  • what amp used here? i like the mid tones

  • Great vid man,, hahhhaa.. cheers!

  • What a Bodge Job !

  • given to fly :D

  • hey rob my next guitar will be a vintage v52 reissued and i'm planning to change its pickups for some fender ones... would you reccomend the vintage or to get with something higher?

  • ST ANGEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hey what amp/effects were used?

  • St. Anger! :D

  • Given To Fly !

  • 4:17 10am Automatic by The Black Keys, cracking track!

  • those brass saddle type bridges have been "hit hard" by the likes of jimmy page and jeff beck so I don't think it's the design so much as that particular manufacturer.Should have looked into callaham or glendale, they make a real good tele bridge.

  • Ah, the Black Keys. Noice!

  • Kill Em' All <3

  • Sorry, but I don't think that bridge would be considered an "upgrade". The original has those killer brass saddles which really bring out the tone more then those chrome ones. Plus he totally killed the vintage character of that Tele with that new bridge. Looks horrible...in my opinion. Anyway looks like you guys were having a blast making the video. That's all that really matters!

  • Very cool and entertaining video!

How does the neck feel? Is it fat? I don't like skinny necks. Hopefully you'll go on doing such cool videos!

  • Too patronsing!

  • This dude speaks like finnish people talk english

  • great given to fly!

  • god damn that bajastardised tele sounds, as they say, shit hot. Mmm teles...

  • Great guitar, recently got one myself. Mine is blonde with a black guard though.

How much does the bridge alter the TONE? I get how a bridge like the one installed would help with improving intonation and keeping the strings in place (which is an issue I have myself), but I like how it sounds and would like to keep as much of that as possible. It's sometimes difficult to tell via Youtube videos.

  • pearl jam!

  • the original bridge is ten times better.

  • Only if you have one that works properly! Mine didn't work for me, so I changed it to something that works better for me. Each to his own - thankfully we are all different. Love Peace Respect and Hope.

  • Hey Terry, Great DIY job. I was thinking about purchasing one of these tele's as the play great but like yourself I am none too keen on that ashtray bridge. Would it be possible to send me some information on how you changed out the bridge and the hardware involved

    Thanks In Advance

    Liam

  • not true

  • Hi, I wonder if the color of your guitar corresponds to the low Ds which is currently sold? thanks!

  • i really like the bajo sexto. only becuz of the sexy name lolz

  • the original bridge is better if you can get the action and intonation set right. I can do it and I am 16 years old. It is also integral to the tone.

  • This looks like a nifty mod and I wouldn't mind doing the same to mine. There were 2 things I noticed, though. Firstly that the bridge P/U is set really low, which is OK if you want a darker tone, but isn't there a problem with volume disparity with the neck P/U? The tone of the neck P/U definately shouldn't be darkened, ie set lower. Also I wondered about intonation. It looks like the string length has increased compared to mine, although it's difficult to be certain based on these images.

  • It's the other way round; lowering the pups will get a more jangly bright sound, while raising them will lose highs but increase mids.

Most tele lovers will scoff at the saddle replacement though. The 3-barrel brass is the only way to get those classic tele tones. The ones he has here are very metalic and thin by comparison. he would have been much better off to simply file slots in his old brass saddles.

  • Scoff if you like -it certainly plays a damn lot better now! I agree with premise 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' But for me the 3-barrel brass saddle didnt work -soooo!

Love Peace respect and Hope to you.

  • Shit yeah! No better way to open a video than with some Good ol' classic Pearl Jammage.

  • If I had enough money to buy one (which at the moment I don't) it would be difficult to choose which colour to have! I love this desert sand finish but I like the other one too.

  • Save that money dude... My Granma left me some money and I bought one, the Blonde with the black pickguard. It plays awsome and just feels great. Mine has now been named phyliss Maud....

  • lol at Action! at the begining =]

  • This is a Fender Baja, it does have an S switch. Read the info box where it says this one was "customized", he changed the bridge to a six saddle.

  • by the way, have a nice tone i have the blondie version with black pickguard, il love the 4th position whit 2 pickups in series!

  • i think he changed it.. the bride.

  • turn the gain down! this is not the best tone in the world.

  • it gives it uniqueness other wise it sounds like all other bluesy sounds

  • That's a very fetching Rasputin look you're sporting there Mr Chappers.

  • ahh, Given to fly !

  • Oh yes from the amazing Pearl jam.

A favourite of mine. Lovely tune and great lyrics.

    Cheers.

  • and it came with a realy nice deluxe gig bag, made by gnomes... in mexico . lol. priceless

  • beware the gnomes -you mustn't upset them -they bite!!

  • what's sort of brige it is ?

  • A standard Fender hardtail -cost about 40pounds.

    Cheers.

    Poppa.

