how do i know if i need to adjust the high or the low screw? is the high to be adjusted with the throttle wide open and low to be set at mid throttle and idle at idle? just curious what the difference is and where to start? im not real knowledgable about small engines.
I don't understand all those who say "throw it into trashcan". If you bought this saw, and paid 3 times less then for Stihl or Husqarna, you can't expect the same quality. But anyway, this is a good saw, even excellent for it's price (I paid around $300). One bad thing only: it comes with some default Oregon chain which is micro chisel and really slow. Replace it with some stronger chain, and then the saw cuts excellent. I used it for few months and didn't have one single problem.
Nice video very helpful info, start off adjusting the H screw first for high speed performance, then adjust the L screw to get the idle smooth. Go back and readjust both screws to get best performace as each screw,L & H has some effect on the other. Finally, set the idle speed screw to a speed that allows the clutch to disengage. Three big issues with these motors are worn carb parts especially the fuel pump and metering diaphrams, plugged mufflers which a lot of guys miss and fouled plugs. TM
My shop won't even work on Homelite/Ryobi products. Its a pain to get parts for them and the labor is almost as much as the original cost of the stupid things. Poulan saws a not much better but atleast its easy to get parts and they seem to last a little longer.
@Rarrin9378 That's what everyone says. Lower end Stihl chainsaws are made with just as much plastic as this homelite or Poulan chainsaw's. They also break down just as much. The two positive things about Stihl's lower end products is that there engines have more power and its easy to get parts for them. I've worked on just about every make of chainsaw even older Pioneer, Stihl and Homelite chainsaws. Newer saws are meant to be thrown out. Older saws were meant to be fixed and put to work.
my homelite weed trimmer worked twice before it shut down. they refused to honor the warranty that i was upsold when i purchased the thing brand new. brand new, worked twice. homelite is a den of thieves.
It's a shame that homelite saws went to cheap shitty quality by selling the company. The used to be one of the kings of chainsaws back in the 60s and 70s through the 80s. But your right all the carbs in the cheap saws today are a pain in the ass to tune the right way. Most of those saws that come in my shop get turned down for service. They just aren't worth working on.
Excellent video. Nice editing. Unfortunately for me, I had to purchase a carburetor adjustment tool for my homelite 46cc saw. The L-H adjustment on my saw requires a special tool instead of a simple screwdriver. Why do they have to complicate things? To justify some design engineer's job I suppose. Anyway, the video was most helpful. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Nicely made video, really helpful and reading other people's comment and you answering them helped me too. Is it "OK" that I put you on speed dial? I'll need you again!!

You sir are a genius. I have a Homelite String Trimmer and have been screwing around with it for months trying to get it to run properly. Last weekend I even took the carb apart.
I was never able to figure our why there were no adjustment screw other than those plastic caps. After watching your video and understanding that the screws were beneath the two pastic cover, my trimmer purrs like a kitten. THANK YOU!! I hope I can return the string trimmer I just purchased a few hours ago.
Gee I know how to fix that. ~grabs homelite chainsaw throws it into the dumpster after mumbling some choice swear words, goes out and buys a Stihl Farm Boss~ There ya go, all fixed now.
@lawnguy27 idle: that means the throttle shutter is slightly open by the idle speed regulating screw: the engine isn't fast so doen't need a lot of fuel .the fuel it needs is given by a little hole (a discharge port) who is located at the right of the the throttle shutter the side of the engine. turning idle ajustment screw to the left , makes more fuel in that discharge port. if it doesn't operate that means that something stops the fuel. like dirt.
truely a great model....except for the chain brake....broke after one use....and fried the clutch....i cut off the chain brake and i am now using that chainsaw for a motorized bicycle im building :)
hi! there, question pls!....we have the exact the same of chainsaw and mine have a problem....ill start the engine of chainsaw, and onece i press the throtle control the engine is always shot it down, what cause of this?
@donyboy73 i dont gave the carb tool so i took the carb off wrapped it in paper put it in my vise and took my hacksaw and made a slot in the middle of the screw so i can adjust my carb mine had the same prob revving real high and no idle runs mint now thanks man really helpful
