I have had this pass done on me before, my first instinct told me what ever he was doing was wrong, however I have never been able to exploit the weakness's I perceived. Great video, lots of details. Kudos for the well made video.
no disrespect intended but Im a 10th planet user and this doesnt not seem like a safe pass, especially if you plant the hand to the mat, it will land you in the middle of the new york, and if you do get the left leg down either way your going to get put into the jiu claw for an omo plata finish or the twister sweep
@genjibob No disrespect taken, Brother. I freely admit that I have never tried this pass against a high level rubber guard player, but I will reiterate that I've never been caught (swept or submitted) in an oma plata from this pass. Triangle's were a pain in the butt in the beginning, but the steps of the vid alleviated that dilemma also.
@chimchimgarcia I drilled this pass after I watched your video and I tried it on a high rubber guard student and instead of even going for an omo plata he shot a gogo plata on, I think its a good pass, i just need to utilize it more and put it on my toolbelt
@acampos2 Failing to secure the underhook as described in the vid is the only way I can see a kimura happening. As for the OP, I've had plenty of people try it and it's only ever ended with either: 1- reset 2- Me getting their back 3- Passing with no variation 4 - Passing with variation
@121069 Lol, I've used this pass and its variations only in the ADCC Trials, as I hadn't implemented it fully in my game until then. By "world bjj", do you mean the Mundials? If so, Roberto Tozi, the widely accepted inventor of the pass was famous for it. Google him. As for me, It allowed me to open, but not pass unfortunately, both Luke Stewart's and Chris Moriarty's guards, and I'd venture to say they're both better competitors than I am. I saw the basis for this on Margarida's instructional.
@chimchimgarcia i've been working on this move for a while but, one thing that always gives me trouble is when i start to isolate and stack myself on his leg, after ive killed his hips, they always go to body triangle. how do i stop that?
Cool vid, thanks for taking the time to break it down and explain. It looks like this would be the perfect way to negate the rubber guard if you can't posture up and providing you kill the hips and stay as heavy and close as possible.
@chimchimgarcia Look..... For you to say that there is nothing left to invent and if someone does think that they made something up has ego problems, then you put in the whole "Braboplta" thing at the bottom of the screen is kinda, uh, I dont know.... Maybe an ego problem? I mean no disrespect. And if everyone had that same mentality then stuff like the rubber guard would not exist. And Im not saying eddie bravo invented the RG, but he did invent new subs and sweeps from the RG. Agreed?
You mean overhook? If you are keeping your weight on his bottom leg and staying high enough on his chest, that omoplata is going to be anything but easy.
Yes. The person passing is giving the underhook, the person in guard has the overhook. This pass just violates one of the basic rules of being in the guard, NEVER put your hand or arm on the mat. Always keep your arms on your opponent. I've seen Mike Fowler do a very similar pass and he says very clearly, if your opponent is flexible and goes for an omoplata then you have to abort the guard pass and try something else.
C´mon... it´s impossible to roll for a omoplata if you have your torso locked down. Besides, you hips are twisted to the right, so you have no base to do a body turn. It´s a unorthodox pass, but Margarida did it great with it, and he is maybe one of the best BJJ fighters ever.
What keeps your oponent from attacking the exposed arm on the far side (the under hooked arm) I have had had even 300 pound Chupa II try this on me and I just push his head to the side bring the knee on the back up and attack the exposed arm with kimura. Is there a control that is missing or is that simply a counter
When following the steps of the pass, as soon as my opponent attempts to elevate his leg to my back I accelerate the pass. You can't attack an OP or Kimura AND keep your guard closed. Pushing on my head would certainly irritate me, but technically it's hardly a significant counter to the pass.
Pushing the head is not meant to be a significant counter it only allows me to better shift position and create my angle. SO if I understand correctly this attack is a potential counter unless as you state the person "accelerates his pass" . Thanks for the reply!
I want to thank you for this. I have terrible lower back problems, and often have a hard time keeping posture.
I saw this pass a ways back and have been trying to make it work with some, but limited success. Watching your thorough step by step presentation just gave me some serious moments of understanding my it works sometimes for me and not others. I'm gonna make this my go to pass now when I keep getting broken down.
its a good guard pass but very easy to fuck up, if ur wait it off by one inch u are off balance. my instructer taught me , but i have never got it down. I think the pass will teach u a lot about weight distrubtion when u are on top.
Very fair comment. I will add by saying most top controlling movements will require the same understanding of weight distribution. So, basically, we're left with always certain "Practice makes perfect!". ;)
Ok, I'm a high level purple that's pretty damn flexible (no problem using the whole RG system). I was kind of skeptical of this pass. I've seen high level guys go for it and make it work so I knew there had to be something I was missing the couple of times I tried it. Well I spent all saturday working it, and yeah, it does shut down the RG and platas if you kill the hips. I think the trick is to really switch hard, and pull with underhook. If its done right there is no plata.

Doesn't the guy have an easy omaplata on your right arm there since you are giving him the underhook?

jw, instead of redoing step 1, around 4.35, cant you just post your left hand under his back, and switch sides? what would result in that?