  • my english is not very good, can you tell me what was the problem with the normal bridge?, and what else you changed in the guitar? i see no s1 switch

  • Hi, the problem with the original bridge with t saddles was the top 2 strings E +B kept slipping and therefore going out of tune.

There is the S1 switch, Chappers refers to it as the magic switch in early part of video.

    Love Peace Respect and Hope.

    Poppa.

  • yea...i was not paying attention when he showed the switch...so its just a baja with a six saddle bridge?

My baja got the stock bridge and i havent noticed any slippin, could you tell me what size strings you were using and how much the strings slipped???

  • I'm sure there are loads of baja players who hav'nt had any problems; but for me it seemed to happen every practice session and at gigs, so it was important to do something about it. I use 10's in standard tuning most of the time. If you have no problems just enjoy playing. All the best.

  • I have this guitar :) bargain

  • It's a good geetawr!

  • That's one cool video, funny guy that poppa shep!

  • Glad you enjoyed it, had great fun doing it.

Love Peace and Respect to you for 2009.

  • I think I'm going for a trip to the UK, buy some Orange Amps and get a private lesson from you. Awesome video

  • Wow, you would be very welcome! :-)

  • @dmtec buy me one while your there pal. cheers

  • Rock on dude!

  • aswome nice guitar

  • AHH, The Black Keys are Awesome!

  • Thanks for the reply! :)

I think you described it really well. Right around 150 bpm 16th notes I start to go into that twitch mode. I look forward to seeing that video!

  • Thanks for the vid Rob and Terry, I have had the same issue with my 52 Tele knocking out of tune when playing due to the standard T saddle. I am now busy searching the net for a new 6-Saddle Chrome / brass Bridge. I never even thought of changing the saddle after playing with the Tele all these years.

  • Looks like a cool guitar!

If you don't mind answering I have a question regarding right hand technique and the speed picking lessons. I noticed in my own playing that I pick using my wrist, but when I get to really fast/tremolo stuff I switch to my elbow. Are there any exercises or things I can do to try and get habit of picking just with finger movements and wrist movements and get that up to speed? Also, how do I tell when to pick from the wrist and when from the thumb and index.

    Thanks

  • Sorry mate, I think you emailed me this question and I never got around to answering it... busy monkey! :-)

Basically it sounds as if your current speed picking technique is based upon you trying to tense your arm to try an get a muscle twitch which will "Auto pilot" pick really fast. You need the opposite, a controlled, slow, precise movement. Speed is an illusion and the by product of economical movement, the less you move the faster you appear. I will do a video on this very soon :-)

  • "It has two!" - LOL!

  • Awh rob, it seems like you have such a laugh with all your students! its great to see!

  • yeah my students are like my extended family, most of them never leave...even when I tell them they can go off and practice what they have they keep coming ha ha..

  • I have the same guitar, in the same colour and think it's great, I haven't had trouble with it staying in tune, only problem is that I think that the intonation of one string is slightly off yet the string that shares the same barrel seems OK.

I just wish I had the same tutor, my playing is dire.

  • Hey Rob, if he's been playing for longer than you, why is he your student?

  • I'm a slow learner!! Remember the tortoise and the hare story!

  • I don't know about that. You seem like a pretty excellent guitarist, I have to say.

  • he saw hendrix play

what a complete and utter bastard

  • Ha ha I know...

  • You beat me to it with these sentiments

  • Sweeeeeeeet! Ive got a Tele to paint up after finishing your Rob. Had a little play when it arrived and they are real nice i have to say. Wasnt a fan of the lacquered fretboard at first glance but was quite surprised at how it felt under the old fingers :)

  • cheers rob, that was fun!

  • My pleasure mate :-)

  • nice...

  • wow kinda heavy on distortion for blues pickin

  • Those maple neck teles have great tone. I have an American (String through) tele that I did the same mod with. The Mexican bridge is superior in all ways. The string tension reduction/tonal increase is amazing. I also tossed out the Lace pickups for something better.

  • Boy, he is a hard hitter, ain't he? =P . Tasty playing nonetheless.

  • Never too old to take lessons. :D

  • i was born in ensenada!!!!!!!!!!! for those who dont know ensenada baja california is the place were all the mexican fender guitars are fabricated

  • the black keys is truly a great band

  • Now that's a normal guitar for all you guys requesting one. Oh wait! :)

Honestly i really like the tone in the video. What amp did he use?

  • Thanks mate, It was a Roland Cube 60, my amp is being worked on :-)

  • Win transplant?

  • Those cubes are honestly amazing! Not gig material though and who would want an amp named Cube when there are Tiny Terrors and Rockerverbs! ;)

Maybe it's the compressed sound from youtube but i was honestly thinking it was a lot more expansive. Kudos to the sound setup!

  • those are so much better than spider amps

  • Beautiful Guitar, nice work :P

  • very nice! :)
