@austinscreations im guessing it will. i don't own a mac pro and a thunderbolt display, but if your mac pro has a mini display port, and if the thunderbolt display also has one, then im pretty sure that you can connect it to this. personally, i would recommend a monitor other than this one cause it'll save u hundreds of dollars, that's if your only gonna use it for your mac pro.
@DenSjoveDansker Yes you can :) thats what most people do... the thunderbolt display functions as an extionsion of your macbook. it includes some of the same ports and when you want to go portable you just unplug the display cable :)
@DenSjoveDansker You can still use the mini display cable.... thunderbolt and mini display are basically the same thing. You can use mini display cable from mac to display with the 27 inch or the 24 inch... your choice :)
The Thunderbolt display isn't that expensive in comparison to other Macs. A 27 inch iMac costs $1,699. You could Buy a Mac Mini and a Thunderbolt display for less than a iMac. It is geared towards professionals as are high end Macs.
Hey, i am going to start Electronic music and i will need to connect all my gear up, i listened and this could be it :) i could leave all my gear connected to the thunderbolt display and i can just take TWO cables out and go on vacation or facetime with my friends. Good Video bro!
Apple should make a 21.5" Cinema Display.. Can't afford or justify investing on a 27" Monitor, and to be honest having downgraded from a 24" to a 21.5" I prefer the smaller size and better pixel density over a 24" with 1080P resolution..

