why do people want to still learn cantonese? Mandarin is "chinese". if people start learning cantonese theyre going to be way behind the times when China and BEIJING are the world leaders. so...learn chinese, not this thing

Catonese is older than Mandarin and is one of the 5 major dialects. So, actually Cantonese is spoken more. Mandarin has only been around for a little over 700 years and Cantonese has been around over 2000 years. Most people in Hong Kong know both Cantonese and Mandarin. Although Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997, it is still the cultural capital.

learning Cantonese is much harder than lerning Japanese or Korean.

It depends what your first language is and what other languages you speak. If you speak Mandarin it won't be such a challenge to learn Cantonese. It's also far easier for Asian speakers of Japanese or Korean to learn Cantonese than for them to learn English because there are so much of their vocabulary was borrowed from Chinese. So, obviously Cantonese should be made a lingua franca in Asia.

Spanish is my 2nd language and because of that, Learning Japanese was a piece of cake (due to all of the pronounciation), Korean ended up being in my head because I watch tons of K-Drama. knowing 5 languages makes job opportunities endless. though I expect my little sister to surpass me ( she's only 10 and knows 3 languages)
