The best part of the SuperFriends was the "guest appearances" by other super heroes.. For a short time, it felt like he cartoons would actually be as cool as the much more adult oriented stories in the comic books. It never turned out that way, but it was still cool.
Today, we have movie quality big money graphic novel adaptations, but back then this was the best we had, and we were happy with it.
Agreed. Two richboy vigilantes (Batman?Green Arrow). They also could' ve played the Green Lantern/Green Arrow relationship. Instead of Samari/Apache Chief they should've had GREEN ARROW & RED TORNADO!
I wish these old original Super Friends episodes were on DVD...If any one has them I wish they would post them...I loved the one with the couple who had the machine that dug under the earth to that fantastic world of walking trees and rocks and stuff hee hee :P!
When your life is on the line and you're about to be eaten by ants, manners can be the last thing on one's mind. If it was me, I'd just want to get the heck out of there as soon as possible.
I wish someone would post a complete episode of this season on youtube. When I was a kid I used to jump out of bed on saturday morning to catch this on abc.
Yes the very first season of Super Friends has not been released yet. There is one new one coming out jan 27 but its teh all new superfriends hour part 2 or the series
I loved these early Super Friends hour-long episodes when I was a kid. Much better than the later series, imo. Ted Knight was always so funny and awesome as the voice of the Narrator. "Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice..." :) And all the characters were so politically correct...no fighting allowed! :D Oh...and Wendy was really cute.
Wendy Marvin and Wonderdog rocked. Zan and Jana and that stupid monmkey always made me wanna barf. Plus wendy was very well drawn, mmmmmmmmmmm Wendy :-)
Is it me or was Green Arrow the only individual that wasn't annoying in that clip. I mean Marvin and Wendy are always annoying, but those two scientists were all whine whine whine...
I think the orginal Superfriends 1973 with Wendy and Marvin is the only series that is not yet on DVD or at least I've haven't seen it but I do have the other shows on DVD.
Actually, upon further inspection, that is NOT Green Arrow. It is actually Robin dressed up for a night of "roleplaying" at Wayne Manor. He is dressed as Robin Head, and what you don't see is Batman as Friar F...um, I think I've given too much information at this point :-)
I agree the animation is better, but man the storyline suxed the big one! It was painful to get through. And I hate those kids. It reminds me of comedy shows that write in new babies or kids, just get a boost in their sagging ratings.
What gets me is it can fly from Africa to Metropolis, Rhode Island. Back in the Silver Age he had arrows for any occasion. Boxing gloves, blowtorches, even a small air tank for breathing underwater. No lie.
But then DC and Didiohave this agenda against the Giffen JLI and have been systematically picking off them one by one. Blue Beetle, Martian Manhunter, L-Ron, Max Lord, Rocket Red, Booster Gold, Ralph and Sue Dibney. The list goes on. And with deaths they cant possibly return from.
So it makes since they slake their unholy thirst for blood with OTHER classic characters.
Didn't Booster Gold come back, actually? I can't keep track.
I can understand some people having a soft spot for the JLI, aka Team Bwa-ha-ha. But Wendy and Marvin? That to me is more like if Scrappy-Doo was introduced in DC Canon to be killed off. Here, we can partially blame the majority of Superfriends fans who went on about how much they hated them. (Not that I'm defending that era, which was the most Scooby-like, but still, I wouldn't mind seeing it again and would buy the DVD)
P.S. I wasn't aware of any political reasons or grudges to explain the deaths of the characters you named. Did DiDio and Giffen have a feud or whatever? Did the former ever say he hated his characters?
I dont know. I thought the current Booster Gold was actually Boosters ancestor.
All I remember was Supernova holding Booster's skeleton and them confirming it was Booster's DNA. So he doesnt have a body to come back to. I kinda quite reading the series after that out of disgust.
I actually thought W&M could have been used nowadays in similar roles, but with better writing. The W&M we see getting killed wasnt really like the Superfriends ones at all.
Like I said I can't keep track and don't really read current comics religiously (my brother does, though). You have a point, but my point is, I bet W&M and their death were just Easter egg inclusions that were supposed to amuse the fanboys who disliked these episodes. I'm not sure.
Then again, the Wonder Twins DID survive Extreme Justice. But this was before the Internet really took off and the W&M/Z&J haters became more vocal (most "popular" cartoon opinions started online, IMO)
