He's reliving his ancestor's memories. Like he transformed into them while their ancestor still being in control, it's fairly weird to explain sorry. It's like both of them are there. That's why you can get a 100% sync or only 50% on some missions. You can do it like your ancestors did, or take an easier way out for only completion of mission versus overall completion of game.
