I ALWAYS KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHIN' SCREWY WITH ADMIRAL TOLYEN!! THE BASTARD!! IN THE BEGINING BOOKS HE WAS HAILED AS A HERO AGAINST THE KILRATHI & IN THE BATTLE OF TERRA. CRYING ASS SHAME!!! POPULARITY HAS MANY CASULTIES!!
The conspiracy story plot in this game is what is happening now. Tolwyn belongs to a cabal of fascist conspirators who represent the cabal in this country who start fake wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and now want a war with Iran. The black lance forces= the criminal corporate elite and the military industrial complex. They start fake wars to make money and gain control of the world's resources with deceit and out right violence.
Like Hitler, Tolwyn tried to clense the world of what he thought were the weak people (Jews) Like Hitler, he cheated his death sentence by cowardly taking his own life.
I think the biggest thing with this is the fact that it shows Tolwyns fall, how far he had gone from the death of the behemoth. For those who knew Tolwyn from the earlier parts of the story Tolwyn was a hero always putting himself on the line for humanitiy. However during the end of the war the Behemoth was detroyed, Hobbes turned, Angel died, and Bonderevsky was badly injured. Well it all took its toll on Tolwyn, its one of those endings thats bittersweet, knowing how good a man he was before.
Malcom McDowell was perfect for this role... he did such a good job. Of course he always does, even when he's in movies that sucks he always does good
WC3 and 4 are classics but prophecy was just... awful. I'll never consider it canon because I hated the ending THAT much.
@gregoryvn3 I just got it up and running again (both the CD and DVD versions...) not too hard if you follow the instructions at Wing Commander CIC's tech help pages. WC3 and 4 are easily in my top ten games ever, and an awful lot of recent sci-fi shows (B5, Space, nBSG, etc.) and movies owe them a fair bit, IMO!
I didn't really like WC4 all that much but the ending really brought it up. After three games and countless expansions of Tolwyn being a dick, finally you get to put the boot to his sorry ass. For me it was the single most exhilarating moment in the games.
This is some of the best acting in the history of acting... and... God, I LOVE this game! They just don't make 'em like they used to... I still remember dying to come home from elementary to just log in time to play this masterpiece of a game. Glad to still have it, and glad to see this again. Oh, and poor Tolwyn...
how evil Towlyn had become in a way i can see he was trying to help mankind but to kill his own people majourly wrong i feel. still such a great game owned it since 98 and still play it on the week ends one of the best games still i say
If I remember one game from my youth, it's Wing Commander IV. Beautiful, emonationally filled, starred with great actors, space opera. Days far back, I wished that there would be TV series based on Wing Commander. There's no other game I have played from start to end as many times as this.
This is only final scene of this great game. There's so much more to see in game.
@weedee77 There was a tv series of course, but it was animated, and wasn't (IMO) anywhere near as good as the live-action games... though the voice cast was good. I've started watching the remake of Battlestar Galactica for the first time last month, and it' (and Space: AaB) are obviously VERY inspired by the live WC games' look and tone (in fact, more so than the actual WC movie!).
did any1 else feel bad when tolywin died? i mean he was a great hero of the confederation- he particpated in many battles that helped defeat the kilrathi, and as a key figure in defending earth from destruction.
i personally consider him a tragic hero. he was a great warrior, but in the end his ambition overrode his sense of honor. i salute tolywin regardless. without him- earth woulda been destroyed
@csdude35 Well, the problem is, Tolwynn's plan wouldn't have worked. Sure, mankind would be in a warrior mindset, but every few years there would be a new war or coup and the resources of the Terrans would be so low that by the time of Prophecy, there would be nothing left to stand against the new threat.
have to see there has beening no other game to date that had such a impact the storyline the music everything about it still makes me want to keep playing it never will part with this game lol Go WC!!
I still have all the WC games. i refuse to part with them. In my honest opinion for me its almost as good as Battlestar Galactica.. in fact the original Wing Commander took inspiration from the 1978 BSG when you compare the pilot flightsuit..
Just a huge shame Roberts fraked up the film so epically..
It was a good series, but I honestly felt that by Prophecy it was beginning to outlive it's usefulness, and any sense of purpose. Though it was a shame they had to kill Blair off.
@jboweruk We never see Blair die... I like to think he was captured and was taken to the aliens' fleet on the other side of the gateway after Prophecy, to escape in an epic FPS spinoff game we never got. :(
@BanjoOz In the latest novel, Pilgrim Truth (unreleased until just a few days ago!) there is a statement near the end that touches whether he actually lived or died.
Well, I knw what it says, but to say so here would spoil it. Of course, you can read it for free at wcnews.
@BanjoOz There is only one Wing Commander universe, and the games, novels, the movie and the TV show all take place in it. If you want to be silly about it, you can say the games take precedence anywhere you might see a contradiction, but the fact remains that Chris Roberts wrote and directed the movie, so it's a part of the canon.
Not to be a dick, just the issue's been beaten to death over the years and it's an old tired thing to argue about.
@Uejji Huh? No need to be nasty about it, mate. This is the first I've ever heard about it all being "one universe"... surely the movie contradicts the games (Blair is a "Pilgrim", something that doesn't *exist* in the games, for one, and the novels of WC3 and 4 are VERY different in places aside from that). I'm not the one being 'silly' here. Still, sorry if I haven't been following fanboy debates and flamewars for the past ten years.
@Uejji If other folks react like you did here, I'd rather not, thanks. :( Like any fandom with an 'expanded universe' I'm sure people would like to fit as much into the same continuity as possible (look at the mess of Star Wars), but in the end it's all just fan opinion.
Yes, exactly that moment - and the sequence was so unpredictable at first and when you saw that all went well - it was, like you were really standing there... I barely experienced such a feeling with another game.
Watching this again, I was suddenly reminded of the much more recent game Bioshock, in terms of what an ending should and shouldn't do. I loved BS's final cutscene, but felt the silly bossfight was a big misstep in a game more about philosophy and character than blasting things. Something like WC4's ending might have actually been more fitting, IMO. I dunno...
It shows balls that they decided to make the final battle not some big "boss fight" but an ethical debate about the game we've just been playing. It shows the conviction they had telling this story and in their actors. Since WC2, the showdown between these two men was coming, and it's a wonderful, powerful note to end on. WC3 ends with the destruction of a whole world WC4 ends saving one.
