your shitter rides smooth and uneventful.
@JammyD2579 in a way yes, the Marine corps and the Army have their own versions, there is alot to explain about both of them so google it or something to find out more about them.
@ovis86 Nope!! thata a USMC CH53E. Note the 3 turbines, and canted tail boom. The MH 53 only had 2 turbines and a straight tailboom.... besides no Air Force pilot would push the envelope like that.....
Maybe the tail rotor is canted because when they designed it based on the 53D and increased the main rotor diameter they had to move the main rotor mast forward but they couldnt make the fuselage longer in front cause the machine still had to fit on the same size carrier elevators as the earlier models so to balance they had to cant the tail rotor to get a little vertical component out of it? Just a guess...
@BIILYBOB999 With the tail rotor being at such an angle it actually helps to generate lift when at a hover relieving pressure on the main rotor assembly.
@BIILYBOB999 common misconception snubb, it is tilted primarily to help give the helicopter a nicer attitude at hover. helis tend to get pushed one direction or the other by the tail rotor due to the lift(horizontally) it creates, the pilot has to correct this by angling the whole helicopter to counter the tail rotors lift. by tilting the tail rotor into the down wash of the main blades, it still does its job, while allowing the heli to sit much more level. it would create 3% of the lift at best
@barcode625 I'm an A&P and also a heli pilot. I've been taught, and read, countless times, from many sources, that the TR in a tractor configuration is angled up to produce additional lift. I can't see how it's angle would have any effect on translating tendency or hover attitude. I know that the MR on most helicopters is pre-rigged, or tilted to the side a couple degrees to counter act for translating tendency.
@edcoondog straight from the NATOPS manual, esentially the operators manual if you will, the 53E hovers at about 5 degrees left wing up and 8 degrees nose up, the tilted T/R has less side force vector then a normally vertical one, also it does generate a nominal amount of lift to help with the nose up attitude but NATOPS says its less then 5% of the total lift the heli generates. close friend of mine is a 53 mech, he is with the squadron that is currently testing new models equipment on the 53E
The pilot is Frank Tefft, the Sikorsky Chief Project Pilot on the CH-53E and a fine TP and engineer. He flew its first flight, and lead the development program and service introduction.
@bronco8585 another great set of vids on here you can find by searching Pave Low, or Last Flight of the Pave Low. there are several and some show the retirement flight from inside the formation. Made me homesick for Hurlbert Field. it amazes me that these birds have been around for forty years. Sad to see them. But I live right near the bone yard here in Tucson, so I can drive by and still see them sitting in mothballs, (tears)
@jayfrans CH-53 is common name for the basic chopper. The HH-53 had air to air refuel capability and infared system for rescue. MH-53 was PaveLow that had advanced radar and looks like a duckbill on front of cockpit. MH and HH 53 got a E suffix when they added a third engine. Navy, Marines and Air Force used variations of the 53 but AF retied its fleet in 2007. I worked on the HH and PaveLow in the 80's at 1st Special Ops, Hurlbert, Florida

@DrLickensnatch Thanks for the info man. And thanks for your service to our people! =D *Shake your hand* Does the Army have all sorts of choppers for Special Ops? What different choppers are used for Medical missions? Just curious...
@bronco8585 I was in the Air Force, 1st Spec Ops Wing so I am not totally familiar with Army birds. Also it was near 30 years ago, lol, We did a joint operation with 82nd Airborne and one of their flight units. They had Blackhawks, which were new at the time, Loachs , (think Blackhawk Down four guys on outriggers) and Cobras. Watched 120 choppers, all kinds and sizes, lift off in unison one day, Heaven roared and ground shook! I thanked God, they weren't coming after me, lol
@whitemotorsportz I loved PCing 53s. I cant wait to get back to it. Everything else afterwards is boring and not challenging. Tell an 18 guy that you got a fly bird with 100 MAFs and they wont believe you
This clip reminds me of this time I was in a helicopter with a bunch of macho men being loud and provoking the helicopter pilot to do some stunts. When we were flying through the mountain ranges the pilot (a girl) dipped it so we were looking directly at the ground as she manouvered it round cliff faces and the cockpit was silent. Its the scariest shit Ive ever experienced especially when the front of the helicopter is clear.
