I like the idea of this bass but I'd probably adjust the EQ a bit to give it that nice tone that accentuates the nuances that make an upright, like the "mwah" sound & the string slap on the neck, graet tone otherwise =)
Stagg it's a VERY BAD MARK. Palatino it's better tahn Stagg, always thinking in cheap, no very good and chinesse marks. I had and Stagg and it's was horrible, and now I had and Palatino and it's better... never as a yamaha or a ns
Hey nice playing! I've got one of these basses and they are so great for gigs. The only problem I've had is finding the right amp. It's annoying that the bass is so portable but then having to drive to gigs because of the size and weight of my amp. I was going to buy a Gallien-Kreuger MB150E but then read a lot of comments about reliability issues. What amp do you use and do you have the same problems?
I already have a Stagg EUB with presto ultralights, considering the difference of price im hesitating in the upgrade... did you try the stagg perhaps ?
No I never heard of the Stagg EUB is that a new range?. I ve seen the EDB range which was around £300-£400 in the market. It had some interesting gadgets on it like mp3 input... Its sounds like a good value for money around £1500 cheaper than the yamaha silent bass. If you have the time, try all the products out there for yourself. I prefer comparing with a really good acoustic so I know what I m expecting as feeling and sound when playing the instrument. Yamaha satisfied both 4 Me.
I really think the important key in choosing your instrument is to know what you actually expect from the instrument even before going to try one ((although there is an exception of first love in rare cases ;)) If I were you I would Firstly try to find out why I feel like upgrading my instrument? are thesereasons stopping me from soundind better, playing better, practicing ...etc...
Once I discovered these reasons I would know I wouldnt want the same with my new instrument.
Second I would try the best instruments in the market, even the specialist ones that i cannot afford, so that I know what a good instrument feels and sounds like. This would make it easier to compare. Then you know the rest......
Thats beautiful. I am a beginner and I want to know where a good place would be to RENT one from, it doesnt have to be electric, i just want a good quality bass to try out. Also, what tuning are you in?
Ask around at local music shops, especially ones that rent band and orchestra instruments, but even those may not have double basses. Violin shops and luthiers may be able to point you in the right direction as well. Google is your friend!
I'm thinking about playing this instrument but i don't know. I play bass guitar, but i don't know. It looks very challenging. There's no frets! Ah! Plus you need big hands to be effective. Idk nice job by the way tho!
Ive always found these instruments kind of pointless! I mean you can get that tone out of a fretless, which is much easier to play. and u cant replicate the sound of an upright. and plus, on a gig, people just want to see the upright, its an aesthetic thing. no one wants to see a stick of wood
Thanks, The point for me is that the fretboard of this instrument feels just like a double bass, You just cant get that feeling with an upright stick bass or a fretless electric. As for the sound exept for the acoustic harmonics and finger sounds , its very close to an amplified acoustic, when playing loud many advantages too as you never get feedback. What the people want to see that İ dont know but usually İ-m more interested in what they want to hear ;) Peace!
yeah man, u get that really late 70's/80's kind of growl sound. u should try playing with the side of your finger instead of the tip, it will help with tone
@husnudogacan It's true...music fans that aren't musicians, and sometimes even the ones that are are expecting to see a traditional jazz band, big wooden bass included. Seems irrelevant as long as it sounds good but it's true. I know a killer bassist who has lost several gigs when he told the bandleader he would be playing an electric upright. Sad but true.
Ok the band leader was looking for a wooden bass , not a bass player. Or maybe he was looking for both. Respect to the band leader. :))) Keep him out of my way until I own a nice wooden Acoustic :))))
but at least you can bow these instruments with relatively the same technique of an upright. A fretless bass guitar is damn near impossible to bow unless you adjust the strings so that they arch like a violin bridge
You are possibly right Wilko. But you never know what you might feel when playing over changes, I was possibly living at a different world at the time I was recording this one ;)
Reviews depend on what the writer of the review is looking for & how much they have found what they were looking for after trying the instrument. For example: I was originally looking for an upright that sounded and felt like an upright however more mobile and silent. Compared to what I was originally looking for my review of the stagg edb would be:A Vertical stick that Sounds and feels like an electric-fretless.(actually there is something called a stick bass which fits into this description).
sorry im not a beginner. i meant "young" considering my age not my playing experience. and over the course of my music career ive found that stagg stuff sucks, but thanks anyway
Thanks so much for posting this. That is some fine playing. I am a younger player who is looking to buying my own upright, and i can't decide between a yamaha electric upright or a traditional acoustic. How do you like yours? how does in compare to a traditional acoustic? any answers would help. Thanks!
I am in the same dilemma as you, and after 2-3 months of research I have decided to buy an acoustic, the sound is just so much jazzier than an electric, but the electrics are more practical, for transportation, and such. If you want an electric, I think the SLB200 is the best, but for half the price, you can get an Aria Oak Lite, witch sound almost as good, and with that you get more value-for-money, 'cause its 50% of the price for 90% of the sound compared to the Yamaha.
I have tried some aria products in the past, like you said they were cheap. However I can never think of comparing top models of Yamaha instruments with any Aria product on the market (in terms of sound quality). Again its a matter of taste so I still respect those musicians that choose to use aria products. After all if I had tried an Aria product and the sound of the instrument fully satisfied me I would probably change my mind. Until that day comes I will stick with the established brands...
A list of electrics you should look into, and google
Aria Oak Lite
SLB200 (of cause)
Eminence
Warwick Triumph
Stagg EDB (not that good)
and, i think you should try the NS design basses, but personally i dont like them, the sound is not very good, the 'play-a-billity' is terrible, and it doesn't feel like an acoustic bass at all, hope it could help :D

In my enviroment the slb had some advantages like:
*Being able to practice quietly at night
* being able to carry the instrument on busses easily
*no feedback problems
*no storage problems
*And further more.
The only disadvantage I can think of compared to the acoustic is that with the acoustic you dont always need amplification
However with the yamaha you would.
In short I highly recommend the slb 200 if you are looking to buy an electric upright that also sounds good.
