I think smudging only looks bad when u don't have a good understanding of light n shadows (values), in other words not knowing how to draw. But it also depends on the medium, smudging with charcoal does look a hell of a lot better then graphite. As for the art teacher that said that? well there's a reason why so many pros say they're self-taught..
Shawn was a few grads ahead of me in highschool (Cortland NY) He did a life-size Wolverine airbrushing on my friends wall, and a few other things in town. Bryan Bancroft (our tattoo artist) got Shawn into tattooing, and he's already mastered it! I'm saving my other arm just for him! haha Sam -
Very good use of the pinpoint eraser, this guy is incredible and paints like the old masters even though he has devised his own techniques and brought the whole thing up to date with unique ideas and subject matter.
hey grindtime i dont hate on u tube so dont take me bad but art divides humans from hipocrytes it doesnt matter how you do it art is art id prefer an eraser to smudge cuz its a bitch to get off my fingers
Great drawing, this is just a sketch though... In sketching, smudging with your fingers should be just fine. I'm sure if Shawn Barber really wanted to he would take this sketch as a rough draft and spend some time on a new one and really detail and complete a realistic skull even better than this, but I'm sure this is doodling to him.
@navitos exactly the old masters especially Carvaggio smuged. i know about cross hatching. that it helps to stregnthen skill but still not smudging is like not breathing
heh ive heard that from alot of art teachers, they are idiots, even the old masters smuged! there is one exception though and that is laurie lipton her technique is absolutly amazing!! all of her work is tiny little lines!!
lol sure as hell does. but i think your teacher meant not to smudge with your fingers, which does usually fuck up your drawing. still though that helljuice guy is 100% right do whatcha want
@fatasskrimson Ya dude i totally agree with navi, if you can use it do it... if you gotta darken out a whole section and then erase certain sections of that whole dark area for lighter shade do it. Use what your provided by your utencils and your one step closer to being unstoppable.
When beginners start drawing, they use smudging as a fall back and it can look really really bad if not used correctly. Most any art teacher worth their salt will tell you not to smudge and to just change pressure on the pencil instead. It is something that can look amazingly good if done perfectly, but otherwise will end up looking like shit. Try not to be disrespectful to your teacher and be thankful she passed on her knowledge to you.
@fatasskrimson lol ya man i know what u mean our high school art teacher used to say a similar thing. but one of the best ways to blend is to smudge. :)

@fatasskrimson that was a charcoal pencil, those are meant to smudge, smudging with a regular graphite pencil looks pretty bad,
