Spaying and neutering is simply the right thing to do. Over the millennia, we humans have domesticated dogs and cats to the point that they depend on us. So as far as nature goes, it is our responsibility to help control their population.

Yes, it broke my heart taking away my cat's ability to give birth, but the uncertain fate of a half dozen beautiful kittens would grieve me much more!

Don't tamper with nature? We tamper with nature by keeping domesticated animals. Not spaying a cat increases thier risk for mamary and uterus cancer, more so than neuter increases the risk of prostate cancer for males.

PeTA themselves are the exact source; they believe in COMPLETE Animal Liberation, which means (among other various things), no animals as pets. Also, PeTA's president Ingrid Newkirk has said herself that she supports breed specific legislation (banning of dogs) for all breeds because it is supposedly 'cruel to keep them as pets, guide or assistant animals'.
