  • Melodie, have you seen the place where she sleeps, if something falls on her, she could possibly die, I think she shouldn't live in that appartement it's a danger to herself, she should be hospitalised for her own good because she is putting herself in danger

  • Melodie breaks my heart. Does anyone know what became of her? I read in this thread that she became homeless; was she ever able to get help? I feel such sympathy for her because she was all alone and REALLY wanted help.

  • The hypnotists office is cluttered.

  • I burst right into tears when Melody cried 'don't go' :( I'm so sad to hear she's homeless.

  • Melody's such a cute little old lady. :) I like her

  • Whats with big brother being big mother? Let people be a hazard to themselves, if her shit falls on her and she dies would it really be so bad? We all die, and we all want to save eachother and ourselves from death, but it is natural. I find it to be sad that she is now homeless, but at least she is free.

    LIBERTY OR DEATH!

  • @trsdos and you'll be singing the same tune if it happens to you or a loved one, right...? Talk about maturity...

  • @akissy

if WHAT happened to me or a loved one? death? sorry to say but its part of reality. we all die.

  • @trsdos Oh, I think that way too, I even find beauty in death. But I'm not just gonna let them run around in a rampage. I'll try to keep them alive as long as nature lets me. And as for strangers, I would like someone to take care of my loved ones or myself if anybody else could... it's in our human nature... but of course you could lack it, so you wouldn't understand what I'm saying. ^^

  • does anyone know what caused melodies head injury?

  • my heart nearly borke when she was saying "don't go don't go" in that sad nearly crying voice. Made her seem very alone and vulnerable. I feel really bad for her.

  • 10 days to get rid of all that crap? One person could not do it. What that place needs is like 20 minimalists to go in and act as a hurricane to rid all that crap! I would gladly be on that team.

  • Hypnosis isnt a proven method. Basically all studies ive seen show its not effective. Now i havent seen it with hoarding having said that, ive seen studies with smoking, Snusing (Swedish tobacco product), retrieving memory etc.

The studies in retrieving lost memory is the most interesting and show that no real memory is retrieved but the input from the therapist is mixed together.

With Smoking it shows no benefit. So i dint see why it would work with hoarding.

  • does hypnosis really work?

  • The "Quack" hypnotists and consellors don't help.

  • Melody is putting her own and other's lives in danger and unfortunately something has to be done to fix that right away. There isn't time for years of counselling in this case, at least not while she is in that apartment.

Inevitably, Melody is clearly headed for the loony bin.

  • Melody has way too much stuff...it was unreasonable for the landlord to expect it to be cleared out in 10 days. He should have given her at least 30 days, like any regular eviction notice.

  • I should watch this show everytime I need to do some cleaning, to get me motivated.

  • I feel so much for Melody! Poor girl, I really hope she gets all the help she needs.

  • awwww poor melody "don't go don't go" gosh poor thing needs alot of help.

  • Its ironic that the lanlord gives her an eviction notice on a sheet of paper thusly adding to the clutter

  • And my mom calls my room messy T-T

  • Lul

  • I think if Melody isn't responding to therapy lol.She should be thrown into a mental hospital and not allowed to have even 1 possesion of her own for a month or more lol.

  • poor melody

  • After watching this i went on a cleaning spree...

  • @TaishaConfessionals I know! Everytime I watch an episode I freak out and get a box and just start throwing stuff in it that I don't need or use!

  • Wouldn't cognitive behavioural therapy be a better option than hypnotherapy?

  • I wouldn't expect anything more coherent from a 16 year old whose favourited videos include rectal examinations.

  • @johnd94

My goodness. I am positively overwhelmed by the ocean of wit that flows fourth from your mouth.

One could argue that your wit is so extreme that it has formed some sort of "witnami".

  • @jessiessica "Witnami" is just about the greatest snap I've ever heard. It is so dry and so sharp...it makes my heart explode with joy.

  • @jessiessica a wetnami? is that like when you cum in your pants jess?

  • @LeBullshitDetector no, a wItnami is when I back hand you across the face.

  • Both therapies are good. Personally, I prefer hypnotherapy as it is relaxing and anxiety reducing, rather CBT can increase the anxiety (esp. at the beginning). I've had great results with hypnotherapy. Also, it seems as though less sessions are needed with hypnotherapy.

  • wouldn't shooting them in the face be a better option than anything else?

  • @jessiessica That's a great idea. I think that they need several, several different therapies-all at once. One thing only is clearly not powerful enough.

  • I wish the pendulum of psychiatric care would swing back to the middle. It went from the extreme of horrible psych hospitals where the patients had no rights and no hope. To this other extreme of "you're on your own". There has to be a middle ground that gives good care and respects patients rights, yet provides for safety of themselves and those around them. I'm very sorry to hear Melody is homeless from this.

  • @johnd94 don't you have anything better to do? And don't give me any of your asshole crap.

  • @jessiessica Apparently they don't have anything better to do. waste of space really.

  • @johnd94 Why do you keep posting this weird post? And what does Richard Dawkins even have to do with this subject matter? I see you have cut and pasted this all over this show. What's the connection? Seriously-

  • I have no doubt Melody has a medical condition. As I'm watching this, it's pretty obvious that her hoarding is putting her and her neighbours in danger. Isn't that the threshold for being forced into a psych hospital? Danger to self and/or others? Just letting them be is not treatment in my opinion.

  • I agree. Unfortunately, the 'system' can't/won't help Melody enough. She's required to remember to bring different legal documents here and there and her brain trauma gets in the way of being able to function to do this. And with all the cutbacks in social services, there doesn't seem to be any service that can or will help. It's difficult to get into a psych hospital in California. Last I heard she was homeless.

