I just came by this when checking into the luthier process. This guy seems so fucking genuine, as sappish as it sounds his blatant love for crafting is heart-touching. I can only hope that whatever i do with my life brings the same feelings he talks of.
That really is funny, I'm sure a lot of people will dispute you on that statement. Of course I'm sure you are not a musician and probably don't know anything about guitars.
I have hiked the AT from Springer to Marion,Va. So far my favorite section is the south western part of Virginia. The people are so warm and friendly. God surely smiled upon the country side. Beautiful land. My ancestors came from Ireland , in 1792, to the mountains of Virginia , near Old Rag Mountain. Somehow we came to South Carolina. I love south western Virginia
I was born in Keen Mountain, a coal camp in Buchanon County near Grundy. My family was made up of coal miners for N&W and Pond Creek Coal companies. Listened to Flatt and Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe, and the Carter family. Played football at WVU after which my career brought me to California where I just retired. Still think the SW Virginia area is the most beautiful in the world. My best to all of Virginia and Virginians. And yes, I play the guitar.

Miss the mountains and trees and all the streams. Good to hear from someone back home.
I was born in Keen Mountain, Va, a coal camp that no longer exists and raised in the Appalachians in the Ky., Tenn., Va., area. Absolutely the most beautiful place on earth; played football at WVU after which my career took me to California where I just retired in Thousand Oaks. Sure do miss the green mountains and streams and the great people!
God Bless this man for sharing his great talent with us all. He is truly a nationall treasure. He may , or may not, be "ONE OF A KIND" with his talent and sense of humor-- but if he isn't one of a kind he is certainly "ONE OF JUST VERY, VERY FEW" :-)
Nice pickin and nice guitar you built. I've built two so far. A dreadnought and an OM style. I don't ever see myself not building guitars. I been bit by the bug. Anyway, thanks for shaing Wayne and if you get a chance, come on over to the Official Luthiers Forum (OLF) and share some of you work.
im glad im not the only one who heard a faint bit of forest in his voice. lol i played a carnegie hall and it was a hi light. but seriously beautiful instruments this guy builds.
HA HA HA, yes! he really really does! "Banjoew" But, I expect he makes a mint. I'd probably talk like that if i made that much money. Perhaps thats what happens?
He charges bugger all for his guitars - seriously! They resell for ridiculous amounts, however. The only reason that many people don't have one is that his waiting list is very long and you usually have to know him personally to get one. Great guy, great luthier.
Being from southwest VA myself, I can tell you that what you see with a guy like Wayne is what you get. Truly the salt of the Earth - the types of people we need a whole lot more of.
Plus he is an amazing picker and even better luthier!
I travelled from Austalia recently and was lucky enough to meet Wayne at Whitetop VA, and got invited back to is place to see the shop. Never even heard of him before!! What a great bloke, and man, can he make 'em & play 'em. BTW, everyone we met in that region was extremly friendly and opened up there lives to us.
COOL!

Wayne Henderson is probably the best luthier in the U.S. I wish I had a henderson.

Forest Gump was Super talented....
but he's a fictional character so there really no reason why the 2 should be compared.

He just speaks in the local Virginian drawl. Interestingly other musicians from the area spoke more "generic" English.

Wayne is the man. One of a kind. A good friend to a lot of people. The book just scratches the surface of the real person.
I have not met anybody nicer or a more genuine American. This video gives you a glimpse of who he is.
If I could make a lists of people you need to meet before you move to the great beyond. Wayne would be is in the Top 10.
