the only thing i can say is that he should try not using axis's for a little bit. I know they are amazing pedals, but the way I developed my stamina and feel in my legs was by using a stiff set of 20 year old dixon double pedals. The thing about axis is that there isnt much weight to them, so you lifting your whole leg, and dropping your whole leg. He should try out some pedals like Pearl eliminators or Iron Cobras for a bit.
