This is one of THE most famous and legendary games on the ZX Spectrum. I bought all of the Ultimate games as and when they were released, and this is my favourite of the lot, apart from Jetpac and Atic Atac. They are all good in some way though.
This brings me back... I recall playing this game on spec as a 5-year old kid. After all this time it hasnt lost its 'je ne se quoi' and its more than I can say about any other game I played since. Awesome!
When I first saw this game it was amazing and as you say it still looks great. Great graphics and still as playable today. My number one game for the speccy.
It is said to have been programmed and then kept by Ultimate when they sold their name to US Gold. Whether that is true is a mystery! Both Knight Lore and Alien8 were released at the same time. But you can probably consider Alien8 as a follow on.
Ah, sweet memories :)))) I played Knight Lore as a kid - which made other girls look at me as if I was some weirdo. Girls were not supposed to indulge in such activities :)))) Thanx a lot for posting this :)))))
Underwurlde was friggin frustrating too, i could never get the hang of bouncing all over the screen, definitly my least favourite Ultimate game, Sabre Wulf being the best imo.
Yeah Underwurlde was tough but with the map it was a lot easier. Have a mate guide you round while you play just like rally driving. Sabre Wulf was a classic game.
Cheers mate, I think you owe me a cider...lol! Yeah pity about MireMare, although it is said to exist. Probably in the bottom of the programmers drawer.
You got £50 for a game on the covertape and quite a few were sold. Unfortunately the firm representing me never gave me a penny. Wouldnt answer calls or letter. Took the money and ran. Until a year ago that f*cking company was credited on WOS for my games. The guys at WOS credited it back to me. Yesterday i found on WOS a label called Venturesoft nicked a fanzine of mine called Newsdesk. THE DIRTY SIDE OF SPECTRUM COPYRIGHT!!!
You can forget any of those suggestions. Those games take weeks of playing. Could never get past the 2nd last screen on manic miner. Tech Ted was probably the hardest game on the speccy. Completed Dynamite Dan with a poke but it was still tough.
I wanted Bugaboo for ages until finally getting a pirate. A game all on one level. Impossible and never heard of anyone finishing it. Wager they made it too hard as it was only at max 10 move game.
Ive never heard of this game! Looks pretty much the same as alien 8, is it??

Glad you enjoyed it mate! A fantastic game!

Miremare presumably was the next Ultimate project which never surfaced. I believe Alien 8 followed this.

Yeah! Females would take the same attitude with guys who were into computers. That's why my girlfriend is a ZX Spectrum +3!

I have Conman the Barbaric on the YS covertape. I remembered the game after putting it up last night.

Well done Spinny. Another game in the bag. What's your next conquest? Manic Miner? Technician Ted? Dynamite Dan?

Yeah I was kinda joking. Them there tough games. What about Bugaboo the Flea? hehe, That was an impossible game.
EvildeadCellar 4 years ago
Bugaboo was a nightmare. Get near the top and fall all the way back to the beginning. Putting a poke in that game was useless.
