@usgop Carter leveled with the American people, especially about energy and put energy policies in place which helped lower oil usage and then oil usage growth rates. Then, in his biggest accomplishment, he appointed Paul Volker to the federal reserve chairman position and it was he who caused the Reagan fat years. Standing behind Volker was the best thing that Reagan did as president. They were calling for Volker's head and he defended him.

My main respect for Jimmy Carter is that he told the American people the truth, which is something that no president has done since, mostly because of what happened to Carter. Americans NEED to hear the truth, that we are broke, that our credit rating is in danger, we are insolvent, pension plans are all underfunded, we have nearly 100 trillion in unfunded liabilities and politicians, rep and dem, are acting like we just need a minor policy adjustment.

@christo930 In case you're wondering why I say that Reagan's biggest accomplishment was defending Volker, you have to understand what Volker did. He raised the fed rate to 21.5% which had an INITIAL effect of crashing the economy and causing a deep recession, but it saved the dollar, and caused a glut of savings. Savings are the lifeblood of an economy. A high savings rate allows businesses to borrow money at low rates and expand their businesses or start new ones that will grow the economy.

That's why Ross Perot sucks! He cost George H. W. Bush a landslide victory in 1992 (he would have only lost Arkansas, DC, New York, and Maryland and the last 2 by incredibly small margins). In 1996, if Perot didn't run Bob Dole could have squeaked into a close victory, even though Clinton would have just barely won the popular vote.
