@soleeforu according to ron paul we only get 10% of our oil from foreighn countries, even then we put tarrifs on and tax our own imports lol. he wants to release our dependance on this 10% and instead open up the free markets in such a way that people are entitled to use whatever they invent for energy saving technology. he is also willing to pay people a kind of tax dividend for the ammount of energy saved. so right now im thinking, screw oil.

Economic protectionism is a precursor to war. It's what the Nazis did before WWII. Hitler was obsessed with making Germany 100% self-sufficient.
On the other hand, trade is a precursor to lasting peace. Once you have an economic interest in another country, you have less of an incentive to go to war/more of an incentive to prevent war. Exposure to other cultures also teaches you how similar the different branches of the human family are and makes it harder to dehumanize foreigners.
