I think people should calm down a little bit - we need to look to the future while not forgetting the past. Still, we need to remember that revenge would lower ourselves to the level of the British and the French, so instead, we must continue the course of economic development and beat them without ever firing a shot. Oh, and work harder to make the British Museum and Louvre return national treasures taken from the Old Summer Palace.
The irony of the Old Summer Palace is that a good portion of it was built along European Baroque lines, with input from European (mostly Italian) architects. Odd how the Qing wanted to copy "barbarian" palace architecture. Hence the preponderance of stone at the site--traditional Chinese buildings are almost all made of wood. If not for European architects, the stone ruins you see today would not be there. History is funny how it works sometimes.
Yeah, we see the stone remains because they didn't turn into ashes, unlike the Chinese part (which was very large) built from wood which had been completely razed by the fire. And even if there were no European architecture, the Chinese-style canals and bridges (made from stone) would still be present.
Don't see how the point can even be debated. France and England went to China and insisted that it must trade with them? Why should China be obligated to do that? and that it must allow drugs to be peddled in its country because they insist? Failing which UK and France invades, kills its citizens and loots. The protagonists are not even border states where disputes can be expected. The French/British traveled a long way to find trouble with a peaceful China that just wanted to be left alone

If they want to stop pouring salt into old wounds, they should reconsider that. Or should the Chinese make them into debt slaves in order to have them change their minds?
No matter how the British and French tried to spin their version of their story to show how civilized they were, the Chinese only know that they were the barbarians who pushed dope to the Chinese people.

I think people who are the Chinese should watch this film. Although this had been the history , invaders souldn't forget what they had done. They burn the most beautiful building in 1800s. It's very unbelievable.
snorfinn, someone kick you in the face, if you hit back, he will be inocent? and you will be also a barbarian? your barstard logic just prove you are stupid and mentally retarded.

