Actually, a 304 c.i. V8 was a factory option in these cars...a little-known "secret" among the AMC racers was that the AMC V8's, from the 304 to the 401, were exactly the same externally, including size and weight. A dealership in Mesa, AZ, Randall AMC, would take your new 304 Gremlin, swap a 401 in it, and honor the factory warranty. I had one I put a T-10 4spd and a 360 out of a Javelin into. It'd get air under the front wheels in 1st and second fairly easy on street tires (M50/15's).

@exemplar1 Believe it or not there's actually a BUNCH of cars out there that were worse than the Yugo. Like most anything built by British Leyland. Or how about a Reliant Robin? Or a Renault LeCar? How about a Ssangyong? Or the Austin Princess? The list goes on and on and on... FAR worse than the Yugo... But if you've never been out of the US, then yeah, I guess the Yugo is pretty much the worst you've had the chance to see. I had a Yugo that lasted for over 200K miles w/ very few problems.