Ill be the first to admit the old shows were full of plot holes and silliness that makes me wince, but I never hated it. It was another era. I did like the final Super Powers seasons when the art and writing improved dramatically.
However I *DID* prefer the cartoon origins that Marvin was the son of the original Diana Prince and Wendy was the daughter of Batman's brother Thomas Wayne Jr.. The Comic Twins were pretty blase'. But I thought their deaths were pretty cheap and gratuitous.
And I'm probably one of the biggest Superfriends fans around. I don't care how silly people say they were...though I do agree that they are, like you said, it was a different time. I hate the idea that becoming older must mean you have to turn against everything you found entertaining as a kid, just so you'll seem "cool".
Though, as a kid, I felt disappointed when I saw a W&M episode in syndication and I actually liked the Wonder Twins more. The '70s Superfriends comics fleshed the storylines and characters out better (is that not where W&M's origins were first explained?)
Why the Hell is Green Arrow talking about Robin Hood? That does not make sense. This is so corny, that I almost thought someone else make this video to make fun of Green Arrow. But then I realize, that this video is real and one of those silly throw backs like Adam West BatMan.
You are aware that Robin Hood is an archer like Green Arrow, right? Aslo Consider GA's outfit is directly lifted from Errol Flynn's Robin Hood, Id say that an archer mentioning the most prolific archer in history isn't that big of a stretch.
No shock Sherlock. I don't beleive I said he WAS real. I said he was an archer. I figured anyone would have been able to assume. Particularly after I mentioned ERROL FLYNN's Robin Hood, which would imply Hood was a fictional character played by a real life actor.
I just assumed everyone was bright enough to know without me having to outright say it.
No. By "Errol Flynn's Robin Hood" I clearly meant that Robin Hood was a character played by the actor Errol Flynn.
By the way, it's spelled Dumbass. Which your apparent ignorance give you no grounds for condemning someone else's intellect. Whcih you were incorrect in doing.
You aren't very good at reading comprehension and context, are you?
I was adressing the poster. "Sherlock" was used in a sarcastic context meaning the person I was replying to wasn't as good at coming to an informed conclusion as he seemed to think he was.
I dont see how you think you have any logical foundation to your arguments. I stated in a concise logical manner that Green Arrow's appearance was based on Errol Flynn's portrayal of Robin Hood. Its a pretty clear statement. I can't see how any of you possibly arrive at these inane, unfounded conclusions.
my friend, I agree with your statements pertaining to the Errol Flynn/Robin Hood Connection. I was just being a wiseguy making reference to that inane comment "You ARE aware Robin Hood isn't real and is only fiction, right?" Did you notice the last line in my other post - "It's a joke" ?
Actually, this is a Hanna-Barbera from 1973 or so, not a Filmation product. H-B's animation was somewhat better, but stories and dialog sucked. Filmation's was the exact opposite in most cases.
Thats Norm Alden as the voice of Green Arrow. He was also Aquaman in this, the first season. These episodes were a friggin hour long!!!! They cut them in half for syndication. Norm Alden is best remembered as Frank on Elektra Woman.
The old myth goes: George Washington once threw a silver dollar across the Potomac River at Mt. Vernon (not likely, since the river is roughly a mile wide at that point).
George Washington can do anything he wanted to do including fight off giant ants with a silver dollar or just have it skip on water. Why you got to hate on GW unless your a british commie.
My best friend told me when we first met that Green Arrow did appear on "Superfriends". For years, I didn't believe him. Then I saw this episode on TV, and he was telling the TRUTH! I felt quite better after that.
Hey! That guy is Aquamans voice!! It worx pretty dam good for Green Arrow too, though! Say kid; I'll buy the entire season from you. Can we do it? Please,I'm a major comix fan. Never saw most of the 1st season. And hey, that's not old school: that's basics! We're lookn at the fundamental idea of it all when we look at Superfriends. Everything else is just some version; serving consumer's appetite for popular-flash
i used to hunt giant ants, but then i took an arrow in the knee.

Gotta love those Scooby Doo sound effects when he shoots his arrow... never imagined it sounded like that when reading the comics.

Funny... His Voice Sounds almost the same like JLU

He looks happier than when he is portrayed in the comics and on JLU.