@Exverlobter I own the DVD version... the old very early DVD drive I got (that died a year later!) came with it, and it was WELL worth it! I only wish there was a DVD version of WC3. :(
John Rhys Davies, yes. He was also in Sliders, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and a number of other movie and shows. He's an A- list actor, but we all love him.
@marcus10 It's McDowell's performance that convinces us he really believes this too (he's not a "villain" just because the story assigns him a black hat, but because of what he believes and does). He's right though in the whole "conflict breeds strength", but his actions are unethical. A very interesting character, and a wonderful moral point in a game that could easily sell as many copies by just having bad guys to shoot for no real reason. Superb.
If I were in Blairs place I would probably chosed the "ethical" side because in all games before Tolwyn was such an idiot towards him. But, if I would be a senator in that room, I would be in very hard dilemma. They are both right.
@marcus10 Agreed... I think it's good that they make Tolwyn himself really cause the vote to sway in the "good ending"; as a senator, you might have doubts who was right, until he starts praising the Kilrathi (who we've just been at terrible war with) and "if we perfect our methods of killing"... etc. I really love how he seems to snap at that point, with Paladin stepping forward. Wonderful McDowell performance in a great scene, equal to any "real movie" performance he's given.
And killing 90% of the population to "purify the stock" and make those that lived "better" ! I mean, when people found out about that, they would burn him at the bloody stake!
Tolwyn may be partially right, in that eternal vigilence is necessary, but how he went about it was abhorent. False flag operations to increase his powerbase etc and promote a full scale war...completely inexcusable. And for some weird reason this makes me think of world current events.
Yes. And the second step is killing the 90% by poverty. Or "extermination through work" or rather toil as the SS called it...thats what the "New World Order" is really about i bet. Getting rid of the 90% to let the rich rule the world and enjoy the fruits of technology and progress for which so many billions of humans fought through thousands of years. And now instead of sharing the untold riches they plan to let their slaves die after their job is done.
The recent remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still' had a similar message... That mankind must be brought to the brink of extinction before a great revolution can occur. The Wing Commander games were SO far ahead of their time!
The movie was an embarrassment. I'm ashamed to say I'm a WC fan because someone might think I was referring to the movie and not the game. They changed everything in the movie. I don't know what they were thinking. Chris Roberts must have been smoking crack.
I think the problem with that movie went deeper than the appearance of the Kilrathi. In fact, that was the least of the movie's problems. Even if they'd used state of the art CGI to render the Kilrathi, my opinion of the movie would be equally negative.
I agree....Why they didn't just use the cast from the games for the movie blows my mind..They went with some of the young-hot names of the time like Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matt Lillard. Sad, really.
I think he meant the in-flight graphics. I do agree, the game could use a facelift in that regard ... but the cinematics of WC4 are probably the best I've seen out of the Wing Commander series.
Mark Hamill is actually pretty good here, I think he's a better actor than people think when they judge him based on Star Wars: A New Hope. He's pretty good here.
I loved Wing Commander IV when I played it 10 years ago. It is The Godfather of games with live action cutscenes (I think it had about 4 hours worth of them). Wing Commander fans loved it but I think some criticized it for focusing too much on the cinematic aspects and not making the missions challenging/exciting enough. But Wing Commander III before it had slightly better gameplay (using the same game engine) and great cutscenes, it was a classic.
I only had the opportunity to play WC1 and WC4. Even for a victorious Blair ending, there are two variations to it which gives 2 different epilogue scenes of the victorious kind. I used to have the options written on paper for these two variations but have lost it since.
Oddly enough, my roommate was shocked when I chose the options, I saw the ALTERNATE ENDING when I first finished WCIV. I saw Blair become admiral. I can tell you where you make the choices if you want.
Thanks Tigerman1138 but I've given away my 6 CD's to someone and moreover I don't have an old computer to run it. I'll just have fond memories of the game which I played for hours trying every possible variation when it came to the choices.
It's hard to know what Tolwyn could be thinking as he sat in his cell. Perhaps he was inwardly cursing Blair and his allies for dooming humanity to an inevitable defeat in a future war or maybe he was reflecting on what went wrong throughout his life that brought him to this disgrace. He may have committed suicide when he realized the enormity of his crimes and couldn't handle the guilt or he could have wanted to deny his enemies the satisfaction of his execution with one last act of defiance.
Mentioning the bio-weapons is more effective in this interaction than unmarked fighters. I went with unmarked fighter option and lost the Assembly vote, then Blair got arrested as a traitor
Tolwyn is a tragic figure, he becomes so consumed by his need to 'prepare humanity' for the next great enemy, that he is willing to sacrifice the very things that make us all Human in the first place. I never really liked him, too much of a hard-liner, but he wasn't bad. Just strict. However in WC4, he just goes off the deep end, consumed by his own over-the-top need to keep Humanity ready.
True. It's a shame really. After all his military contributions during his lifetime, his life and reputation is suddenly in shambles with his betrayal. It may be hard to do, but do not think too harshly of Tolwyn. His actions to preserve humanity over the WC series are great and he may have been driven somewhat insane because he has no purpose in life besides war. Imagine what would happen if you no longer had a purpose in life. How would you feel?
i don't know. If you read the Wing Commander books, then you realize that sometime between End Run and Heart of the Tiger they ran this study that said the Kilrathi would win. Really stupid, you ask me, because even Kilrathi had figured out that their system of slave labor and selective genocide was a STUPID policy, not even to MENTION their literal cutthroat politics. End Run Tolwyn risks a heavy carrier to save a escort Carrier. Price of Freedom Tolwyn is trapped by his own beliefs and fears.
i think tolwyn was a tragic figure. his many years of service of confederation and defense of humanity made him a great hero, but also led to his downfall. he did indeed died a warrior, even though the last part of his life is marred by his stupidity

