I live 70 miles from there. Heard the explosion. Or more like felt it, wasn't so much of an audible boom here, but the the windows rattled a little in my house. There was a guy on I-20 right in front of the refinery when it went off. Luckily, or by design, I-20 goes through a cut right there. Still, it blew all the glass out of his car. I've heard most of the force went upwards and towards the north, {Big Spring being south-southwest} otherwise it could have been a helluva lot worse.
i always wondered working in the refineries myself they want us clean shaved to be able to fit on a resperator, But we dont get issued a respirator , and if there is an explosion like this where hazardous gases are present i would think every employee should be scba trained and issued a fresh air mask for emergency purposes!!! a regular half faced will get spent quick and will have no protection from the h2s,and other deadly gases!!!!

I'm a volunteer fire fighter in howard county and I was on the second engine that went in there it was pretty scary knowing that we could have died at anytime. The refinery told us that it would take us three days to put everything out but this is what we train for.

Besides, the refinery should have implemented the recommended safety precautions. If they had, this wouldn't have happened. However, the average refinery employee has an 11th grade education, so what do you expect?

I now live in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area. However, I grew up in Big Spring. This is not the first time the refinery exploded. I remember back in late February 1993, it caught fire as well.
My husband is a tank hauler, and we just Thank God, that the Angels were watching after all the employees and truckers there at the time. Thank You , Jesus.
