Of course, you don't really need this anymore, with cable systems that have a built in channel/program guide (which offers advantages such as being able to view what's on a week from now) but I watch it for the nostalgia value. And, I don't care what people say about black backgrounds being, as webpagesthatsucks puts it, er shall I shall (I kinda forget) flamboyant trying to look "cool" arrogant perhaps, I like black backgrounds
Hmm...those "HBO" and such ads were not done in the normal Prevue software, because they use the standard 1.3 Amiga font called "Topaz". If the Prevue software had generated the text, it would be in the same font as the listings. This means that this particular cable company did that type of ads as full graphics instead of letting Prevue handle it. Interesting.
Dec. 21st, 1991: my half-sis turned 21 that night and I recall looking at a total lunar eclipse, so the night sky was exciting too. The graphics, audio quality and lightning isn't good from today's standards. Prevue used to also air local commercials and the first informercials, which kept TV stations going on 24/7 and a waste of time, energy or money (LoL). +
Fun fact: Burton Callicott, featured on The Library Channel (Ch. 9) in this clip (00:04) was my mom's art teacher at White Station High back in the 1960s.
I was thinking about reporting these "off topic, relationship/enjoyment of You Tube" spammers to You Tube. I don't need anyone right now but Prevue Channel.
I remember that it was such a big deal when the Prevue channel was added to Cablevision. That was back during the good old days when the last cable channel was 44 (and that's only if you had a SmartBox).
Yeah, I remember the channel lineup being like this. This was also back in the days when some of the channels on Memphis Cablevision were time-shared (like VH-1 half of the day, and The Weather Channel the other half on channel 30.) I seem to remember A&E and the local educational access channel "The Library Channel" being time-shared to.
As far as I remember, we didn't get Comedy Central (or any of its ancestors, like the Comedy Channel and HA! The Comedy Network) until 1995 when Time Warner Cable took over the Memphis market.
As you all may remember, Time Warner came armed with addressable boxes with interactive guides, universal remotes, and more channels. TW was doing most of what is common to digital cable today with analog cable back then.
@spiniton what does time shared mean? Maybe you mean when it would say channel 15A and 15B, I remember one of our remote controls had an A and B button, but channels weren't split into 2 on our cable system.
ahhh memories i would watch this almost all day when nothin was on and i thought i was the only one in the world its great to find others in here like me to check stuff out like this for entertainment value
Heh, this is what Prevue Guide used to be like when Buckeye Cablesystem first picked it up in '89. The Season's Greetings billboard thing wasn't too different from what my cable company would do by often making promos or ads that would be rendered through that system.
Strange. I thought the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) was replaced by the Prevue Guide in 1992. The old EPG was simular to the one used on the Prevue Guide, only that the entire grid would cover the entire screen and would play live radio audio from a local FM radio station.
You'd make me so happy if you can find the Sneak Prevue clips. I just need to see them. These channels were the only thing I watched as a kid, and this would bring back many memories. Thank you so much!
I have some Sneak Prevue clips from the old Time Warner Home Theater/Time Warner PPV days. I just have to take the time to rummage through some old tapes to see.
FYI, this is the only clip I have right now of the old Prevue Guide that I know of.
I remember this lineup. And don't forget, you have to subtract one channel number for a cable-ready TV. This practice lives on in Memphis, which may be one of the only cable systems left with THREE separate analog channel lineups.
We have two, if you take into consideration that SmartLink has been absorbed into the whole Digital Cable thing (hence the reason all of the old SmartLink boxes are no longer used). And then you have municipalities outside of Memphis that have their own channel lineups, so it may be more than three lineups. Rabbit ears don't count, IMO.
It's only in the last six months that the SmartLink boxes have been discontinued (so there were three lineups until the Comcast takeover). Notice also that the Memphis analog lineup has been extremely resilient with respect to channel numbers--very few changes since 1991.
whit why am my watching this ?

Wow, I forgot about "The Library Channel." Operated by Memphis City Schools, right? I seem to remember it was time-shared with A&E.
I was pretty sure that wasn't TLC as in The Learning Channel, as that was another channel foreign to Memphis Cablevision at the time.
I remembered being jealous of those Germantown cable subscribers that got more channels ;-)

Wow! I feel so special. I was the Programming Director who signed off for Prevue Channel back in the day. I apologize.

If they didn't have a television or movie clip/promo to post, those would take place of the absent clip. Think of it as a filler for a void spot.

Do you have any local commercials from Memphis in the 1990s? Covington Pike Chrysler Plymouth, Watson's, Libertyland, Gatti Keltner?
drucee 5 years ago
I have a few commercials on a videotape from 1988. Not that fascinating...but there is Fleming Fine Furniture commercial in there... LOL

Fleming Fine Furniture... heh Good old local Memphis commercials. They used to advertise on the Prevue Guide a lot as I remember.