@BanjoOz
If I were in Blairs place I would probably chosed the "ethical" side because in all games before Tolwyn was such an idiot towards him. But, if I would be a senator in that room, I would be in very hard dilemma. They are both right.
marcus10 2 years ago
@marcus10 Agreed... I think it's good that they make Tolwyn himself really cause the vote to sway in the "good ending"; as a senator, you might have doubts who was right, until he starts praising the Kilrathi (who we've just been at terrible war with) and "if we perfect our methods of killing"... etc. I really love how he seems to snap at that point, with Paladin stepping forward. Wonderful McDowell performance in a great scene, equal to any "real movie" performance he's given.

@BanjoOz Yes! He has lost his true morality fighting for a false morality.

And killing 90% of the population to "purify the stock" and make those that lived "better" ! I mean, when people found out about that, they would burn him at the bloody stake!
ARP7777777 2 years ago
Tolwyn may be partially right, in that eternal vigilence is necessary, but how he went about it was abhorent. False flag operations to increase his powerbase etc and promote a full scale war...completely inexcusable. And for some weird reason this makes me think of world current events.
tannagra 2 years ago

Just like the pharaohs did.
Workers of the world...you are no longer needed. Made obsolete by your own toil you will now be lead to a slow and agonizing death by poverty.

is that the guy who was Luke in star wars?

to kkolofft:
Yes, Mark Hamill was Luke. Good actor but even better voice actor.

You know, maybe Tolwyn is right.
Steltek, anyone?

How awesome: This is the first time I've ever seen Mark Hamill in something other then Star Wars and voicing the Joker.

