  • British people all pronounce iguana in the way Dawkins does. We also say "jag-yoo-ar" instead of "jag-war".

    Maybe it's got something to do with our comparatively tiny popular of Spanish speakers, thus meaning we've Anglicized the pronunciation of these Spanish words? Just a theory.

  • No, it's just different phonetic processes affecting pronunciation. In the American dialects, the vowel before another vowel turns into it's consonant counterpart. U's consonant counterpart is w. This is the same thing that happens to Iupiter to make it Jupiter (pronounced yoo-pee-ter). British English just has a different way of handling these, by breaking doubled vowels of that sort into separate syllables. Neither method is really correct or has anything to do with the original pronunciation.

  • Nice. A bit more profound than most Dawkins output. Good to see some of the secular 'science is poetry in motion' type ideas coming out. I've just closed the Ancestor's Tale. Highly recommend it to all as each chapter carries a similar tale to that of the Lava Lizards here - only with the incessant scientific rigour that a book can carry more than a video short. Good one RD!
