Ovechkin is a piece of pond scum, ok he is forechecking with the advantage to him playing winning the puck as Gonchar moved out of the way to try and get around him. Instead of going for the puck he lifts off his skates and throws his leg at Gonchar. If you have ever seen a game that he is in he never gets penalties and I mean it takes a lot for him to get one, as you can see here, and if you barely even touch him it's a penalty.

It makes no sense for Ovechkin to "get out of the way" when it was his strategy to get him away from the puck. Controversial plays are why ppl love this sport.
Players are taught to play the puck and skate through an opponent. Gonchar could have easily avoided the hit. Ovechkin sucks, but that wasn't an attempt to hurt Gonchar.

Ovechkin is a piece of pond scum, ok he is forechecking with the advantage to him playing winning the puck as Gonchar moved out of the way to try and get around him. Instead of going for the puck he lifts off his skates and throws his leg at Gonchar. If you have ever seen a game that he is in he never gets penalties and I mean it takes a lot for him to get one, as you can see here, and if you barely even touch him it's a penalty.

I'm all for toughness and physicality in hockey cause it wouldnt be the same without it, but what Ovechkin does here is clearly a knee-on-knee hit which can end careers.
also the way he leaves his feet on almost every hit is not right either, if he would stay on his feet when he hits he may even be more affective because he wont be propelled throguh the air like he was on orpik and malkin.

What everyone fails to realize is that Gonchar's not carrying the puck. The idea that Ovechkin is lining him up the entire time is a joke unless he's planning on running interference.
Look at the replay at 1:11 all the way through. Ovechkin's watching the puck the entire time, but the second Gonchar hacks at the puck, THEN Ovechkin decides to take a piece of him.

Gonchar got his body out of the way of the check but not his legs because its impossible to move your legs and body in the same direction at the same time when you are stepping a hit. Ovechkin saw that he couldn't make body to body contact and blatantly stuck out his leg (his leg comes off the ice completely) in an attempt to make contact and get Gonchar off the puck. ILLEGAL

Ok, folks. this is how I saw it: Ovechkin was setting up for a half body impact with his right leg between Gonchar's legs. Gonchar tried to shimmy around Ovechkin's block but was not fast enough which caused the nasty knee to knee collision. Gonchar had his eye on the puck during impact, not on ovechkin. It makes no sense for Ovechkin to "get out of the way" when it was his strategy to get him away from the puck. Controversial plays are why ppl love this sport.

Players are taught to play the puck and skate through an opponent. Gonchar could have easily avoided the hit. Ovechkin sucks, but that wasn't an attempt to hurt Gonchar.

The NHL specifically stated two seasons ago that they were on cracking down on plays that result in injury by giving suspensions for dangerous play. No, he didn't wanna injure the guy. The fact of the matter is he didn't start skating until he saw chance for the hit, and outright chose the hit over playing the puck.

Listen i am a sens fan so i am watching the playoffs in a unbiest way. I believe ovechkin is a good player, but is simply a good player who does not handle losing very well. Take the high hit on orpik in game 3, now this , and dont forget how he shot the puck at Rob Schuderi at the end of the game. He SHOULD sit for a game MINIMUM. The NHL favours him because he is the superstar and it makes me sick. I use to be a fan of him but this year hes done a lot to cross the NHL line u cant cross.

If it were intentional, Ovechkin would have deserved to have been suspended for the rest of the series. Regardless of what he meant to do, he initiated knee on knee contact, resulting in a major injury. He should sit a game without a doubt, seeing as how he wasn't even given a major penalty in the game!

Being a pens fan, as much as i would like to see a suspension, i don't think that it's necessary. If you watch the replay, you can see ovechkin give a small hop the way he does when hes going for his hits, and hes aiming his shoulder at gonchars chest, but gonchar steps to the side to try to avoid the hit and lines up their knees. If you watch, you can also see ovechkin staring down the ice at gonchar with a worried look as hes being escorted down the ice.

WOW....I just paused the video and I see that both players are positioned the same way but are doing to different things. Ovie trying to load up to hit and Gonchar is trying to avoid getting hit. I guess on skates, when you lean to change directions...the knee does stick out and other leg drags behind it.

No suspension, no fine. Clearly Gonchar was trying to avoid the hit that was intended for his upper body. He left his leg out and Ovie still tried to hit him high. Both knees banged together and unfortunately Gonchar got hurt. Ovie served the penalty in game so that should be it. Gonchar doesn't get hurt, this is not even an issue.