Question - can I run Safari in full screen on one display (for example) and use the other display for something else? (like running another app or using Finder).
I work on a pc hooked to a 42inch hdtv and you say it looks "stretched". Not sure what kind of computer u got but it doesn't look stretched at all on mine.
Does anyone know if you can set up the macbook so that when you close it, it doesn't go into stand by mode? I'm looking to do a setup similar to this, but while at home, I want to close the macbook and put it out of the way.
yes, but only the 21 inch one.. and this display is 27ich with thunderbolt technology.. the "cheap" imac with 27inch costs like 1600EUR, i think its 2100 US Dollars, uhm, i have the apple cinema display too with a macbookpro 13 inch.. so, i'm lucky.. lol
Even with six different desktops open at once, and several different external drives plugged in, this tiny MacBook is loading everything instantly. . . . Apple rocks, face it.
@4nc3st0r Except that every Windows OS to date is a virtual 500 pound barbell, and in time, every computer running Windows has to either be wiped free of debilitating viruses, or scrapped.
I'm just saying, Apple has done something right. I don't hate Microsoft, but they just don't do what Apple does.
@Prence I lol'd. I lol at the fact that you spend 1000 dollars for the brand name "Mac" "Apple", etc. and support slave labor. I can build a PC for the price of a Mac and use it as a business level server. I lol at the fact that if you max out a Mac, it will eventually reach 18 thousand dollars. Yeah. I don't quite remember 16 gigabytes of ram being 400 dollars. Have fun on your Shatbook Pro or whatever you use.
@BradtheCrazy I lol'd at the fact you wrongly assumed I own a macbook, FYI, this is a winblows pc that I'm typing away on, and the only apple product that I own is the ipod touch 4g, and you can say that all apple products are way over priced, but there isn't another mp3 player that can touch the ipod touch in ease of use and versatility. And I know you can build a better computer for 1/3 the cost of any mac, I know because I built this one for just over $800.
@BradtheCrazy No, I criticized not the company, but the substandard product it released, Vista ring a bell. And you criticize Apple in the same breath that you hold Microsoft in such high regard. Both companies are just about honor less when it comes to business practices. So please take a step back and reevaluate your view on who is better in the computer world. Because when the lights are turned on, both Microsoft and Apple hide what they don't want you to see.
@BradtheCrazy the apple laptops are so fast and high performanced. I have windows laptop and it is low performanced ans its new! nothing can compare apple products.
Cool but should cost about $500 not $1,000. You fanboys are going to hate me but, it is just one of the many things Apple charges too much for. I still feel guilty about spending $2,300 on my 15 inch MBP with the high res antiglare, SSD, and upgrading the ram myself :( It is the best computer I have ever owned though :)
I have a i7 macbook air. I didin't know the integrated graphics could output that resolution. The fans kick up on the laptop when I play HD youtube videos. Do the fans kick up or the laptop overheat with that setup?
Nice set up! $1000 bucks is still too steep for me. I'd rather use that money towards an iMac which will end up running much better than my Macbook Pro. So my advice would be to spend $1700 on a 27 in. iMac rather than spending $1000 on a display that is only as good as your laptop.
@bryno92 my advice is to get an dell u2711 much cheaper but with the same ips-panel. and the get an pc with better hardware for only like £500. And if you would somehow think osx are better than windows you get ubuntu for free and then a flashy mac skin for it. there i just saved you guy £1000 and you'll get a better computer for money!
@aleksandersandstrom I was talking to the people who had a Macbook and were looking to buy this "display". Obviously if you want to save money, you should buy a PC. I personally, can't stand PC's. I remember when I used to use Windows, I'd have a lot of problems. Now I've been using a Mac for the past 4-5 years and I don't see myself going back to PC. Never tried Ubuntu though. But yeah, what you said is a much better way to save money for people who aren't die hard mac fanboys like myself haha.
@yopeople70 Looks like he is using the same mouse as I do, the Logitech Performance MX - I use it as a gaming mouse, and I will say its as good as a wired one for it. Just need to make sure there is a good rechargeable for it... Very comfortable mouse to use.
@rxbartolo It's not just a monitor so it depends on your need. It's also a facetime camera, speakers, usb port, firewire800 port and ethernet port. Several of those features the MBA do not have...so if you need the portability on the road and the functionality at the office there is nothing that compares...it's a great monitor.
@rxbartolo Hi, tomorrow I thought the same as you, but the Thunderbolt display has an HD webcam (a normal one costs about 100 euros), it has a microphone (30 euros), amazing quality (I don't know if samsung ones can get this huge quality). It's also a Thunderbolt display, it has 3 USB connectors and it has a beautiful design. But I think that this product would ship a lot better at 600 dollars more or less.
@FreeForAllGamerz Does your 2004 laptop have a 2nd generation sandy bridge chip? LOL, no it doesn't... not even intel core 2 duo was out in 2004.. do your research.
@fetsen1 Check out the Apple LED Cinema Display 27", its the same monitor, but with different connections. It has mini DisplaylPort, so you need a video card with that, or a mini DP - DVI converter.
I love this display a LOT! the only reason still didnt get it is because coping with enormous frustration that this monitor is lacking backward connectivity with previous generation macs Thunderbolt is new amazing technology and surely will set new standard for the PC speed etc i simply share frustration of many potential buyers shocked by apple's decision to "cut off" from previous video connection standards i think for the money it is amazing monitor just wish i didnt have to look elsewhere
The thing that made me get the dell u3011 over this display is the high gloss.
It's just makes for way too much glare with my setup (window at my back). That said, for anyone who's in front of their computer a lot, and especially if you do video/photo editing/3d modeling/animation/2d painting or programming for that matter, a good IPS display is about the best investment you can make. That and an awesome chair.
All the info you provided about screen arrangement and setting primary screen and spanning is 10 years old. nothing new there at all from previous mac os x generations or displays.
Hello there! I was wondering , how fast does this Thunderbolt Display perform connected to the new 2011 i5 processor macbook air 11.6 inch ? There is a decision for me to make and the only thing that stops me from buying such a setup is the performance question. Like, how good will this setup run photo editor or surfing internet or watching HD films and such things. Could there be any hard lags or something like it ? taking in account "air" performance.
Great Review John, quick question, i want to get a lacie 1TB Thunderbolt, i am not really going to use it on the locations to capture and edit footage
So my other option would be to get a Thunderbolt Display and will this mean can i get Thunderbolt Speeds from the Display without buying the Lacie 1TB ?
I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! I hate Apple! @fetsen1 Check out the Apple LED Cinema Display 27", its the same monitor, but with different connections. It has mini DisplaylPort, so you need a video card with that, or a mini DP - DVI converter.

Nice review. Well done. Do you know if the MBA will support more than 1 external monitor with this high resolution via Thunderbolt?

Imadhatterr 4 months ago
@AlexFoShizzle no. It is only a display with a camera and microphone. It also acts as a central place to charge/keep organized.

Can you just buy the thunderbolt display as a computer? D you have to have a MacBook air? Please someone explain :/

15inch is so small to edit with...