The recent remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still' had a similar message... That mankind must be brought to the brink of extinction before a great revolution can occur. The Wing Commander games were SO far ahead of their time!

thanks for uploading this, great movies
the cutscenes, plot, and acting in wc3 and wc4 put the pathetically disappointing movie to shame
clouz22 2 years ago 3
The movie was an embarrassment. I'm ashamed to say I'm a WC fan because someone might think I was referring to the movie and not the game. They changed everything in the movie. I don't know what they were thinking. Chris Roberts must have been smoking crack.
Cloncurrify 2 years ago 3
Actually Chris wasn't smoking crack. He wasn't pleased with how the Kilrathi looked in the movie either.
LightStreak567 2 years ago
I think the problem with that movie went deeper than the appearance of the Kilrathi. In fact, that was the least of the movie's problems. Even if they'd used state of the art CGI to render the Kilrathi, my opinion of the movie would be equally negative.
Personally I think the movie was a disgrace.
Cloncurrify 2 years ago 3
It IS a disgrace
LightStreak567 2 years ago
In-CREDIBLE. Malcolm McDowell? John Rhys Davies? And that's the best performance I've ever seen Mark Hammil do! What an all star cast!
Compared to the relatively unknown actors from the movie...
This was the time when games had CLASS. I want it re-released!

Why the heck did they do the movie WITHOUT THEM? Can't understand: a computer game better than a movie !!!
buscasololoesencial 2 years ago 2
I agree....Why they didn't just use the cast from the games for the movie blows my mind..They went with some of the young-hot names of the time like Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matt Lillard. Sad, really.

@xxMachineGunKellyxx Yeah, I know EXACTLY what you mean. I mean, where did the Pilgrims come from? And the Nav-Com A. I. stuff?

The guy playing Tolywn is pretty good as well. They need to make a remake of this game with better graphics...
LordFizban 2 years ago
With better graphics?>?WTF?
SidNightWalker 2 years ago
I think he meant the in-flight graphics. I do agree, the game could use a facelift in that regard ... but the cinematics of WC4 are probably the best I've seen out of the Wing Commander series.
ThInTrM 2 years ago
Oh yeah haha..Would have to stay live action for the cutscenes though, kinda like the C&C games have been cool enough to do(Generals doesn't count).

Mark Hamill is actually pretty good here, I think he's a better actor than people think when they judge him based on Star Wars: A New Hope. He's pretty good here.

he's good everywhere - especially on Batman

He wasnt in Batman?

Mark Hamil did some voice overs in Batman - he didn't star in the movie..

I was surprised. I didn't think he was ever such a good actor. Be he did very well here.
And, of course, in Batman.

How much more prepared for the Nephilum had Admiral Tolwyn continued on with his goals?

I only had the opportunity to play WC1 and WC4. Even for a victorious Blair ending, there are two variations to it which gives 2 different epilogue scenes of the victorious kind. I used to have the options written on paper for these two variations but have lost it since.
supermouse1969 3 years ago
Oddly enough, my roommate was shocked when I chose the options, I saw the ALTERNATE ENDING when I first finished WCIV. I saw Blair become admiral. I can tell you where you make the choices if you want.
Tigerman1138 3 years ago
Thanks Tigerman1138 but I've given away my 6 CD's to someone and moreover I don't have an old computer to run it. I'll just have fond memories of the game which I played for hours trying every possible variation when it came to the choices.
supermouse1969 3 years ago
It's hard to know what Tolwyn could be thinking as he sat in his cell. Perhaps he was inwardly cursing Blair and his allies for dooming humanity to an inevitable defeat in a future war or maybe he was reflecting on what went wrong throughout his life that brought him to this disgrace. He may have committed suicide when he realized the enormity of his crimes and couldn't handle the guilt or he could have wanted to deny his enemies the satisfaction of his execution with one last act of defiance.
rcldragon 3 years ago 2
Mentioning the bio-weapons is more effective in this interaction than unmarked fighters. I went with unmarked fighter option and lost the Assembly vote, then Blair got arrested as a traitor
wrestler211 3 years ago
Tolwyn is a tragic figure, he becomes so consumed by his need to 'prepare humanity' for the next great enemy, that he is willing to sacrifice the very things that make us all Human in the first place. I never really liked him, too much of a hard-liner, but he wasn't bad. Just strict. However in WC4, he just goes off the deep end, consumed by his own over-the-top need to keep Humanity ready.
MarcusTrinnias 3 years ago 4
How would you feel?
rcldragon 3 years ago
i don't know.
ARP7777777 2 years ago 2
Well, DUH..Tolwyn was a part of that.
SidNightWalker 2 years ago
i think tolwyn was a tragic figure. his many years of service of confederation and defense of humanity made him a great hero, but also led to his downfall. he did indeed died a warrior, even though the last part of his life is marred by his stupidity
stringerboi 3 years ago
I'd really like to see one with all the correct answers. I mean, I wanna see Tolwyn get his balls busted about the Bioweapons he used.