I think the chinese had the right kill the British and French invaders, they were over there illegaly. so, why don't you just shut up snorfinn, you are just one stupide son of bitch justifying these shit invisions by your bastard salop ancestors.
Sir, you are wrong. I know snorfinn was a little over-reacting, but unlike what you think, colonism was strong at that time. They sold opium and getting land and money everywhere. They have done a lot of bad things which we probably cannot feel but those are obiously written in the history of other countries(not only China but also other countries). Cololism obviously helped europe becoming the richest place, and of course you feel different from ppl there and maybe learned differerntly too
All Chinese people seem to know about this "humiliation", but none of them seem to care about WHY the invaders decided to burn it. If China had not tortured and executed prisoners of war (also a big "humiliation"), Yuanming Yuan would still be standing today. YES, Europeans had no right to invade China, but please forget about your nationalism for a second and try to learn all aspects of this tragedy before you start your your racist tirades.
I am not justifying "barbarism". The only reason you could describe the burning of Yuanmingyuan as unprovoked and unilateral barbarism is if you are ignorant of the fact that it was carried out in retribution of the Chinese torture and murder of 20 Westerners sent to negotiate with the Chinese under a flag of truce, an act more "barbaric" than burning down a palace if you ask me. Chinese people don't learn about THAT in school, which is why they talk about "humiliation".
Well you are actually justifying barbarism by simply defending this act! One of the only positive legacies that the human race leaves on this earth is its priceless heritage in art and architecture. This act flys in the face of civilized practice. In retribution for the acts of the "uncivilized chinamen" the british and french acted ; yes, you guessed it; like uncivilised animals!
Again, I am NOT defending it, I am merely pointing out that there were TWO acts of barbarism here, not just one. Most Chinese people fully believe that the sacking was entirely unprovoked because their government has been feeding them a politicized account of the events that conveniently skips the part about the torture and murders the Chinese committed (the direct cause for the destruction of the palace) and then goes on about how the Westerners were "barbaric". It's a deceitful account.
You want us CHINESE PEOPLE think why Europeans committed a crime in China?Sorry ,I can't undertand why ,because I can't undertand your uncivilized culture.
SuperQQ11: I had to wait until I left China to reply to you since YouTube is blocked there. (Apparently your "civilized" country can't handle such "barbaric" things as freedom of speech.) Anyway, the real reason why you can't understand why the Europeans did this is because you are ignorant. Chinese kids probably don't learn about this in school, but the fact is that the Europeans sent three dozen men to negotiate with the Chinese under a flag of truce.
What we learned in school was 己所不欲,勿施于人DO NOT TO DO OTHERS WAHT YOU DONT WANT TO BE DONE TO YOU!We have mature standard of behavior and ethics,so we know what we is right or not and we have the courage to be responsible for consequence if we do something wrong. Not quibble because of someone have the same behavior before so what you have done is right!!That is gangster logic!!!
Did I say it was right? No, I didn't. I explicitly said it was WRONG. Several times. Please learn to read. Was it right of the Chinese to torture and murder those prisoners? No, that was wrong too. Or perhaps you disagree? In any case, again all I am asking here is that you fucking acknowledge the actual chain of events and not try to make it seem as if the sacking of Yuanmingyuan was entirely unprovoked.
As we can see you are a good sample of barbarian, chinese people never ask for repayment for what the Europeans has done to us,even we never blame of their sin,we just exposit the history what had happened in China.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They were all tortured by the Chinese, and 20 of them were killed after being tortured so bad that their bodies could barely be recognized. That's why the Europeans decided to sack Yuanmingyuan. It was intended as punishment for these murders. Again, I am not saying the Europeans were innocent, they certainly were not, but don't pretend that the Chinese weren't guilty of barbaric acts themselves and that the burning of Yuanmingyuan was entirely unprovoked.
chinese immense culture can't be understood by the other historyless country forever; chinese origion is almost equal to the whole human history, when some foreigner is to accuse china, just look at your poor country first, what it have?
"chinese origin is almost equal to the whole human history, when some foreigner is to accuse china, just look at your poor country first, what it have?"
If China were "almost equal to the whole of human history" we would not have computers, the Internet, electricity, cars, trains, telephones, planes, sattelites, clocks, nuclear power, radio, TV, video, antibiotics, capitalism, communism, liberalism, etc, etc.
The guy you dissed is from Hong Kong! Don't blame Taiwanese. Get your facts straight. Do look at kingrichard91's comment. This guy is from Taiwan! Now who's more educated?
i hope china rebuilds the desecrated palace in the future when they get prosperous!!! i really want to see how it looks like in there w/ the eastern and western architecture.
They are not going to do it. They are going to keep it like this to teach future generations the consequences of being invaded or dominated by foreigners...
I'm UK born & after seeing Yaun Ming Yuan 4 the 1st time in my life I felt regret being British. We destroyed the eighth wonder of the world not because we needed to, just because we could. How far have we fallen? We can't even build an air port terminal in UK that works after 20yrs trying, Beijing built theirs with Lord Foster in just 4yrs, the largest building in the world. Now every thing in my home in OZ is made in China, even the wife.
It was nothing to do with just because we could, it was in revenge for the torture and murder of diplomats sent to negotiate a peace and their escorts. A note was left on the gates informing them excatly why it was done. I state this to correct your post, i do not condone what happend to the gardens and from articles i have read the troops and intellectuals were not to happy about doing it either. You regret being British and clearly have an issue with the place, good riddance.
Dear sepiasilence, not quite fair because why did we have to be there trying to "make Peace" in the 1st place. The Chinese did NOT invade England and demand we do business with them or we would sail their navel ships into our harbors and bombard their cities. We did that to them. We started the opium wars and grabbed Hong Kong. I don't regret being British but I do apologize for the things we did in the Empire's name, & not just in China, we were bastards to all equally.
RESPECT, if the rest of the people in the world would think the way you do, their will be much less arguments among the countries. Greetings from China.
Well, China did get back Hong Kong from England. I think that it's a start of a new relation between the two countries. France on the other hand...anybody have any comment(s)?
I still feel pain when I am watching this.Meanwhile I think the ruins themselves could better serve as a reminder for all Chinese presenting how importent it is to be a strong power in this world where nothing but power really matters.I hate it to say like this though but we've learned our lesson.
I don't feel hatred,I only mourn for the beauty lost. What was done was awful.I believe if they truly believe in justice and what they believe is right that they would return the things they robbed us of some many years ago.
To remember humiliation is not to revenge, but is to understand how important is being strong. We will protect the ruins forever, and the sleeping dragon is awake now.
every time when some foreigners say there is no human rights in china, I remember what they did to us before. Where did their human rights go at that time. Return those treasure they robbed and stole away from China.
I think what's more important is to learn the lesson that we should spend more efforts on protecting the historic heritage. During wenge(culture revolution) in China, there're probably more Chinese cultural heritage destroyed. Yuanmingyuan is indeed an extremely sad issue, but hatred can never solve the problem, all we have to know is not to let the cultural heritage be destroyed again, whether indirectly by foreigners or directly by ourselves. Just my personal humble opinions, no offense..peace
This movie is amazing!!! Thanks to these scientists and artists for making them shown so vividly again!!! I think it is meaningless to remember what people did this to us, but why we allowed them to do this and who gave them the chance to destroy this beautiful construction? There is nothing right or wrong, just rule of "the weak are the prey of the strong", the law of jungle, the human nature - greedy. In other words, I don't think China never invaded, robbed and destroyed others' homes.
Europeans and Americans never taught their children about their incredible deeds in China eh? And they think they have the right to criticize China about everything and anything.
dont be stupid, coming from a country whos web access is highly censored by the state, the youth only know foggy details of the tiananmen square incident if knowing of it at all and people so desperate they set themselves alight in the street, the list is endless, europe and america are far from perfect i admit, but neither is china
I got this movie too. I am thinking of uploading it to the youtube for broader coverage. It is really nice. But the movie is 330M. Does anyone know how to break the movie into smaller part < 100M?
good luck, they have been dead for quite a while now kid, can i punc you becuase a chinese man punched my great great great grandfather? Europes imperial past is over, if any world power invaded another nuclear weapons would just start flying, this is why conflicts happen in weak countries as battlefields with world powers funding them and pumping troops in, nobody will pay twice for anything, grow up
I think people should calm down a little bit - we need to look to the future while not forgetting the past.

Peace to everybody.

I think the garden & park should be restored though. Just the pools, lake & bridges, but not the buildings. It would be beautiful.

And they think they have the right to criticize China about everything and anything.

dont be stupid, coming from a country whos web access is highly censored by the state, the youth only know foggy details of the tiananmen square incident if knowing of it at all and people so desperate they set themselves alight in the street, the list is endless, europe and america are far from perfect i admit, but neither is china

never forget what they did to US!
fbfamous 5 years ago
I think the Europeans still remember what they did to us.
That's why they bark of 'China threat' all the time.
We Chinese don't have any reason to forget what happened.
fkeuropean 5 years ago 2
and what is your reason for blaming us still? more hate in the world? what a logical and typical chinese statement ;)

my opinion locates on it was not only western invaders's fault, china was too weak at that time. But it will never be again; )

good luck, they have been dead for quite a while now kid, can i punc you becuase a chinese man punched my great great great grandfather? Europes imperial past is over, if any world power invaded another nuclear weapons would just start flying, this is why conflicts happen in weak countries as battlefields with world powers funding them and pumping troops in, nobody will pay twice for anything, grow up