  • Poor Melody. She has a medical condition and should not be evicted.

  • This is a mental disorder and there is a scale which establishes the degree a person hoards. It is called the NSGCD Clutter Hoarding Scale. It is the Official Organizational Assessment Tool. You can internet search this and also find it in pdf format.

  • Melody has some sort of developmental delay, kind of like she is about the age of an 8 year old.

She should be living in a group home. Not on her own, she has no friends or family to help her...group home living is for her.

  • hypnosis is snake oil

  • That poor lady...she can't help it. She was almost in tears when the organizer left!

  • She can fight the eviction order if she brings in say a medical letter from a doctor and the professional organiser. The first saying that she has a diagnosed medical condition, and the second saying that the eviction process is undermining the professional organizer as well as the hoarder's plan of action.

  • hypnosis.. what a fail fortune teller, miss cleo scam.

  • @shaydyknight: Yeah, I really don't see how hypnosis can solve a hoarding problem. Hypnosis is temporary, this hoarding condition is not.

  • Cyrex94

As a matter of FACT having a terminal illness like Cancer etc does effect your own "Contribution to society" my brother was terminally ill with Leukaemia, in the 2 years he had it he went down hill more often then not, the good days where he felt reasonably okay to get on with what life he had left were becoming less and less, there was NO WAY he could of held down a job in that condition. So how about you get real and shut the fuck up, mmkay?!

    Contribution to society my ASS!

  • Yes, it's a shame there isn't enough support of the right kind. Yet while most people can benefit from hypnotherapy, Melanie had a severe brain injury. I spoke with her about whether she thought hypnotherapy could help and we felt it could help more in stress reduction as it most likely wouldn't help her brain injury area. The couple, as you saw, had great results with hypnotherapy, but it was only one session which isn't enough to fix everything about their home and marriage.

  • @easykeytolife

A brain injury you say? That may be a clue. Was she always a hoarder or did the symptoms manifest after the brain injury? Very curious.

  • It's a shame that people on government healthcare don't have proper acsess to mental health services! Melanie could really benefit from hypnotherapy!

  • It broke my heart when the woman said she and her husband held hands for the first time in a couple of years... THAT is the part that disturbed me the most... what a miserable existence!

  • Yeah I can't help wondering how many of these people have an underlying depression that isn't being treated...I know when I am more depressed I postpone decision, which leads to my environment becoming more cluttered. It's not like I *want* the stuff to pile up, I just can't deal with one more decision or one more choice. I wish they would get proper treatment and not just a cleaning service. Intervention doesn't work so well with drug users either.

  • I feel sorry for her to an extent but also feel if she knows that the hoarding is wrong and can express that to others she has the capacity to stop it. If an eviction notice cant make her stop, than she should live by the landfill and hoard to her heart's content.

  • Knowing you have a mental disorder doesn't change the fact that you have a mental disorder in any way. Depressed people know they have depression and schizophrenics know they are schizophrenic, but does that mean they can just stop because they know they have a problem? No. If you have a brain injury and you know you have memory problems, it doesn't make you any better at remembering things. They know they are hoarders, but that doesn't make it any easier to throw away things.

  • KuraKaze: I know you are trying to argue a good point here but you cant say depressed people know they depressed and schizophrenics know they are schizophrenic. Schizophrenia is categorized by having a total break from reality, so i doubt they understand whats happening to them. And Depressed people tend to see themselves as intrinsically flawed in a unique way and blame themself instead of depression.

  • I am actually studying clinical psychology. Understanding their state of mind is the core idea of behavioural cognitive therapy, and basically that is to help them understand their condition and change their way of thinking, thus eleviating the condition. This is a very good way of treating clinical depression. It is very possible to help depressed people see that their way of thinking of themselves as flawed is not correct and they can change it.

  • Not all Schizophrenics are totally removed from reality, that is only the most severe case. A lot of Schizophreniccs, when they are on medication, are aware of their problems. I know this from real life interviews with patients. They can talk about their paranoia or hallucinations etc. as just that, symptoms brought on by their illness. They understand very well that it is part of their illness but that does not mean they can stop experiencing it.

  • KK thanks for the clarification

  • You can't just "wake up" from a mental illness. And according to you... if you fell sick right now, and cannot work and cannot "contribute to society", everyone should just leave you to die somewhere and ignore you? Like, its your fault you got sick, so go deal with it yourself. Like knowing you're sick is going to magically cure your sickness, if that's true there will be no mental illness and no cancer and no diseases in the world.

  • If it took her a year to refil her apartment with trash - she knows what she is doing, it is not a build up over time. Best place for Melodie to live is the landfill to be honest, she would be in her element. All well and good feeling sorry for her but what about her neighbours.. the stink etc. .omg..

hypnotise them to use the vacumn lol...

  • This lady is really weird, one minute she makes NO SENSE then the next she's really articulate and comes across as really smart. Odd.

  • She had a major head injury many years ago. So, she isn't always able to think in the normal way of processing. She's a very nice woman and is trying. But the system is failing her. She is now homeless.

  • Ahh I see. Aww that's really sad. :( Why didn't the show help her?!

  • You can only help someone so much.

  • 8 months ago you wrote that Melodie was homeless(in a shelter?), but what is she doing now April, 2009??

  • This has been a great help for me. I am a hoarder and I am getting ready to get married so I am pumped to start clearing out. My ADD is the only thing holding me back.

  • It's now 10 months later, how is your hoarding now?
